Shear strength of extremely altered serpentinites based on degree of saturation(Ankara, Turkey)

The term "mélange" has several definitions due to the origin, tectonic and petrographical features. The geotechnical engineering behaviors of mélanges are either dominated by different kinds of intact rock blocks or matrix material. Landslides were encountered within the serpentinite matrix of Ankara Mélange, which is a typical bimrock mass. The residual sections of the extremely altered serpentinites are sandy soils. Such soils undergo rapid change of saturation, leading to shear strength reduction. Undisturbed and disturbed samples were obtained from the outcrops for shear box tests. Geochemical and petrographical composition of the serpentinites were determined by XRF(X Ray Fluorescence), XRD(X-ray diffraction) and thin section inspections, in order to outline the alteration process. Based on field observations, physically decomposed core stones exist beneath 40-120 cm thick residual green and grey-dark grey residual sandy soil. Physical and mechanical properties of the soils were tested with particular emphasis on residual shear strength parameters. Disturbed samples were remolded by standard compaction. The field work was completed during both rainy and summer seasons. Disturbed samples were prepared using phase diagrams in order to attain varying saturation degree. Two distinct sandy soil groups were determined through classification tests. The volumetric compression and/or expansion of the loose and dense samples were also considered based on the angle of dilatancy. A series of consolidated and drained shear box tests were conducted with ascending degree of saturation. The reduction of effective apparent cohesion, internal friction angle and dilatancy angle were determined to obtain a threshold of the degree of saturation. All the sand samples had zero residual internal friction angle and/or apparent cohesion after reaching 70% degree of saturation.

Discontinuities have significant role on the behavior of rock masses with respect to several types of instabilities. Excavability, deformability, bearing capacity and slope stability of the rock masses should be investigated considering the discontinuity characteristics with particular emphasis on the geomechanical properties. Kinematic analyses mostly provide an insight to the instabilities, however the dimensions of the blocks bounded by discontinuities, their geomechanical properties and the geometry of the slope should also to be taken into account. The study area is in the abandoned stone quarry in Bayrakl? district of ?zmir residential area. Due to the excavations and discontinuity orientations, instabilities have occured. Miocene aged andesites and altered agglomerates of Yamanlar Volcanics form the bimrock mass. The study area is located within a sheared zone, bounded by strike slip fault zone. Intact andesite blocks were encountered in altered agglomerate matrix, forming a volcanic bimrock. Wedge and planar sliding and block toppling were observed within the area. Detailed discontinuity surveying was conducted, combined with core drillings. Several typical locations were detected where prismatic blocks of andesites are bound to experience block toppling. Such locations are nearby the top of the steep slopes. Agglomerates are subjected to mainly sliding and the blocks have been formed not by gravity but by peculiarities of thevolcanic sedimentation and, probably by subsequent tectonics. In order to determine the mechanism of the sliding and toppling in more details, the relation of the blocks and the slope geometry were investigated. Bimrock type volcanic rock masses sometimes do not tend to accommodate the general rules of toppling and sliding due to their anisotropic settings.

Optimization of hydrolysis conditions for the production of protein hydrolysates from fish wastes using response surface methodology

The recycling of waste from food processing is an important industrial procedure for obtaining protein sources with high added *** this study,trout(Onchorynchus mykiss),anchovy(Engraulis encrasicolus),and whiting(Merlangius merlangus)wastes were *** hydrolyzation procedure was investigated under the optimum predicted conditions defined by time,temperature,and enzyme ratio(E/S)using alkaline protease(pH 8),Protamex(pH 7),and Flavourzyme(pH 7).The hydrolysis conditions that showed the best degree of hydrolysis(DH%)were optimized using response surface methodology(RSM)with the central composite design(CCD)and Box-Behnken design(BBD)*** effects of three independent variables,temperature(40-60℃),time(1-8 h),and enzyme concentrations(1-2%),were examined for model *** was determined that the DH%varies between 50.92%and 74.30% according to the type of fish waste and *** highest degree of hydrolysis was observed from trout waste(74.30%)and the lowest degree from whiting waste(50.92%)with *** this study,it has been shown that different degrees of hydrolysis and protein recovery can be obtained,depending on fish species,waste composition,enzyme type,and hydrolysis method.

There is an ongoing discussion on how to diagnose a hyperechogenic pancreas and what is the clinical significance of diffusely hyperechogenic pancreas. Computerized tomography and magnetic resonance imaging are the more appropriate methods to diagnose pancreatic hyperechogenicity when compared with transcutaneous or endoscopic ultrasound examination. More importantly, pancreatic hyperechogenicity may not be a certain indicator of pancreatic fat infiltration. Even if it is true, we do not know the clinical significances of pancreatic fat accumulation. Some suggested that excess fat in the pancreas is associated with chronic pancreatitis. However, several histological studies on human alcoholic chronic pancreatitis did not prove the presence of fatty pancreas in such cases. Thus, except for aging, it is very rare to have truly steatotic pancreas in the absence of certain human diseases.

BACKGROUND:Mirizzi syndrome is a rare complication of cholelithiasis,characterized by the narrowing of the common hepatic duct as a result of mechanical compression and/or inflammation due to biliary calculus impacted in the infundibula of the gallbladder or in the cystic *** this study,we aimed to describe the clinical presentations,investigations,operative details,and complications of seven patients who underwent endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography and were finally diagnosed with Mirizzi syndrome in our center. METHOD:We performed a retrospective analysis of the records of 7 patients with Mirizzi syndrome who underwent endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography. RESULTS:The incidence of Mirizzi syndrome was 1.07% of 656 patients given endoscopic retrograde cholangiopan- *** was able to diagnose one *** retrograde cholangiopancreatography suggested the diagnosis in five cases and helped further in the management of these *** patients had cholecystectomy and T-tube placement,and two had cholecystectomy and *** patient with typeⅠMirizzi syndrome according to the Csendes classification successfully underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy. CONCLUSIONS:In the study,the incidence of Mirizzi syndrome was 1.07%of patients who underwent endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography. Preoperative diagnosis of Mirizzi syndrome by endoscopicretrograde cholangiopancreatography is important to prevent complications.

Background:Intestinal ultrasound(IUS)is a valid cross-sectional imaging technique for the evaluation of Crohn’s disease(CD).With advancements in technology,portable ultrasound systems are becoming widely available,and the inevitable change to their use by non-radiologist clinicians would be a valuable contribution to improving patient *** study aimed to investigate the diagnostic yield of IUS examination performed by a gastroenterologist with a portable system as an adjunct imaging modality in the routine care of CD ***:A total of 117 CD patients were assessed by IUS ***-and post-IUS clinical-management decisions were *** primary outcome was to evaluate the change in the patients’clinical-management decision following the IUS *** diagnostic accuracy was compared against the reference decision reached via a multidisiplinary meeting after the evaluation of all patient-related *** endoscopic disease activity was determined using the simple endoscopic score for Crohn’s disease(SES-CD).Results:The initial clinical-management decision was changed in 47 patients(40.2%)after the IUS examination(P=0.001).The accuracy of patient-management decisions improved from 63.2%to 90.6%in comparison to reference decisions(P<0.001).After IUS examination,a further 13 cases(11.1%)were identified for urgent surgical/interventional *** accuracy of colonoscopic(SES-CD≥3)assessment was shown to be comparable to that of IUS(94%vs 91%).The sensitivity for disease presence was 95%with colonoscopy and 94%with the IUS ***:IUS examination with the use of a portable ultrasonography system significantly improves clinicalmanagement *** further supporting data,this practice would possibly become a requirement for CD management.
