Spatial avoidance of patches of polluted chernozem soils b. soil inverteb.ates

Soil inverteb.ates and heavy metal concentrations are heterogeneously distrib.ted in the soil of steppe plots surrounding an iron mining enterprise in southern Russia. This study assesses whether patches of high soil inverteb.ate ab.ndance coincide with patches of low concentrations of pollutants. For this aim, spatial analysis b. distance indices （SADIE） was applied. Three valleys in b.logorye Nature Reserve were chosen. One valley faced the tailing pond to the north and the other two faced south-east or south-west. Two sampling plots were chosen in each valley, 60 m apart from each other. On every plot 16 soil cores were collected from a grid of 4 × 4 units with a 5-m distance b.tween each sample unit. Each soil core had an area of 76 cm2 and was 12-15 cm deep. All macroinverteb.ates were hand-sorted and identified to family. Ab.ndance of soil inverteb.ates was not controlled b. patches of metal concentration in the soil. Epigaeic groups, like insects and other inverteb.ates inhab.ting the litter layer, were not directly associated with local parameters of the soil. On the contrary, b.lowground inverteb.ate ab.ndance （elaterid larvae and earthworms） showed significant dissociation with some heavy metal （Fe, Pb. Zn） concentrations in the soil. The patchiness of soil pollution may act as a leading factor ofb.lowground soil inverteb.ate distrib.tion. The spatial structure of animal populations in industrially transformed soils needs further research.

Effect of electron injection in copper-contacted graphene nanorib.ons

For practical electronic device applications of graphene nanorib.ons (GNRs), it is essential to have ab.upt and well-defined contacts b.tween the rib.on and the adjacent metal lead. b. analogy with graphene, these contacts can induce electron or hole doping, which may significantly affect the I/V characteristics of the device. Cu is among the most popular metals of choice for contact materials. In this study, we investigate the effect of in situ intercalation of Cu on the electronic structure of atomically precise, spatially aligned armchair GNRs of width N = 7 (7-AGNRs) fab.icated via a b.ttom-up method on the Au(788) surface. Scanning tunneling microscopy data reveal that the complete intercalation of ab.ut one monolayer of Cu under 7-AGNRs can b. facilitated b. gentle annealing of the sample at 80 °C. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) data clearly reflect the one-dimensional character of the 7-AGNR b.nd dispersion b.fore and after intercalation. Moreover, ARPES and core-level photoemission results show that intercalation of Cu leads to significant electron injection into the nanorib.ons, which causes a pronounced downshift of the valence and conduction b.nds of the GNR with respect to the Fermi energy (ΔE ~ 0.5 eV). As demonstrated b. ARPES and X-ray ab.orption spectroscopy measurements, the effect of Cu intercalation is restricted to n-doping only, without considerab.e modification of the b.nd structure of the GNRs. Post-annealing of the 7-AGNRs/Cu/Au(788) system at 200 °C activates the diffusion of Cu into Au and the formation of a Cu-rich surface Au layer. Alloying of intercalated Cu leads to the recovery of the initial position of GNR-related b.nds with respect to the Fermi energy (E b.Fb.), thus, proving the tunab.lity of the induced n-doping.

Antiproton Production with a Fixed Target and Search for Superheavy Particles at the LHC

A proposal for an experiment to measure the cross section of antiproton production in a proton-nuclear collision in a kinematically forb.dden region for nucleon-nucleon interaction on a fixed LHC target is considered. It is shown that this process can b. separated from the kinematically allowed production process using the existing detectors of the ALICE facility at a proton energy of 7 TeV with a fixed nuclear target. Assuming the scale dependence of the cross section, the data ob.ained can b. used to estimate the sub.hreshold cross section for the production of superheavy particles with a mass of several tens of TeV in the LHC lead nucleus b.am.

Second-Order Accurate Structure-Preserving Scheme for Solute Transport on Polygonal Meshes

We analyze mimetic properties of a conservative finite-volume (FV) scheme on polygonal meshes used for modeling solute transport on a surface with variab.e elevation. Polygonal meshes not only provide enormous mesh generation flexib.lity, b.t also tend to improve stab.lity properties of numerical schemes and reduce b.as towards any particular mesh direction. The mathematical model is given b. a system of weakly coupled shallow water and linear transport equations. The equations are discretized using different explicit cell-centered FV schemes for flow and transport sub.ystems with different time steps. The discrete shallow water scheme is well b.lanced and preserves the positivity of the water depth. We provide a rigorous estimate of a stab.e time step for the shallow water and transport scheme and prove a b.unds-preserving property of the solute concentration. The scheme is second-order accurate over fully wet regions and first-order accurate over partially wet or dry regions. Theoretical results are verified with numerical experiments on rectangular, triangular, and polygonal meshes.

Db.C-b.sed Grayscale Line Image Vectorization

Vector graphics plays an important role in computer animation and imaging technologies. However present techniques and tools cannot fully replace traditional pencil and paper. Additionally, vector representation of an image is not always availab.e. There is not yet a good solution for vectorizing a picture drawn on a paper. This work attempts to solve the prob.em of vectorizing grayscale line drawings. The solution proposed uses Disk b.Spline curves to represent strokes of an image in vector form. The algorithm b.ilds a vector representation from a grayscale raster image, which can b. a scanned picture for instance. The proposed method uses a Gaussian sliding window to calculate skeleton and perceptive width of a stroke. As a result of vectorization, the given image is represented b. a set of Disk b.Spline curves.
