Females choose gentle, but not healthy or macho males in Campbell dwarf hamsters （Phodopus campbelli Thomas 1905）

Androgen-dependent male sexual traits （STs） as well as immunocompetence are theoreticallyassumed to be key indicators of a male＇s quality for the mate-choosing female. We studied matechoice by sexually motivated （Sm） females of Campbell＇s dwarf hamsters. Females chose between2 tethered male siblings that differed in expression of STs. males were unrelated to the female andable to contact and copulate with her. In both males, we measured sex-related morphology ofbody mass, mid-ventral specific skin gland, ano-genital distance, and external testicular *** also estimated levels of blood testosterone and cortisol, specific T- and B-cell immune re-sponses to antigens, as well as aggressive and sexual dominance in sibling males through add-itional encounter experiments with another Sm female （male sibs could freely compete for thefemale）. We found that Sm females chose a partner among 2 male sibs and spent over 80% of theirtime on average with the preferred male compared with the non-preferred one. Her choice was notassociated with the first visit of the chosen male, with a higher expression of sex-related traits,higher levels of blood testosterone, or with aggressive dominance. The choice was not associatedwith the intensity of T-cell immune response to phitohemagglutinin （PHA）. Instead there was a ten-dency for a negative relationship with the expression of STs and B-cell response to the antigenchallenge. The only character that unambiguously influenced female choice was the non-aggressive male to female grooming during sexual contact. There was no difference in breedingsuccess between preferred and non-preferred males paired with virgin females.

Change in carbonate budget and composition during subduction below metal saturation boundary

It is generally accepted that carbonates can be subducted to the mantle depths,where they are reduced with iron metal to produce a *** this work,we found that this is not always the *** mantle carbonates from inclusions in diamonds show a wide range of cation compositions(mg,Fe,Ca,Na,and K).Here we studied the reaction kinetics of these carbonates with iron metal at 6-6.5 GPa and 1000-1500℃.We found that the reduction of carbonate with Fe produces C-bearing species(Fe,Fe-C melt,Fe_(3)C,F e_(7)C_(3),C)and wüistite containing Na_(2)O,CaO,and *** reaction rate constants(k=△x^(2)/2t)are log-linear relative to 1/T and their temperature dependences are determined to be k_(mgcO_(3))(m^(2)/s)=4.37×10^(-3)exp[-251(kJ/mol)/RT]k_(camg(CO_(3))2)(m^(2)/s)=1.48×10^(-3)exp[-264(kJ/mol)/RT]k_(cacO_(3))(m^(2)/s)=3.06×10^(-5)exp[-245(kJ/mol)/RT]and k_(Na_(2)cO_(3))(m^(2)/s)=1.88×10^(-10)exp[-155(kJ/mol)/RT].According to obtained results at least,45-70 vol%of carbonates preserve during subduction down to the 660-km discontinuity if no melting *** slab stagnation and warming,subsequent carbonate melting,and infiltration into the mantle saturated with iron metal are accompanied by a reduction of carbonate melt with *** established sequence of reactivity of carbonates:FeCO_(3)≥mgCO_(3)>Camg(CO_(3))2>CaCO_(3)>>Na_(2)CO_(3),where K_(2)CO_(3)does not react at all with iron metal,implies that during reduction carbonate melt with Fe evolves toward *** above conclusions are consistent with the findings of carbonates in inclusions in diamonds from the lower mantle and high concentrations of alkalis,particularly K,in mantle carbonatite melts entrapped by diamonds from kimberlites and placers worldwide.

Thermal performance of a metal hydride reactor for hydrogen storage with cooling/heating by natural convection

metal hydride(mH)systems can be used for storage in stationary facilities of hydrogen with a high volume density at temperatures and pressures close to ambient ***,the possibility of using passive heating/cooling systems or regenerative heat exchangers has been studied to improve the energy efficiency of mH systems for hydrogen storage without the need for forced circulation of a heating/cooling *** convection of air may be used to passively remove/add heat as required for proper operation of a mH *** these conditions,the mH reactor can operate at a constant ambient air temperature and be driven by a difference in pressure between the source and the consumer of *** operation of mH systems with natural convective heating/cooling has not been systematically investigated as yet,a tubular mH reactor based on this principle is examined in this ***-thirds of the internal volume ofø25.4×1 mm tube is occupied by a composition of LaNi5 and aluminium foam(one linear metre contains 1.1 kg of LaNi5 with a hydrogen capacity of 153 NL H2).Annular fins are used to increase heat transfer to *** and simplified mathematical models of the systems of this class are proposed and *** is shown that acceptable hydrogen charging/discharging rates in such systems are achieved with proper selection of fining *** from a hydrogen source at a pressure of 10 atm and an ambient air temperature of 10 to 30℃ takes 15 min.A reactor with a length of 1 m can desorb almost all stored hydrogen at a minimum outlet pressure of 0.45 bar to feed 30-300 W fuel cells.

In this work we carried out an experimental investigation into enhancement of the sorption capacity of carbon fabric using plasma treatment *** fabric is based on viscose fiber and is hydrophobic by *** of the fabric sorption capacity is required for its application in *** this purpose,two plasma treatment methods were considered,*** nonequilibrium radiofrequency(RF)discharge and a vacuum RF plasma source with an external magnetic *** treated by atmospheric discharge demonstrated aging effects during the first week after *** sorption capacity of samples treated by the RF plasma source was stable over the same period and reached values as high as *** of the beam created by the vacuum RF plasma source were analyzed and dependences of the fabric sorption capacity and specific surface area on plasma treatment time were *** found that sorption capacity reached its maximum value after 30 min of treatment and did not change significantly if processing was continued,while the specific surface area reached its maximum after 3 min of treatment and quickly decreased after *** was found that the micropore structure of the fabric remained almost the same during plasma *** volume of mesopores in a unit of the fabric mass(specific volume)doubled during the first 5 min of treatment and returned to initial values after 30 min of *** sorption capacity continued to increase even when the specific surface area decreased after reaching its peak *** indicates the important role of surface functional groups formed on carbon fibers during plasma *** is consistent with the results of x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis showing changes in surface oxidation during plasma treatment.

Altitude-dependent distribution of 137Cs in the environment:a case study of Aragats massif, Armenia

This paper considers the distribution of technogenic 137Cs and naturally occurring radionuclides:238 U,232 Th and40 R concentrations in soils and 137Cs in atmospheric dry depositions by altitudinal belts of the Aragats mountain massif,Republic of *** soil samples were collected at altitudes from 1000 to 3200 *** the determination of geochemical variability,two soil sampling campaigns were *** dry depositions were sampled from five stations at1100-3200 m collected onto organic fiber filters between June and December 2016.137Cs activity was measured using a high-purity Germanium detector coupled to a multichannel analyzer(Canberra).Results indicated that specific activity of 137Cs in soils at 1000 m is495-528 Bq m^-2,andat3200 mis10,500-11,470 Bq m^-*** correlation observed for 137Cs versus naturally occurring radionuclides,which varies in distribution by *** activities of 137Cs in dry atmospheric depositions varies from 1.06 at 846 m to2.37 Bq m^-2 per quarter at 3200 m and increases as the altitude *** of 137Cs in soil and dry atmospheric deposition correlated significantly,and 137Cs activity in soils and atmospheric dry depositions decrease as the absolute altitude *** 50-year effective dose from exposure to 137Cs fallout varies with altitude from 0.007 to 1.42 m Sv.

Nanomaterials on the basis of electroboosted rolling in grooves and calibres

The process of electroboosted rolling in grooves and calibres can be utilised as an effective way of obtaining of new materials with structure and properties, close to nanosizes. The features and technological capabilities of electroboosted rolling in grooves and calibres utilised for obtaining unique constructional(structural) and functional materials and hardware products from them. The cross-sectional(transversal) size of internal layers can be at the expense of repeated reduction of a package (packet) from the ordered threads or layers as metallic, and not of metallic materials.

利用自主研制的气液荷电萃取电离装置实现了溶液中蛋白组分的荷电萃取电离直接质谱分析。系统考察了所用气体种类、气泡路径长度、溶液电压、气压等条件对溶液中溶菌酶等蛋白荷电萃取电离的影响,以期得到最佳蛋白质信号。在以CO;为萃取气体、气泡路径长度32 cm、溶液电压+2 k V、气压0.05 mPa条件下,溶菌酶在水、纯水稀释200倍尿液、未稀释尿液中的浓度分别为1×10;mol/L、1×10;mol/L、1×10;mol/L时获得谱图信噪比（S/N≥3）类似,信号强度不受样品管内径大小影响,所用尿液最小体积为6 m L,但对珍稀样品可进一步减少用量。与ESI-mS相比,本方法获得更多低价态蛋白质离子,对溶液中的小分子基体、无机盐具有更强的耐受性,且辣根过氧化物酶经气液苛电萃取电离能保留53.9%活度。本方法具有无需复杂样品预处理、无化学试剂污染的特点,有望为分析复杂基质中蛋白质提供一种新方法。

Dear Editor,Since its first description in South Africa in November 2021,the SARS-CoV-2 Omicron variant rapidly outcompeted the previously dominating Delta *** is the fifth variant of concern(VOC).It contains an unusually high number of mutations compared to previous VOCs,especially in the viral Spike protein,and shows high transmissibility and efficient escape of neutralizing antibodies.
