A Mathematical Model of Breast Cancer and Mediated Immune System Interactions

Mathematical model that describes breast cancer and immune interactions were presented using system of differential equations to provide analytic and nnmeric framework of cancer-immune dynamics. Four types of immune cells-CTLs （cytotoxic T lymphocytes）, macrophages, NK （natural killer） and helper T cells-known to play the most significant roles in developing breast cancer immunity were modeled using differential equations. The model was then applied to different cancer growth rates and simulated using MATLAB software tool. The parameters of the model were based on experimental and clinical results from published articles. Results supported clinical studies that maximal breast cancer immunity depends mostly on each of the four immune cell types chosen. It was observed that for a given breast cancer growth rate, there was an optimal activation that maximized the response of the immune system. The effectiveness of the immune system resulted in the decrease in breast cancer killing rates. These results highlighted the importance of immune system activations in breast cancer development and treatment. Therefore, the model and its simulation provided a robust framework to better understand breast cancer progression and response to the immune system.

The study sought to investigate the historical background of the traditional hand-made embroidery technique, the production process, and its changing trends amongst the Asantes of Ghana. Interview and observation were used in collecting the needed data at selected craft centres in the Kwabre East District, Ejisu-Juaben municipality, Kumasi sub-metro and metropolitan in the Ashanti region of Ghana. The study employed both descriptive and experimental research methods based on the qualitative research approach. It was revealed that Kente and Adinkra enjoy wide reputation and therefore are considered as prestigious clothes. However, Nwomu cloth does not have this fame, only indigenes understand its usage and the philosophy behind its production. In view of this, it is recommended that the elders who are endowed with this unique craft must open their doors to the youth to learn the craft.

Split Addition of Nitrogen-Rich Substrate at Thermophilic and Mesophilic Stages of Composting: Effect on Green House Gases Emission and Quality of Compost

Composting as a solution to the increasing generation of municipal solid waste (MSW), also contribute to GHGs emission when not controlled and could lack some basic nutrients, especially nitrogen. This study assessed the split-additions of nitrogen-rich substrate to composting materials and their effect on GHGs emissions as well as the quality of the composts. Nitrogen-rich substrates formulated from pig and goat manure were co-composted with MSW for a 12-weeks period by split adding at mesophilic (˚C) and thermophilic (>50˚C) stages in five different treatments. Representative samples from the compost were taken from each treatment for physicochemical, heavy metals and bacteriological analysis. In-situ CH4, CO2, N2O gas emissions were also analyzed weekly during composting. It was observed that all the treatments showed significant organic matter decomposition, reaching thermophilic temperatures in the first week of composting. The absence affects the suitable agronomic properties. All nitrogen-rich substrate applied at thermophilic stage (Treatment two) recorded the highest N, P and K concentrations of 1.34%, 0.97% and 2.45%, respectively with highest nitrogen retention. In terms of GHG emissions, CO2 was highest at the thermophilic stage when N-rich substrate was added in all treatment, while CH4 was highest in the mesophilic stage with N-rich substrate addition. N2O showed no specific trend in the treatments. Split addition of the N-rich substrate for co-composting of MSW produced compost which is stable, has less nutrient loss and low GHG emissions. Split addition of a nitrogen-rich substrate could be an option for increasing the fertilizer value of MSW compost.

This study explores the aesthetic dimensions of Kwame Nkrumah＇s cultural policies in the creation of Ghana＇s Presidential Seats and the State Sword. The study is an Art Historical research situated within the qualitative research paradigm. It had a population of a defmed class of cultural policy makers, art historians, traditional rulers, nationalists, visual artists and Ghanaians resident both in and outside Ghana. The study examined how the creation of Ghana＇s Presidential Seats and the State Sword were influenced by Kwame Nkrumah＇s cultural policies and the cultural significance of the aesthetic interplay of ethnic insignias used in capturing the Ghanaian concept of Political authority. The study revealed that, Nkrumah recognised the cultural art forms and elements of ethnic Ghana as assets for national development. In line with his policy of building the Nation State of Ghana, he used ethnic cultural art forms and elements. At independence, Nkrumah commissioned some visual artist to create some artistic pieces （politico-cultural artefacts） for the Ghanaian political authority with inspiration or based on what pertains in the traditional authority （Chieftaincy） of Ghana. Politico-cultural artefacts as used in this study refer to the artefacts produced based on the cultural concepts of the ethnic states for the use of the political authority of the Republic of Ghana. Among these artistic pieces are the three Presidential Seats, The State Sword, The President＇s Personal Standard Pole and the State Mace.

Retroperitoneal liposarcoma is a rare malignant tumour with an incidence of 2.5 per million people annually. It is the most common type of all the retroperitoneal malignant tumours. Early diagnosis of the tumour is difficult because of absence of specific clinical presentation. Symptoms would only occur if the tumour exhibits pressure on the surrounding organs. It usually occurs between the fourth to sixth decades of life affecting both genders equally. Histological subtypes include: well-differentiated, poorly differentiated, myxoid, round cell and pleomorphic. Radiological imaging useful in diagnosis include: ultrasonography, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. Complete surgical resection of the tumour and the adjacent viscera involved or organs remained the mainstay of treatment. Radiotherapy plays a role in reducing the risk of recurrence but its effect on the overall survival of patients is not known. The case presented is a 48-year-old male patient with retroperitoneal liposarcoma, treated by complete surgical resection of the tumour and right hemicolectomy and currently on follow-up for possible recurrence.
