The screening of the rat brain complementary DNA library revealed a novel,previously unidentified,protein with 78 amino acids,which is now called neurogranin(Ng).1 The human brain also contains Ng,and it is 96%identical with rodent Ng.Besides being a neuronal postsynaptic protein,Ng has been found in lung,bone marrow,and epithelial cells.Ablation of Ng in mice resulted in an impairment of spatial learning and changes in hippocampal short-and long-term plasticity.

Soil health depletion due to intensive tillage operations is a global issue in the agricultural sector.Conservation tillage(CT)which involves non-inversion tillage and leaving~30%of the soil surface covered with crop residues,is a strategy designed to enhance soil health.However,no comprehensive study to investigate the long-term effect of CT on soil biological activity and the soil nutrient supply has yet been widely carried out.Biological and chemical soil properties were assessed at depths 0-5,10-15,and 20-25 cm depths after 18 years of CT and conventional tillage practice(PT).Various stages in the vegetative growth of maize were investigated in 2021 in Hungary.The findings indicated that tillage intensity,soil depth,and growth stages all significantly influenced soil enzyme activities and the concentration of soil nutrients.Less soil disturbance resulted in a significantly larger concentration of soil carbon parameters(total organic carbon and labile carbon)in CT plots,where the activity ofβ-glucosidase and dehydrogenase(DHA)in the upper soil layer increased significantly(0.7-2.6 and 2.6-4.7 times,respectively)compared to PT.The high amount of organic matter and the greater resistance to erosion observed in CT also contributed to the higher concentration of available nutrients(NH_(4),NO_(3),Ca,K)and total P in the surface soil layer.Phosphatase activity was highest in the mid-stage of vegetative growth and was positively correlated to the total P concentration.The alterations in soil water content were clearly negatively corelated with the change in DHA and phosphatase activity.Overall,due to the more balanced environmental conditions,the decomposition of organic substances was more balanced and slower in CT than in PT.This implied that the mobilization of nutrients in the soil was more balanced as well,and that the nutrients were released gradually.The enhancement of the soil nutrient-supplying capacity achieved by means of long-term conservation tillage provides a promising strategy for sustainable nutrient

Exercise is an effective strategy to prevent and improve obesity and related metabolic diseases.Exercise increases the metabolic demand in the body.Although many of the metabolic health benefits of exercise depend on skeletal muscle adaptations,exercise exerts many of its metabolic effects through the liver,adipose tissue,and pancreas.Therefore,exercise is the physiological state in which inter-organ signaling is most important.By contrast,circadian rhythms in mammals are associated with the regulation of several physiological and biological functions,including body temperature,sleep-wake cycle,physical activity,hormone secretion,and metabolism,which are controlled by clock genes.Glucose and lipid tolerance reportedly exhibit diurnal variations,being lower in the evening than in the morning.Therefore,the effects of exercise on substrate metabolism at different times of the day may differ.In this review,the importance of exercise timing considerations will be outlined,incorporating a chrono-exercise perspective.

Point defect quantum bits in semiconductors have the potential to revolutionize sensing at atomic scales.Currently,vacancy-related defects are at the forefront of high spatial resolution and low-dimensional sensing.On the other hand,it is expected that impurity-related defect structures may give rise to new features that could further advance quantum sensing in low dimensions.Here,we study the symmetric carbon tetramer clusters in hexagonal boron nitride and propose them as spin qubits for sensing.We utilize periodic-DFT and quantum chemistry approaches to reliably and accurately predict the electronic,optical,and spin properties of the studied defect.We show that the nitrogen-centered symmetric carbon tetramer gives rise to spin state-dependent optical signals with strain-sensitive intersystem crossing rates.Furthermore,the weak hyperfine coupling of the defect to their spin environments results in a reduced electron spin resonance linewidth that can enhance sensitivity.

AIM:To examine the prevalence and composition of refractive errors in Hungary.METHODS:Nationwide cross-sectional data collected between 2014 and 2019 were analysed from the Comprehensive Health Screening Program of Hungary,which provided spectacle dioptric power and autorefractometry data for 68227 people(35850 women and 32377 men).Their age distribution,18-99y,was similar to the national demographic distributions.RESULTS:Of the total population,16.50%of the refractive errors exhibited hyperopia,40.05%emmetropia,and 43.45%myopia.Myopia was 3 times more frequent(58.7%)in younger ages(18-35y of age)compared to older age groups(19.4%of those 56-70y of age;P<0.001).High myopia showed a low prevalence(0.21%),and an increase parallel with ageing(r=0.716;P=0.009).CONCLUSION:Myopia is the most frequent refractive error in Hungary.The prevalence of myopia is especially increased,up to 2-3 times,in the younger age groups.Nationwide actions need to be taken to reduce the onset of myopia and its associated consequences.

A noteworthy feature of the living world is its bewildering variability. A key issue in several biological disciplines is the achievement of an understanding of the hereditary basis of this variability. Two opposing, but not necessarily irreconcilable conceptions attempt to explain the underlying mechanism. The gene function paradigm postulates that phenotypic variance is generated by the polymorphism in the coding sequences of genes. However, comparisons of a great number of homologous gene and protein sequences have revealed that they predominantly remained functionally conserved even across distantly related phylogenic taxa. Alternatively, the gene regulation paradigm assumes that differences in the cis-regulatory region of genes do account for phenotype variation within species. An extension of this latter concept is that phenotypic variability is generated by the polymorphism in the overall gene expression profiles of gene networks. In other words, the activity of a particular gene is a system property determined both by the cis-regulatory sequences of the given genes and by the other genes of a gene network, whose expressions vary among individuals, too. Novel proponents of gene function paradigm claim that functional genetic variance within the coding sequences of regulatory genes is critical for the generation of morphological polymorphism. Note, however, that these developmental genes play direct regulatory roles in the control of gene expression.

The physiologic and pathologic cellular and molecular changes occurring with age in the human colon affect both the inflammatory process leading to mucosal injury and the regenerative capacity of the epithelium.On the one hand,age-related telomere shortening and inflamm-ageing may lead to the development of colonic inflammation,which results in epithelial damage.On the other hand,the altered migration and function of regenerative stem cells,the age-related methylation of mucosal healing-associated genes,together with the alterations of growth factor signaling with age,may be involved in delayed mucosal regeneration.The connections of these alterations to the process of ageing are not fully known.The understanding and customtailored modification of these mechanisms are of great clinical importance with regard to disease prevention and modern therapeutic strategies.Here,we aim to summarize the age-related microscopic and molecular changes of the human colon,as well as their role in altered mucosal healing.

Objective:Neonates with congenital heart disease(CHD)and perinatal stroke have high mortality and survivors are at risk for poor long-term neurodevelopmental outcome.The aim of this study was to assess the risk factors and outcome of neonates with both CHD and MRI-confirmed perinatal stroke(Study Group)and compare those to the risk factors and outcome of infants matched for CHD without stroke(Control-1)and of infants matched for MRI-confirmed stroke without CHD(Control-2).Methods:We conducted a population-based case-control study enrolling 28 term neonates with CHD and MRI-confirmed acute perinatal stroke born between 2007–2017 in the Central-Hungarian Region.Each of the control groups included 56 infants.The Bayley Scales of Infant Development-II,the Brunet-Lézine test and the Binet Intelligence scales-V were used for neurodevelopmental follow-up at a median age of 61 months.Results:Mortality was highest in the Study Group(25%compared to 5%and 2%,respectively,p=0.001).Adverse neurodevelopmental outcome was prevalent in the Study(53%)and Control-2 Groups(52%,p=0.03).Significantly different parameters among the three groups included Apgar scores,mode of delivery,gestational age at birth,cardiac interventions and twin pregnancy.In a multivariable regression analysis adjusted for clinically relevant parameters,patients in the Study Group had significantly higher odds for mortality compared to patients in the Control-1 Group(OR:6.595%CI:1.1–39.4).Conclusions:Neonates with perinatal stroke and CHD are at a higher risk for dying compared to neonates with CHD without stroke.In addition,the stroke-associated direct insult to the brain likely plays an important role in the development of neurodevelopmental morbidity in these patients.

Intraoperative complication rates in cataract surgery performed by resident trainees and staff surgeons in a tertiary eyecare center in Hungary

AIM: To compare the incidence of intraoperative complications during primary phacoemulsification(phaco) surgery between resident surgeons(residents) and staff surgeons(specialists) and to objectively determine the difficulty of stages in phaco surgery. METHODS: This retrospective study included cases of phaco cataract surgery performed between January and December 2019. There were no exclusion criteria. For each patient, demographics, clinical history, case complexity, type of surgeon, and operative details were reviewed. Primary outcomes included intraoperative complication rates and the objective measure of difficulty in the steps of the surgery performed by residents and specialists.RESULTS: A total of 3272 cases were included;7.4%(n=241) of cases were performed by residents. The overall complication rate was 5.4%(n=177). The intraoperative complication rate was significantly higher(P<0.001) in residents(n=33, 13.7%) than in specialists(n=144, 4.8%). The most frequent complications were posterior capsule tear(n=85, 2.6%), anterior capsule tear(n=50, 1.53%), zonular fiber loss(n=45, 1.38%), and dropped nucleus(n=15, 0.46%). Objectively, the most difficult steps during surgery were phaco in 66(60.0%), capsulorhexis in 21(19.1%), irrigation/aspiration in 13(11.8%), hydrodissection in 9(8.2%), and intraocular lens(IOL) implantation in 1(0.9%) case. CONCLUSION: Intraoperative complication rates are higher in residents than in specialists. The order of objective difficulty in phaco surgery steps is in line with the subjective findings of other surveys, revealing that the most challenging parts of phaco surgery are phaco and capsulorhexis.
