Efficacy of neoadjuvant chemotherapy for initially resectable colorectal liver metastases:A retrospective cohort study

Can Sense of Coherence Indicate Resilience and Mitigate the Cycle of Violence in Parenting?

Background: Harsh parenting practices during childhood have long-term negative effects on children’s mental health. A focus of nursing care on women’s resilience should be implemented because mothers who have experienced violence tend to be harsh parents. Aim: This study investigated the association between mothers’ violent experiences and harsh parenting (HP) and examined the effects of a sense of coherence (SOC) on this association, assuming that SOC can be an indicator of resilience. Method: In this prospective cohort study of 487 mothers, data were collected on SOC and history of intimate partner violence (IPV) at 1 year after childbirth and HP of their child at 18 months after childbirth. Results: In the 277 responses analyzed by multiple logistic regression analysis, a strong SOC moderating the effect on HP was observed for current IPV and witnessing IPV in childhood, but not for experiencing childhood corporal punishment. Discussion: SOC is a useful indicator of resilience in female victims of violence and is effective in regulating stress spillover. However, its effects are weakened by the learned acquisition aspect of violence. Conclusion: In nursing, providing support to alleviate stress and relearn parenting based on an assessment of the mother’s history of violence and SOC as the resilience indicator is important in curbing HP.

Targeting tight junctions during epithelial to mesenchymal transition in human pancreatic cancer

Pancreatic cancer continues to be a leading cause of cancer-related death worldwide and there is an urgent need to develop novel diagnostic and therapeutic strategies to reduce the mortality of patients with this disease. In pancreatic cancer, some tight junction proteins, including claudins, are abnormally regulated and therefore are promising molecular targets for diagnosis, prognosis and therapy. Claudin-4 and-18 are overexpressed in human pancreatic cancer and its precursor lesions. Claudin-4 is a high affinity receptor of Clostridium perfringens enterotoxin(CPE). The cytotoxic effects of CPE and monoclonal antibodies against claudin-4 are useful as novel therapeutic tools for pancreatic cancer. Claudin-18 could be a putative marker and therapeutic target with prognostic implications for patients with pancreatic cancer. Claudin-1,-7, tricellulin and marvelD3 are involved in epithelial to mesenchymal transition(EMT) of pancreatic cancer cells and thus might be useful as biomarkers during disease. Protein kinase C is closely related to EMT of pancreatic cancer and regulates tight junctions of normal human pancreatic duct epithelial cells and the cancer cells. This review focuses on the regulation of tight junctions via protein kinase C during EMT in human pancreatic cancer for the purpose of developing new diagnostic and therapeutic modalities for pancreatic cancer.

Large Eddy Simulation of Pseudo-Shock Waves Using Wall Model

A supersonic turbulent flowfield involving the pseudo-shock waves in an isolator of a supersonic combustion ramjet is computed using two different LES codes which are a high-order upwind finite volume scheme, and a sixth order compact differencing scheme utilizing the localized artificial diffusivity method for stabilizing shock waves and employing a wall model to enable the use of coarse mesh. In the validation study where a supersonic turbulent boundary layer flow over a flat plate is examined, both LES codes are well validated using velocity profile in the boundary layer given by the hot-wire anemometry and normal stress given by the laser Doppler anemometry. In particular, the sixth order compact differencing scheme gives closer agreements with these experimental data. Then, the validated LES codes are applied to solve the Mach number 2.5 supersonic turbulent flowfield involving the pseudo-shock waves. It is shown that typical features of unsteady flowfield of the pseudo-shock waves are well obtained by both schemes. Again, it is indicated that the sixth order compact differencing scheme gives closer agreements with the existing velocity data obtained by particle image velocimetry and pressure fluctuation data on the wall surface. Besides, the computational cost of the compact differencing scheme is found to be 1/7 of that for the upwind finite volume scheme, even though a wall model is solved at each grid point on the wall surface. Therefore, the obtained results in the present study allow recommending the sixth order compact differencing scheme with a wall model for simulating supersonic turbulent flowfield in an isolator involving the pseudo-shock waves.

Highly Sensitive Filter-Less Fluorescence Detection Method Using an Avalanche Photodiode

Herein we report a highly sensitive filter-less fluorescence detection method using an APD （avalanche photodiode）. Experimental measurements using the proposed APD-based highly sensitive fluorescence detection method exhibits the sensing capability to detect an excitation light and a fluorescence light without band pass filter or grating. The principle of this APD-based highly fluorescence detection method is used the varying multiplication ratio that is decided by wavelength. The wavelength controls running distance of photo-excited carrier by absorption coefficients, and this element decide multiplication ratio on fixed high electrical field. In fluorescence detection, they use two types of light： excitation light and fluorescence light. These lights have different wavelengths and make different multiplication ratio as well. Thus this method can separate two types of light easily by using multiplication ratios of APD without band pass filters/gratings. In this experiment, the excitation light is LED （light emitting diode） and fluorescence light occurs from FITC （fluorescein isothiocyanate） with ethanol. The FITC concentration changes from 0.1 μmol/L to 10 mmol/L. In this measurement circuit, we employ APD （S2385）, power supply voltage, and pico ampere current meter. As a result, these lights are correctly separated by using multiplication ratio with calculation at every concentration FITCs.

Enhancements of Genetic Algorithm for Minimum Cost Design of Steel Frames Considering Fabrication Cost

A discrete optimization problem for minimizing the sum of fabrication cost and steel material cost of sf^el frames under constraints based on Japanese seismic code is set up. Enhancements of the genetic algorithm for the above-mentioned problem are proposed, which are combined with a 1D （one-dimensional） search or a 2D （two-dimensional） search. After the proposed methods are described, they are applied to a five-story frame. A comparison with an exact solution obtained by a revised enumeration algorithm demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed methods.

Japanese Community Pharmacists’ Practice Research Literacy

Objectives: Lack of basic practice research literacy could be considered a barrier to conducting or participating in practice research. Therefore, we examined pharmacy practice research literacy in Japanese community pharmacists. Methods: Community pharmacists (n = 478) who delivered presentations at three major pharmacy-related conferences in 2012 and 2013 completed the survey. We selected 10 key terms related to practice research and asked participants whether they knew the meaning of. Questionnaires were sent to and returned by pharmacists via mail. Results: Of the 478 pharmacists who received questionnaires, 230 (47.9%) completed the survey. The response rates indicating that participants were familiar with the 10 key terms were approximately 50% or lower. The highest response rate was 67.0% for “bias”, and the lowest was 17.0% for “PICO/PECO: Patient-Intervention-Comparison-Outcome/Patient-Exposure-Comparison-Outcome”. Younger pharmacists tended to know several key terms, such as “p values”, “bias”, and “outcome”. Conclusion: Japanese community pharmacists were not knowledgeable with respect to conducting and participating in pharmacy practice research. Practice research knowledge was superior in younger pharmacists. Education in pharmacy schools and continuing professional development programs is important for community pharmacists’ practice research development.
