Epidemiological Profile of Obesity among Adults Aged 21 to 65 Years Living in Yopougon, Cocody and Abobo (District of Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire)

Objective: The study aims to establish the epidemiological profile of obesity in Abidjan. Methods: It was a cross-sectional study carried out in Côte d’Ivoire with 349 volunteers aged 21 to 65 years old and living in 330 households located in Yopougon, Cocody and Abobo, three Municipalities in the city of Abidjan. Results: Out of 349 participants, 90 or 25.8% were declared obese according to BMI. Based on IMG, 62.8% of people had abnormally high body fat. Abdominal obesity was more common in Yopougon and Cocody than in Abobo. Relative to BMI, 36.1% of women were obese compared to 12.9% of men. The same observation was made with regard to the umbilical perimeter. Indeed, abdominal obesity was more observed in women with a rate of 52.6% compared to 11.6% in men. 35.6% of obese people have no level of education. According to the respondents, a very high proportion of weight gain occurred after the age of 10. It was between 10 and 21 years old in Yopougon and Cocody and between 18 and 21 years old in Abobo. More than 70% of obese people living in Yopougon, Cocody and Abobo would not consider obesity as a disease while 40.7% have said they were very little informed about obesity. Conclusion: Two major points have emerged from the examination of the data collected: 1) The prevalence of overweight and obesity remains very high in the three Communes of Abidjan. 2) The occurrence of obesity would be influenced by the sociodemographic characteristics of the populations. Also, updating these sociodemographic characteristics is essential to better adapt national strategies for obesity and overweight combating.

Plant of Bambusa vulgaris is used in traditional medicine practice for the management of many pathologies including hypertension. The effect of the aqueous extract of the leaves of Bambusa vulgaris on blood pressure was evaluated in normotensive male rabbits. Blood pressure was measured by the invasive method. Thus, aqueous extract of Bambusa vulgaris leaves had been injected intravenously at doses ranging from 1 mg/kg to 30 mg/kg in rabbits anesthetized with thiopental. The effects of this extract on blood pressure were also evaluated in rabbits having previously received different doses of atropine. The aqueous extract of Bambusa vulgaris leaves induced a dose-dependent hypotension which is not canceled in the presence of atropine. The results obtained show that the extract has blood pressure lowering effect which may be mediated by muscarinic-type cholinergic receptors.

Mercury Concentration Profile in Sediment Cores of a Tropical Lagoon under High Anthropogenic Activities around an Urban City—Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire

The present study focuses on the quantification of mercury in sediment cores from Cocody, Banco, Koumassi and Milliardaires bays in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. It aims at assessing the state of mercury contamination of the lagoon bottom using DMA-80 (Direct Mercury Analyser). The automatic analyzer DMA-80 mercury is an innovative instrument for the analysis of mercury at very low content in solid and liquid samples in five minutes, without requiring any prior steps of pretreatment wet. The results showed, according to the lithological description of different bays, that the cored sediments consist of mud, sand, sandy mud or muddy sand with occasional shells. In addition, our results showed the presence of mercury in the sediments of the lagoon bottom at a degree of contamination that varies from moderate to very high according to the calculated contamination factor (CF) values. The highest contamination was observed in Cocody Bay at the surface with a contamination factor of 7.5, while the lowest contamination was observed in Milliardaires Bay at the water-sediment interface with a contamination factor of 1.67. In addition, mercury concentrations compared to sediment guide values (SQGs) reveal that these sediments mostly show occasional biological effects but no toxicity except Koumassi core (sediments at 20 cm depth). Also, dredging, hydrodynamics have probably impacted the mercury content. The depositional environment of mercury metal is therefore a limiting factor for its fate in the aquatic environment.

Production of High-Purity Silica Sand from Ivorian Sedimentary Basin by Attrition without Acid Leaching Process for Windows Glass Making

To produce high-purity silica sand usable for glass making, the present study was carried out. The objective of this work was to increase the silicon dioxide (SiO2) content to at least 99% using a simple process without chemical input. The raw sand samples were taken from the Ivorian sedimentary basin, from Maféré and Assinie areas, Côte d’Ivoire. Wet sieving and attrition technique were used for the purification process. The results from the energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS) analyses of the raw and treated samples show a significant increase of silica content and a significant reduction of impurities. The silica content (SiO2) of the sand of Maféré increases from 98.73% ± 0.15% to 99.92% ± 0.05%. And the sand of Assinie increased from 98.82% ± 0.67% in the raw samples to 99.44% ± 0.27% after treatment. The rate of iron oxide and alumina is reduced in these sands. Moreover, the sand of Maféré contains 53.2% of grains of size lower than 500 microns and that of Assinie contains 29.30%. Regarding the chemical composition of these purified sands, they meet the standard BS2975s, the American Ceramic Society and the National Bureau of Standards for window glass making.

Human African trypanosomiasis (HAT), or sleeping sickness, caused by Trypanosoma brucei gambiense, is associated with diverse clinical outcomes. Host’s genetic factors involved in immunity are potential factors that can regulate infection. Genetic polymorphisms within HLA-G could influence the level of HLA-G expression and therefore play a critical role in infection outcomes. The goal of our study was to investigate the association of 14 bp Indel HLA-G polymorphism with the susceptibility/resistance to HAT. DNA samples were collected from 119 cases, 221 controls and 43 seropositive individuals living in Ivorian HAT foci. The 14 bp Indel polymorphism was determined by PCR. Homozygous individuals for 14 bp insertion had a lower risk of progressing to active HAT (p = 0.012, OR = 0.27, 95% CI: 0.09 - 0.8). Moreover, the frequency of 14 bp insertion homozygous genotype was higher in the seropositive group (11%) than in the HAT cases group (3%) (p = 0.043, OR = 0.27, 95% CI: 0.07 - 0.99), which suggested a protective effect of 14 bp insertion homozygous genotype. Genetic polymorphisms in HLA-G may be associated with a variable risk to develop HAT. The 14 bp insertion appears to favour the occurrence of long-lasting T. b. gambiense latent infections.

Background Serological screening tests play a crucial role to diagnose gambiense human African trypanosomiasis (gHAT). Presently, they preselect individuals for microscopic confirmation, but in future "screen and treat" strategies they will identify individuals for treatment. Variability in reported specificities, the development of new rapid diagnostic tests (RDT) and the hypothesis that malaria infection may decrease RDT specificity led us to evaluate the specificity of 5 gHAT screening *** During active screening, venous blood samples from 1095 individuals from Cote d’Ivoire and Guinea were tested consecutively with commercial (CATT, HAT Sero-K-SeT, Abbott Bioline HAT 2.0) and prototype (DCN HAT RDT, HAT Sero-K-SeT 2.0) gHAT screening tests and with a malaria RDT. Individuals with ≥ 1 positive gHAT screening test underwent microscopy and further immunological (trypanolysis withT.b. gambiense LiTat 1.3, 1.5 and 1.6;indirect ELISA/T.b. gambiense;T.b. gambiense inhibition ELISA withT.b. gambiense LiTat 1.3 and 1.5 VSG) and molecular reference laboratory tests (PCR TBRN3, 18S and TgsGP;SHERLOCK 18S Tids, 7SLZoon, and TgsGP;Trypanozoon S2-RT-qPCR 18S2, 177T, GPI-PLC and TgsGP in multiplex;RT-qPCR DT8, DT9 and TgsGP in multiplex). Microscopic trypanosome detection confirmed gHAT, while other individuals were considered gHAT free. Differences in fractions between groups were assessed by Chi square and differences in specificity between 2 tests on the same individuals by *** One gHAT case was diagnosed. Overall test specificities (n = 1094) were: CATT 98.9% (95%CI: 98.1–99.4%);HAT Sero-K-SeT 86.7% (95%CI: 84.5–88.5%);Bioline HAT 2.0 82.1% (95%CI: 79.7–84.2%);DCN HAT RDT 78.2% (95%CI: 75.7–80.6%);and HAT Sero-K-SeT 2.0 78.4% (95%CI: 75.9–80.8%). In malaria positives, gHAT screening tests appeared less specific, but the difference was significant only in Guinea for Abbott Bioline HAT 2.0 (P = 0.03) and HAT Sero-K-Set 2.0 (P = 0.0006).
