Background： Depression is often comorbid with chronic somatic diseases. Few previous studies have investigated the prevalence of somatic diseases in depression or the prescription pattern of antidepressants in comorbidly depressed patients in Asia. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of somatic comorbidity （SC） in depression and compared the prescriptions of antidepressants in depressed patients with and without SC. Methods： A total of 2320 patients treated with antidepressants in 8 Asian countries were examined, and a diagnosis was based on the International Classification of Disease, 10^th revision. We listed 17 common chronic somatic diseases. Patients＇ socio-demographic and clinical characteristics and psychotropic drug prescriptions were recorded using a standardized protocol and data collection procedure. Results： Of the patients examined, 1240 were diagnosed with depression and 30% of them （n = 375） had SC. The most common comorbid condition was diabetes （23.7%）. The patients with SC were more likely to seek help at a general hospital （74.7% vs. 47.2%）, and had a higher incidence of symptoms involving sadness, disturbed sleep, and poor appetite. Noradrenergic and specific serotonergic antidepressant was prescribed more for patients with SC than for those without SC （30.4% vs, 22.9%）. Conclusions： SC is common in depressed Asian patients. It is important to strengthen the recognition of depression, especially in general hospitals and when patients report some somatic discomfort. It is also a matter of urgency to establish evidence-based guidelines for the use of new antidepressants in depressed patients with SC.

Therapeutic and prevention strategies against human enterovirus 71 infection

Human enterovirus 71(HEV71) is the cause of hand,foot and mouth disease and associated neurological complications in children under five years of *** has been an increase in HEV71 epidemic activity throughout the Asia-Pacific region in the past decade,and it is predicted to replace poliovirus as the extant neurotropic enterovirus of highest global public health significance. To date there is no effective antiviral treatment and no vaccine is available to prevent HEV71 infection. The increase in prevalence, virulence and geographic spread of HEV71 infection over the past decade provides increasing incentive for the development of new therapeutic and prevention strategies against this emerging viral infection. The current review focuses on the potential, advantages and disadvantages of these strategies. Since the explosion of outbreaks leading to large epidemics in China, research in natural therapeutic products has identified several groups of compounds with anti-HEV71 activities. Concurrently, the search for effective synthetic antivirals has produced promising results. Other therapeutic strategies including immunotherapy and the use of oligonucleotides have also been explored. A sound prevention strategy is crucial in order to control the spread of HEV71. To this end the ultimate goal is the rapid development, regulatory approval and widespread implementation of a safe and effective vaccine. The various forms of HEV71 vaccine designs are highlighted in this review. Given the rapid progress of research in this area, eradication of the virus is likely to be achieved.

Tribological properties of short carbon fibers reinforced epoxy composites

Short carbon fiber(SCF)reinforced epoxy composites with different SCF contents were developed to investigate their tribological *** friction coefficient and wear of the epoxy composites slid in a circular path against a steel pin inclined at 45°to a vertical axis and a steel ball significantly decreased with increased SCF content due to the solid lubricating effect of SCFs along with the improved mechanical strength of the *** scanning electron microscope(SEM)observation showed that the epoxy composites had less sensitive to surface fatigue caused by the repeated sliding of the counterparts than the *** tribological results clearly showed that the incorporation of SCFs was an effective way to improve the tribological properties of the epoxy composites.

Need for surveillance of concomitant peripheral artery disease in patients with coronary disease: results of the AGATHA survey in Malaysia

Background For patients with cardiovascular disease (CVD), co-existence of peripheral artery disease (PAD) predicts increased mortality, and such patients are also more likely to benefit from aggressive therapy. Surveillance of PAD is often neglected at health clinics. Our aim is to highlight the importance and ease of surveillance of PAD in patients with CVD. Objective To determine the prevalence of symptomatic and asymptomatic PAD in a Malaysian patient population with documented CVD. Methods and Results A total of 393 subjects with established CVD were recruited from three centres (85 women and 308 men), as part of a larger international (AGATHA) survey. PAD, determined by presence of claudicant symptoms on interview and/or abnormal ankle-brachial index (ABI) score of less than 0.9, was present in 21.4% of patients-of whom 64% were asymptomatic. Abnormal ABI is associated with higher systolic blood pressure and number of arterial beds affected. Conclusions Concomitant PAD is prevalent among CVD patients in Malaysia. ABI screening is simple and yields a high proportion of patients with extensive atherosclerosis who may require more aggressive atherosclerotic risk management.(J Geriatr Cardiol 2007;4:195-199.)

Ribonucleic acid (RNA) interference (RNAi) therapies are promising cancer treatment modalities that can specifically target abnormal proto-oncogenes, thus improving the therapeutic effect. For the treatment of pancreatic cancer, targeting one mutant proto-oncogene by RNAi usually does not yield the desired therapeutic efficiency. Both K-ras gene mutations and Notch1 overexpression are common symptoms in pancreatic cancer patients, and play a crucial role in pancreatic cancer cell drug resistance. In this study, biodegradable charged polyester-based vectors (BCPVs) were synthesized for the co-delivery of K-ras and Notch1 small interfering ribonucleic acid (siRNA) into MiaPaCa-2 cells (pancreatic cancer cell line) to overcome drug resistance to gemcitabine (GEM), a first-line chemotherapeutic drug used in the clinic. BCPVs could effectively absorb negative siRNA to form a capsule-like structure, prevent siRNA from nuclease digestion in the serum, and promote effective siRNA cell internalization and endosomal escape. Through K-ras and Notch1 gene silencing in MiaPaCa-2 cells, BCPV-siRNAK-ras-siRNANotch1 nanocomplexes effectively reversed the epithelia-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in MiaPaCa-2 cells, thereby greatly enhancing the sensitivity of MiaPaCa-2 cells to GEM. MiaPaCa-2 cell proliferation, migration, and invasion were effectively inhibited, and cell apoptosis was also significantly enhanced by the synergistic antitumor effect of BCPV-siRNAK-ras-siRNANotch1 nanocomplexes and GEM. These results suggest that this combination RNAi therapy can be used to improve cancer cell sensitivity to chemotherapeutic drugs. Specifically, this newly developed strategy has a great potential for treating pancreatic cancer.

Efficiency enhancement of fluorescent blue organic light-emitting diodes using doped hole transport and emissive layers

The electroluminescent characteristics of blue organic light-emitting diodes （BOLEDs） fabricated with doped charge carrier transport layers are analyzed. The fluorescent blue dopant BCzVBi is doped in an emissive layer, hole transport layer （HTL） and electron transport layer （ETL）, respectively, to optimize the probability of ex- citon generation in the BOLEDs. The luminance and luminous efficiency of BOLEDs made with BCzVBi-doped HTL and ETL increase by 22% and 17% from 11,683 cd/m2 at 8.5 V and 6.08 cd/A at 4.0 V to 14,264 cd/m2 at 8.5 V and 7.13 cd/A at 4.0 V while CIE coordinates of （0.15, 0.15） of both types of BOLEDs remained unchanged. The electron mobility of BCzVBi is estimated to be 1.02 × 10-5 cm2/Vs by TOF.
