Periodical shedding of cloud cavitation from a single hydrofoil in high-speed cryogenic channel flow

In order to explain criteria for periodical shedding of the cloud cavitation, flow patterns of cavitation around apiano-convex hydrofoil were observed using a cryogenic cavitation tunnel of a blowdown type. Two hydrofoils ofsimilarity of 20 and 60 mm in chord length with two test sections of 20 and 60 mm in width were *** fluids were water at ambient temperature, hot water and liquid nitrogen. The parameter range was variedbetween 0.3 and 1.4 for cavitation number, 9 and 17 m/sec for inlet flow velocity, and -8° and 8~ for the flow incidenceangle, respectively. At incidence angle 8°, that is, the convex surface being suction surface, periodicalshedding of the whole cloud cavitation was observed on the convex surface under the specific condition withcavitation number and inlet flow velocity, respectively, 0.5, 9 m/sec for liquid nitrogen at 192℃ and 1.4, 11 m/secfor water at 88℃, whereas under the supercavitation condition, it was not observable. Periodical shedding ofcloud cavitation occurs only in the case that there are both the adverse pressure gradient and the slow flow regionon the hydrofoil.

Novel zinc alloys for biodegradable surgical staples

BACKGROUND The development of biodegradable surgical staples is desirable as non-biodegradable Ti alloy staples reside in the human body long after wound healing, which can cause allergic/foreign-body reactions, adhesion, or other adverse effects. In order to develop a biodegradable alloy suitable for the fabrication of surgical staples, we hypothesized that Zn, a known biodegradable metal, could be alloyed with various elements to improve the mechanical properties while retaining biodegradability and biocompatibility. Considering their biocompatibility, Mg, Ca, Mn, and Cu were selected as candidate alloying elements, alongside Ti, the main material of clinically available surgical *** To investigate the in vitro mechanical properties and degradation behavior and in vivo safety and feasibility of biodegradable Zn alloy *** Tensile and bending tests were conducted to evaluate the mechanical properties of binary Zn alloys with 0.1–6 wt.% Mg, Ca, Mn, Cu, or Ti. Based on the results,three promising Zn alloy compositions were devised for staple applications(wt.%): Zn-1.0Cu-0.2Mn-0.1Ti(Zn alloy 1), Zn-1.0Mn-0.1Ti(Zn alloy 2), and Zn-1.0Cu-0.1Ti(Zn alloy 3). Immersion tests were performed at 37℃ for 4 wk using fed-state simulated intestinal fluid(Fe SSIF) and Hank’s balanced salt solution(HBSS). The corrosion rate was estimated from the weight loss of staples during immersion. Nine rabbits were subjected to gastric resection using each Zn alloy staple, and a clinically available Ti staple was used for another group of nine rabbits. Three in each group were sacrificed at 1, 4, and 12 wk *** Additions of ≤1 wt.% Mn or Cu and 0.1 wt.% Ti improved the yield strength without excessive deterioration of elongation or bendability. Immersion tests revealed no gas evolution or staple fracture in any of the Zn alloy staples. Patterns and Trends in Diagnostic Tests Used for Detection of Colorectal Cancer after Screening with the Immunochemical Fecal Occult Blood Test in Japan

According to the guidelines by the Japanese government, optical colonoscopy is the most strongly recommended diagnostic test after screening with the immunochemical fecal occult blood test (iFOBT), followed by double-contrast barium enema (BE) or sigmoidoscopy. Our study was to assess patterns and trends of colorectal cancer (CRC) diagnostic testing within 2 years after iFOBT. We analyzed both iFOBT results and claims data provided by employee health insurance societies in Japan from 2005 to 2010. 25,596 enrollees underwent iFOBT screening. The positive rate was 5.1%. 32.3% of those positive underwent diagnostic tests and 1.0% (12 patients) were confirmed as having cancer. The most common test was optical colonoscopy (77.2% of total tests), followed by BE (16.2%). From 2006 to 2009, the rate of optical colonoscopy for females increased from 55% to 82% and that of BE declined from 36% to 12%, while no significant changes were seen for males. Only one-third of those who tested positive underwent diagnostic test in the 2 years following screening iFOBT. As official guidelines for diagnostic testing of CRC recommend, optical colonoscopy is now the most commonly used diagnostic test after positive iFOBT result for enrollees in employee health insurance societies in Japan.
