Enigmatic Glass-Like Carbon from the Alpine Foreland, Southeast Germany: A Natural Carbonization Process

Unusual carbonaceous matter, termed here chiemite, composed of more than 90% C from the Alpine Foreland at Lake Chiemsee in Bavaria, southeastern Germany has been investigated using optical and atomic force microscopy, X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, high-resolution Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and differential thermal analysis, as well as by δ13 C and 14 C radiocarbon isotopic data analysis. In the pumice-like fragments, poorly ordered carbon matter co-exists with high-ordering monocrystalline α-carbyne, and contains submicrometersized inclusions of complex composition. Diamond and carbyne add to the peculiar mix of matter. The required very high temperatures and pressures for carbyne formation point to a shock event probably from the recently proposed Holocene Chiemgau meteorite impact. The carbon material is suggested to have largely formed from heavily shocked coal, vegetation like wood, and peat from the impact target area. The carbonization/coalification high PT process may be attributed to a strong shock that instantaneously caused the complete evaporation and loss of volatile matter and water, which nevertheless preserved the original cellular structure seen fossilized in many fragments. Relatively fresh wood encapsulated in the purported strongly shocked matter point to quenched carbon melt components possibly important for the discussion of survival of organic matter in meteorite impacts, implying an astrobiological relationship.

Effect of overburden pressure on determination of reservoir rock types using RQI/FZI,FZI^* and Winland methods in carbonate rocks

Rock typing is an important tool in evaluation and performance prediction of *** techniques such as flow zone indicator(FZI),FZI~*and Winland methods are used to categorize reservoir rocks into distinct rock ***,these methods are applied to petrophysical data that are measured at a pressure other than reservoir *** the pressure changes the pore structure of rock,the effect of overburden pressure on rock typing should be *** this study,porosity and permeability of 113 core samples were measured at five different *** investigate the effect of pressure on determination of rock types,FZI,FZI~*and Winland methods were *** indicated that although most of the samples remain in the same rock type when pressure changes,some of them show different *** are related to the mineralogy and changes in pore system of the samples due to pressure ***,the number of rock types increases with increasing ***,the effect of overburden pressure on determination of rock types is more clearly observed in the Winland and FZI~****,results revealed that a more precise reservoir dynamic simulation can be obtained by considering the reservoir rock typing process at reservoir conditions.

Pore-scale study of the effects of DTPA chelating agent flooding on oil recovery utilizing a clay-coated micromodel

The use of diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid(DTPA)chelating agent has shown promising results for enhanced oil recovery(EOR)in prior *** mechanisms,mainly resulting from rock-fluid interaction,have been proposed for chelating agent flooding;however,little attention has been paid to fluid-fluid interaction thus *** assessment of these mechanisms has primarily relied on macroscopic techniques such as core *** paper aims to investigate the injection of DTPA brine and its dominant mechanisms at the pore scale using a clay-coated *** micromodel tests were performed under oil-wet and water-wet *** a more precise examination of fluid/fluid interactions,the dynamic interfacial tension(IFT)and Zeta potential were *** was observed that the injection of DTPA brine in water-wet state changed the saturation distribution and increased oil *** on visual inspections,this change in saturation distribution could potentially be linked to the formation of micro-dispersions and viscoelastic interfacial ***-dispersions facilitate flow to unswept areas,and viscoelastic interface formation reshapes the interface between oil and brine,causing disconnected oil droplets to coalesce and thus increase *** the oil-wet state,the micro-dispersion formation and wettability alteration can be the dominant mechanisms,and the amount of recovered oil was higher than that observed in the water-wet ***,Zeta potential measurements at the interface between brine and oil showed a more negative value for DTPA brine,which is effective in wettability alteration and micro-dispersions *** results indicate that IFT reduction was not significant enough to be considered the dominant mechanism,although it assists in DTPA brine penetration into the crude oil and subsequent micro-dispersion formation.

Enucleation and evisceration: indications, complications and clinicopathological correlations

·AIM: To assess main indications, postoperative complications and clinicopathological correlation of ocular enucleation-evisceration.·METHODS: A total of 107 subjects who underwent enucleation and/or evisceration and received hydroxyapatite implants(Scleral wrap or mesh) were assessed. For each patient clinicopathological data was collected which included demographic information,clinical history, primary clinical diagnosis, main cause of ophthalmic surgery(traumatic, non-traumatic), type of surgical procedure(enucleation, evisceration) and pathological report. Patients’ postoperative clinical visits were checked for procedure-related complications during first year after surgery.·RESULTS: One hundred and seven patients(male:65.4%; mean age: 26y) underwent enucleation(n=100) or evisceration(n =7) due to traumatic(n =41) and non-traumatic(n =66) causes. Disfiguring painful blind eye was the most common indication of surgery(66.4%),followed by leukocoria(19.6%) and endophthalmitis(4.7%). The main types of injury included firecracker,traffic and work accidents, and sharp object perforating injury. In 53(80.3%) subjects in non-traumatic group the initial clinical diagnosis matched the histopathologicalresults. Malignant tumors(retinoblastoma: 47.5%,malignant melanoma: 27.3%) were the most common pathological diagnoses followed by phthisis bulbi(25.8%).The most common procedure-related complications were major eye discharge(39.6%), and implant exposure and discharge(20.8%).·CONCLUSION: Trauma and malignant tumors are the leading causes of enucleation-evisceration. Despite developing new techniques and materials, enucleation is still associated with considerable postoperative complications.

Effect of Sugar Beet Top Ensiled with Sugar Cane Bagass in Diet of Lactating Buffaloes

Sugar beet tops including leaves and crown harvested and chopped into 3-6 cm, mixed with sugar cane pulp and sugar cane molasses （about 5% of the total mass） to provide a mixture contained 30-35 percent dry mater. After two months of ensiling, the silage was evaluated and used in the ration of lactating buffaloes. A Latin square experiment in a changeover design, with three periods of time, each with 20 days for adaptation and 10 days for recording data, was conducted in which 15 multiparous lactating buffloes were used in three similar groups, each with five animals. The prepared silage was included in the diet of lactating buffaloes where a control diet （A） was compared with treatment diets contained 25% （B） and 50% （C） silage （DM basis） respectively. Milk yield was recorded, sampled and analysed for fat, protein, solid not-fat and total solids-content. The maximum daily rough milk yield per animal was obtained on diet C while minimum on diet A （P 〈 0.05）. Similar trends were observed for 4% fat corrected milk, and 3.5% fat corrected milk that were significantly different between the treatments （P 〈 0.05）. The percentage of crude fat and daily fat yield per animal were significantly （P 〈 0.05） higher in treatment C comparing to A and B. An increasingly trend of milk and fat yield was observed when the animals received silage contained diets but statistically it was significant only for the diets contained 50% silage. In addition, the fat percentage was significantly （P 〈 0.05） increased when the buffaloes received diet containing 50% silage. The highest （P 〈 0.05） amount of protein and total solid yield obtained, when the animals received high （50%） silage diet.
