Despite a decline in the overall incidence of gastric cancer(GC),the disease remains the second most common cause of cancer-related death worldwide and is thus a significant global health *** best means of improving the survival of GC patients is to screen for and treat early ***,GC is often diagnosed at an advanced stage and is associated with a poor *** diagnostic and therapeutic strategies have not been successful in decreasing the global burden of the disease;therefore,the identification of reliable biomarkers for an early diagnosis,predictive markers of recurrence and survival and markers of drug sensitivity and/or resistance is urgently *** initiation and progression of GC depends not only on genetic alterations but also epigenetic changes,such as DNA methylation and histone *** DNA methylation is the most well-defined epigenetic change in human cancers and is associated with inappropriate gene ***,an increasing number of genes methylated at the promoter region have been targeted as possible biomarkers for different purposes,including early detection,classification,the assessment of the tumor prognosis,the development of therapeutic strategies and patient *** review article summarizes the current understanding and recent evidence regarding DNA methylation markers in GC with a focus on the clinical potential of these markers.

AIM:To investigate whether gene methylation in the peritoneal fluid (PF) predicts peritoneal recurrence in gastric cancer ***: The gene methylation of CHFR (checkpoint with forkhead and ring finger domains), p16, RUNX3 (runt-related transcription factor 3), E-cadherin, hMLH1 (mutL homolog 1), ABCG2 (ATP-binding cassette, sub-family G, member 2) and BNIP3 (BCL2/adenovirus E1B 19 kDa interacting protein 3) were analyzed in 80 specimens of PF by quantitative methylation-specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Eighty patients were divided into 3 groups; Group A (n=35):the depth of cancer invasion was less than the muscularis propria; Group B (n=31): the depth of cancer invasion was beyond the muscularis propria. Both group A and B were diagnosed as no cancer cells in peritoneal cytology and histology; Group C (n=14): disseminated nodule was histologically diagnosed or cancer cells were cytologically defi ned in the peritoneal ***: The positive rates of methylation in CHFR, E-cadherin and BNIP3 were significantly different among the 3 groups and increased in order of group A, B and C (0%,0% and 21% in CHFR, P<0.05; 20%, 45% and 50% in E-cadherin, P<0.05;26%,35% and 71% in BNIP3, P<0.05). In addition, the multigene methylation rate among CHFR, E-cadherin and BNIP3 was correlated with group A, B and C (9%,19% and 57%, P<0.001). Moreover, the prognosis was analyzed in group B, excluding 3 patients who underwent a non-curative resection. Two of the 5 patients with multigene methylation showed peritoneal recurrence after surgery, while those without or with a single gene methylation did not experience recurrence (P<0.05).CONCLUSION: This study suggested that gene methylation in the PF could detect occult neoplastic cells in the peritoneum and might be a risk factor for peritoneal metastasis.

Determining the tectonic setting of unknown volcanic rocks continues to be one of the key challenges in *** discrimination diagrams have been successfully employed due to their ease of use,recently,validation with big data has raised questions about their *** this study,the discrimination boundaries of Th/Yb versus(vs.)Nb/Yb and TiO2/Yb ***/Yb diagrams,which are the most used types of discrimination diagrams,were redefined based on a large amount of compiled data and support vector machine,a machine learning *** effectiveness of discrimination diagrams was verified,and the limitations and conditions when using them were *** results show that when using the Th/Yb ***/Yb diagram,only basalts with Th/Yb ratios higher than the discrimination boundary can be identified as volcanic arcs in *** contrast,a significant overlap occurs across boundaries in other cases when using these diagrams,particularly for enriched samples with Nb/Yb ratios higher than ***,when using these diagrams to determine the tectonic setting of unknown samples,their limitations must be considered when interpreting their results.

Temporal variation of dynamical modal properties of a base-isolated building is investigated using earthquake records in the building. A batch processing least-squares estimation method is applied to segment-wise time-series data. To construct an input-output system,an auto-regressive model with exogenous input (ARX) of second-order including a forgetting coefficient as a weighting coefficient is used for the estimation of modal parameters. The fundamental and second natural frequencies and the damping ratios of the fundamental and second natural modes of the base-isolated building are identified in the time domain. The identified results are consistent with the results obtained from the micro-tremor vibration data,forced-vibration test data and earthquake records in the present base-isolated building in the case of taking into account the amplitude-dependency of the isolators and viscous dampers. It is finally pointed out that several factors,e.g.,amplitude dependency of the isolator and damper system and special characteristics of the series-type viscous damper system,may be related complicatedly with the temporal variation in modal properties of the above-mentioned system.

For this reason, Japan set out the “Guideline for Safety Assessment of Foods and Food Additives Produced by Recombinant DNA Techniques” and “Guideline for Manufacturing Foods and Food Additives Produced by Recombinant DNA Techniques,” in 1991.

Impairment of innate immune responses in cirrhotic patients and treatment by branched-chain amino acids

It has been reported that host defense responses, such as phagocytic function of neutrophils and natural killer (NK) cell activity of lymphocytes, are impaired in cirrhotic patients. This review will concentrate on the impairment of innate immune responses in decompensated cirrhotic patients and the effect of the treatment by branched-chain amino acids (BCAA) on innate immune responses. We already reported that phagocytic function of neutrophils was significantly improved by 3-mo BCAA supplementation. In addition, the changes of NK activity were also significant at 3 mo of supplementation compared with before supplementation. Also, Fisher’s ratios were reported to be significantly increased at 3 mo of BCAA supplementation compared with those before oral supplementation. Therefore, administration of BCAA could reduce the risk of bacterial and viral infection in patients with decompensated cirrhosis by restoring impaired innate immune responses of the host. In addition, it was also revealed that BCAA oral supplementation could reduce the risk of development of hepatocellular carcinoma in cirrhotic patients. The mechanisms of the effects will also be discussed in this review article.

First principles density functional theory calculations have been performed for the chemisorption of formate adsorption on some metal surfaces. For the most stable adsorption site of short-bridge, the calculated formate adsorption energy follows the order of Au(110) < Ag(110) < Cu(110) < Pd(110) < Pt(110) < Ni(110) < Rh(110) < Fe(100) < Mo(100), and a clear linear correlation exists between the adsorption energy and the corresponding heat of formation of metal oxides. Moreover, it has been found that the formate adsorption energy for the transition metals can be correlated well with its d-band center (εd), and the IB Group metals can be described by the coupling matrix element square (Vad2).
