Antimalarial potential of kolaviron,a biflavonoid from Garcinia kola seeds,against Plasmodium berghei infection in Swiss albino mice

Objective:To investigate the antimalarial potential of kolaviron(KV),a biflavonoid fraction from Garcinia kola seeds,against Plasmodium berghei(***)infection in Swiss albino ***:The study consists of seven groups of ten mice *** I,II and III were normal mice that received com ***1 and chloroquine(CQ),*** IV,V,ⅥandⅦwere infected mice that received corn ***,KYI and ***1 and KV2were given at 10-,100-and 200-mg/kg daily,respectively for three consecutive ***:Administration of KV1 and KV2 significantly(P<0.05)suppressed ***-infection in the mice by 85%and 90%.respectively,while CQ produced 87%suppression relative to untreated infected group after the fifth day of ***,KV2 significantly(P<0.05)increased the mean survival time of the infected mice by 175%.The biflavonoid prevented a drastic reduction in HCV from day4 of treatment,indicating its efficacy in ameliorating ***(P<0.05)oxidative stress assessed by the elevation of serum and hepatic malondialdehydewere observed in unlrealed ***-infected ***,senum and hepatic malondialdehyde levels increased by93%and 78%,resjiectively in the unlrealed infecled ***,antioxidant indices,viz;superoxide ***,*** peroxidase and reduced gluathione decreased significantly(P<0.05)in the tissues of untreated ***-infected *** significantly(P<0.05)ameliorated the ***-induced decrease in antioxidant status of the infected ***:This study shows that kolaviron,especially at 200 mg/kg,has high antimalarial activities in ***-infected mice,in addition to its known antioxidant properties.

Effect of pineapple peel extract on total phospholipids and lipid peroxidation in brain tissues of rats

Objective:To investigate the ability of the methanolic extract of pineapple peel to attenuate alcohol-induced changes in total phospholipids and lipid peroxidation in brain tissues. Methods:Oxidative stress was induced by oral administration of ethanol(20%w/v) at a dosage of 5 mL/kg bw in *** 28 days of treatment,the rats were fasted overnight and sacrificed by cervical *** tissues were assayed for total phospholipid(TP) content and malondialdehyde(MDA).Results:Administration of alcohol significantly caused a reduction in TP *** with pineapple peel extract significantly increased the TP content. Significant high levels of MDA was observed in alcohol-fed rats,treatment with pineapple peel extract significantly reduced the MDA ***:Results obtained from this study indicates that pineapple peel extract protects against alcohol-induced changes in total phospholipids and lipid peroxidation in brain tissues.

Modulatory effect of pineapple peel extract on lipid peroxidation,catalase activity and hepatic biomarker levels in blood plasma of alcoholinduced oxidative stressed rats

Objective:To investigate the ability of the methanolic extract of pineapple peel to modulate alcohol-induced lipid peroxidation,changes in catalase activities and hepatic biochemical marker levels in blood ***:Oxidative stress was induced by oral administration of ethanol(20%w/v) at a dosage of 5 niL/kg bw in *** 28 days of treatment,the rats were fasted overnight and sacrificed by cervical *** was collected with a 2 mL syringe by cardiac puncture and was centrifuged at 3000 rpm for 10 *** plasma was analyzed to evaluate malondialdehyde(MDA),catalase activity,aspartate aminotransferase(AST),alkaline phosphatase(ALP) and alanine aminotransferase(ALT) ***:Administration of alcohol caused a drastic increase(87.74%) in MDA level compared with the *** peel extract significantly reduced the MDA level by 60.16%at 2.S mL/kg *** fed alcohol only had the highest catalase activity,treatment with pineapple peel extract at 2.5 mL/kg bw however, reduced the *** AST,ALP and ALT activities were observed in rats fed alcohol only respectively,treatment with pineapple peel extract drastically reduced their activities. Conclusions:The positive modulation of lipid peroxidation,catalase activities as well as hepatic biomarker levels of blood plasma by the methanolic extract of pineapple peels under alcoholinduced oxidative stress is an indication of its protective ability in the management of alcoholinduced toxicity.

Oxidative Stress and Reduced Vitamins C and E Levels Are Associated with Multi-Drug Resistant Tuberculosis

Background: Tuberculosis (TB) still remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. In Nigeria, there is little information on antioxidant status of TB patients. In this study, effects of oxidative stress markers and vitamins C and E were investigated in pulmonary TB patients at-tending a health care facility in Nigeria. Methods: Sputum specimens were processed for acid-fast bacilli (AFB) while rifampicin resistance was determined by GeneXpert/Rif assay. Patients were screened for HIV after adequate counselling. Assays for hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), malondialde- hyde (MDA), protein carbonyl (PC), myeloperoxidase (MPx), xanthine oxidase (XO), catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), reduced glutathione (GSH), glutathione S-transferase (GST), glu-tathione peroxidase (GPx), α-tocopherol and ascorbic acid were estimated using standard me- thods. Results: Of the 83 recruited subjects, 29 (34.9%) were AFB negative, 30 (36.1%) were AFB positive while 24 (29.0%) were positive for rifampicin resistance. Overall, HIV prevalence was 6.0% while higher rate of 16.7% was found among the rifampicin resistant subjects. Plasma concentrations of H2O2, MDA and PC and also MPx and XO activities were significantly higher among rifampicin resistant subjects compared with AFB positive and AFB negative groups (P < 0.05). Plasma concentration of GSH and the activities of SOD, GST and GPX were significantly reduced in rifampicin resistant subjects compared with the 2 other groups (P < 0.05). The plasma activity of CAT was similar between rifampicin resistant and AFB positive subjects but significantly lower when compared with AFB negative group. Rifampicin resistant subjects had significantly lower concentrations of α-tocopherol and ascorbic acid compared with 2 other groups (P < 0.05). Development and Production of Fermented Flour from Sweet Potato （Ipomea Batatas L,） as a Potential Food Securitv Product

The research investigated the possibility of producing acceptable fermented sweet potato （Ipomea batatas L.） flour. Raw sweet potato was size reduced, fermented （submerge） for 72 hours, drained, dried and milled to produce fermented sweet potato flour The proximate composition of the final fermented flour was determined and compared with that of the raw sweet potato. The result revealed that the crude protein （4.27%） and carbohydrate （84.81%） contents of the fermented sweet potato flour were significantly higher （P 〈 0.05） than in the raw sweet potato which were 1.86% and 31.11% respectively. Also, the fat, crude fibre and ash contents of the fermented flour were significantly lower （P 〈 0.05） than in the raw sweet potato which were 0.21%, 0.06% and 1.78% for fermented sweet potato flour as against 0.59%, 0.73% and 2.52% for the raw sweet potato flour. During the fermentation period, the microbial profiles of the fermenting medium increases with increase in time while the pH of the medium decreases with time. Pasting properties of the flour showed that the peak viscosity was attained at 278.67 RVA with pasting temperature of 80.35 ~C, pasting time of 5 minutes, final viscosity of 391.58 RVA and breakdown viscosity of 78.53 RVA. The study revealed the nutritional quality as well as the pasting characteristics of the fermented sweet potato flour that has a great influence and implication on its utilization as a food security crop.
