CuZr-based bulk metallic glass and glass matrix composites fabricated by selective laser melting

monolithic bulk metallic glass and glass matrix composites with a relative density above 98%were produced by processing Cu_(46)Zr_(46)Al_(8)(at.%)via selective laser melting(SLm).Their microstructures and mechanical properties were systematically examined.B2 CuZr nanocrystals(30-100 nm in diameter)are uniformly dispersed in the glassy matrix when SLm is conducted at an intermediate energy *** B2 CuZr nanocrystals nucleate the oxygen-stabilized big cube phase during a remelting *** presence of these nanocrystals increases the structural heterogeneity as indirectly revealed by mircrohardness and nanoindentation *** corresponding maps in combination with calorimetric data indicate that the glassy phase is altered by the processing *** the formation of crystals and a high overall free volume content,all additively manufactured samples fail at lower stress than the as-cast glass and without any plastic *** inherent brittleness is attributed to the presence of relatively large pores and the increased oxygen content after selective laser melting.

BACKGROUND Sclerosing angiomatoid nodular transformation(SANT)is a rare benign disease of the spleen with unknown *** symptoms are inhomogeneous,and suspicious splenic lesion often found incidentally,leading to splenectomy,as malignancy cannot securely be ruled *** is made histologically after *** SUmmARY Two cases of German,white,non-smoking,and non-drinking patients of normal weight are *** first one is a 26-year-old man without medical history who was exhibiting an undesired weight loss of 10 kg and recurring vomiting for about 18 *** second one is a 65-year-old woman with hypertension who had previously undergone gynecological surgery,suffering from a lasting feeling of abdominal *** showed radiologically an inhomogeneous splenic lesion leading to splenectomy approximately 6 and 9 wk after surgical *** diagnoses of SANT were made ***-up went well,and both were treated according to the recommendation for asplenic *** SANT is a rare cause of splenectomy and an incidental histological *** research should focus on clinical and radiological diagnosis of SANT as well as on treatment of patients with asymptomatic and small findings.

Hepatocellular carcinoma recurrence after acute liver allograft rejection treatment: A multicenter European experience

Background:During the last decades,several risk factors for the recurrence of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)after liver transplantation(LT)have been ***,the impact of two important drivers of oncogenesis,namely the immunosuppression and the treatment of acute cellular rejection(ACR)have been marginally *** study aimed at investigating the impact of ACR treatment on the incidence of tumor recurrence in a large European HCC-LT ***:Seven hundred and eighty-one adult patients transplanted between February 1,1985 and June 30,2016 were retrospectively *** propensity score match,116 patients treated for ACR using steroid boluses were compared with 115 patients who did not present any ACR or a histologic but clinical irrelevant ***:Steroid boluses treated patients had a 18-fold higher overall incidence of HCC recurrence than those non-treated patients(16.4%vs.0.9%;Pmultivariate Cox regression analysis,steroid boluses used to treat ACR were an independent risk factor for HCC recurrence(HR=14.2;95%CI:1.8–110.4;P=0.010).Conclusions:The decision to treat ACR as well as to reinforce immunosuppression load should be cautiously taken in view of the presented *** studies are needed to further elucidate the clinical impact of immunosuppression on HCC recurrence after transplantation.

Role of laser scan strategies in defect control,microstructural evolution and mechanical properties of steel matrix composites prepared by laser additive manufacturing

Steel matrix composites(SmCs)reinforced with WC particles were fabricated via selective laser melting(SLm)by employing various laser scan strategies.A detailed relationship between the SLm strategies,defect formation,microstructural evolution,and mechanical properties of SmCs was *** laser scan strategies can be manipulated to deliberately alter the thermal history of SmC during SLm ***,the involved thermal cycling,which encompassed multiple layers,strongly affected the processing quality of *** scan sequence combined with interlayer offset and orthogonal stagger mode can effectively eliminate the metallurgical defects and retained austenite within the produced ***,due to large thermal stress,microcracks that were perpendicular to the building direction formed within the *** employing the checkerboard filling(CBF)hatching mode,the thermal stress arising during SLm can be significantly reduced,thus preventing the evolution of interlayer *** compressive properties of fabricated SmCs can be tailored at a high compressive strength(~3031.5 mPa)and fracture strain(~24.8%)by adopting the CBF hatching mode combined with the optimized scan sequence and stagger *** study demonstrates great feasibility in tuning the mechanical properties of SLm-fabricated SmCs without varying the set energy input,e.g.,laser power and scanning speed.

The biocompatible Ti40Cu34Pd14Zr10Sn2bulk metallic glass was rapidly heated,also known as flash-annealed,at varying heating rates up to 1579 K/***,the phase formation was characterized via advanced in-situ highenergy X-ray *** has been found that the evolving kinetic constraints can be used as a tool to deliberately alter the crystalline phase *** novel processing route permits to select phases to crystallize to a predefined fraction and,thus,to potentially design the microstructure of materials according to a specified ***,flash-annealing poses a unique synthesis route to design materials with,for instance,good biomechanical compatibility.

Anastomotic techniques for rat lung transplantation

The first lung transplantation in the rat was achieved by Asimacopoulos et al using sutured anastomoses in *** development of a cuffed technique to construct the anastomoses by mizuta and colleagues in 1989 represented a breakthrough that resulted in simplification of the procedure and shorter warm is-chemic *** then,a number of further variations on the technique of rat lung transplantation have been *** spite of this,the procedure remains technically demanding and involves a long learning *** minireview describes the following new technical safeguards to further evolve the technique for cuffed anastomoses in rat lung transplantation:the use of anatomical landmarks to avoid twisting of the everted donor pulmonary vein and bronchus in the cuff,the use of the cuff tie as a landmark to avoid twisting of the anastomotic cuffs relative to the recipient vessels,distal ties on the recipient vessels to achieve a bloodless field and triangulation of the venotomy to avoid pulmonary vein tearing.

Aim:To determine the effect of saposin C (a known trophic domain of prosaposin) on proliferation,migration and invasion,as well as its effect on the expression of urokinase plasmonogen activator (uPA),its receptor (uPAR) and matrix metalloproteinases (mmP)-2 and -9 in normal and malignant prostate *** addition,we tested whether saposin C can activate p42/44 and stress-activated protein kinase/c-Jun NH_2-terminal kinase (SAPK/JNK) signal transduction pathways of the mitogen-activated protein kinase (mAPK) ***:We employed West- ern blot analysis,phospho-specific antibodies,cell proliferation assay,reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction, in vitro kinase assays and migration and invasion to determine the effect of saposin C on various biological behaviors of prostate stromal and cancer ***:Saposin C,in a cell type-specific manner,upregulates uPA/uPAR and immediate early gene c-Jun expression,stimulates cell proliferation,migration and invasion and activates p42/44 and SAPK/JNK mAPK pathways in prostate stromal and cancer *** prostate epithelial cells were not responsive to saposin C treatment in the above ***:Saposin C functions as a multipotential modulator of diverse biological activities in prostate cancer and stromal *** results strongly suggest that saposin C functions as a potent growth factor for prostatic cells and may contribute to prostate carcinogenesis and/or the development of hormone-refractory prostate cancer.

Exceptional points(EPs) are degeneracies of non-Hermitian operators where, in addition to the eigenvalues, the corresponding eigenmodes become degenerate. Classical and quantum photonic systems with EPs have attracted tremendous attention due to their unusual properties, topological features, and an enhanced sensitivity that depends on the order of the EP, i.e., the number of degenerate eigenmodes. Yet, experimentally engineering higher-order EPs in classical or quantum domains remain an open challenge due to the stringent symmetry constraints that are required for the coalescence of multiple eigenmodes. Here, we analytically show that the number-resolved dynamics of a single, lossy waveguide beam splitter, excited by N indistinguishable photons and post-selected to the N-photon subspace, will exhibit an EP of order N+1. By using the well-established mapping between a beam splitter Hamiltonian and the perfect state transfer model in the photon-number space,we analytically obtain the time evolution of a general N-photon state and numerically simulate the system’s evolution in the post-selected manifold. Our results pave the way toward realizing robust, arbitrary-order EPs on demand in a single device.
