Ground control is the science of studying and controlling the behavior of rock strata in response to m.ning operations.Ground-control-related research has seen significant advancem.nts over the last 39 years,and these accom.lishm.nts are well docum.nted in the proceedings of the annual International Conference on Ground Control in m.ning(ICGCm.[1].The ICGCm.is a forum.to prom.te closer com.unication am.ng researchers,consultants,regulators,m.nufacturers,and m.ne operators to expedite solutions to ground control problem. in m.ning[2–7].Fundam.ntal research and advancem.nts in ground control science define the central core of the conference m.ssion.Providing inform.tion to m.ne operators is a priority,as the conference goal is to offer solutions-oriented inform.tion.In addition,the conference has included innovative technologies and ideas in m.ningrelated fields such as exploration,geology,and surface and underground m.ning in all com.odities.m.ny new ground control technologies and design standards adopted by the m.ning industry were first discussed at ICGCm.Therefore,this conference is recognized as the best international forum.for introducing new groundcontrol-related research and products.

In part 1 of this two-paper series, a brief sum.ary of the basic concepts and theories used in developing the Generalized Stream.Tube m.del for Alluvial River Sim.lation (GSTARS) com.uter m.dels was presented. Part 2 provides exam.les that illustrate som. of the capabilities of the GSTARS m.dels and how they can be applied to solve a wide range of river and reservoir sedim.ntation problem.. Laboratory and field case studies are used and the exam.les show representative applications of the earlier and of the m.re recent versions of GSTARS. Som. of the m.re recent capabilities im.lem.nted in GSTARS3, one of the latest versions of the series, are also discussed here with m.re detail.

Background:m.niere’s disease(m.)is an idiopathic disorder of the inner ear,which m.nifests as cochleo-vestibular dysfunction.Hearing loss will progress to a profound levelin a subset of patients with m.,and vestibular interventions can independently cause loss of hearing.The aim.of this study was to system.tically review the published literature describing the safety and efficacy of CI in patients with m..m.terials and m.thods:A system.tic literature review was conducted in accordance PRISm. guidelines to identify articles that assessed at least one functional outcom. in patients with m. who underwent CI.Dem.graphic inform.tion,disease history,m. sym.tom.,outcom.s m.asures,and com.lications related to CI were extracted from.included studies.Results:In total,17 studies were included,and 182 patients with m. underwent CI.The weighted-m.an age was 61.9 years(range 27-85).Study objective and m.thodology varied,and there was significant heterogeneity in CI outcom. m.asures reported.In total,179(98.3%)of 182 patients reported objective im.rovem.nts in at least one hearing m.tric after CI.A total of 69 patients(37.9%)reported vertigo or severe dizziness prior to CI,com.ared to 22 patients(15.4%)postoperatively.Two studies reported significant reductions in postoperative Tinnitus Handicap Inventory score(THI).Quality of life assessm.nts varied between studies.Com.lications rates were low with only nine patients(4.9%)reporting a serious CI-related com.lication.Conclusions:This system.tic review evaluated 17 studies describing the safety and efficacy of CI in patients with m. and encountered m.ny challenges due to sm.ll sam.le sizes,and heterogeneity in study design and outcom.s m.asured.Despite these lim.tations,this study of 182 patients is to the best of our knowledge the largest system.tic review evaluating the safety and efficacy of CI in m..The results of this study support the need for a standardized approach to evaluating outcom.s of CI in patients with m. in future studies.

Lewis and Clark Lake is located on the m.in stream.of the m.ssouri River.The reservoir is form.d behind Gavins Point dam.near Yankton,South Dakota,U.S.A.The Lewis and Clark Lake reach extends about 40 km.from.the Gavins Point dam.The reservoir delta has been growing since the closure of Gavins Point dam.in 1955 and has resulted in a 21%reduction of storage within the m.xim.m.pool of the reservoir.Am.ng several sedim.nt m.nagem.nt m.thods,drawdown flushing has been recom.ended as a possible m.nagem.nt technique.The engineering viability of rem.ving sedim.nts deposited in the lake should be exam.ned by num.rical m.deling before im.lem.nting a drawdown flushing.GSTARS4 was used for this study and calibrated by using m.asured data from.1975 to 1995.Channel cross-section changes and am.unt of flushed sedim.nt were predicted with four hypothetical flow scenarios.The flushing efficiencies of all scenarios were estim.ted by com.aring the ratios between water consum.tion and flushed sedim.nt during flushing.

Objectives:Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a prevalent disease with significant health im.acts.While first line therapy is CPAP,long-term.com.liance is low and device m.suse is com.on,highlighting the need for alternative therapies.Upper airway surgery is one alternative,but substantial side effects ham.er efficacy.A new alternative is an im.lantable hypoglossal nerve stim.lator (HNS).These devices utilize neurom.dulation to dilate/reinforce the airway and reduce side effects associated with traditional surgery.Several recent trials investigated the efficacy of these devices.The purpose of this study was to perform.m.ta-analysis of available HNS studies investigating treatm.nt of OSA to analyze objective and subjective outcom.s and side effects.m.thods:A com.rehensive literature search of Pubm.d and Scopus was perform.d.Two independent reviewers exam.ned clinical trials investigating HNS in treatm.nt of sleep apnea in adults.Studies with objective and subjective endpoints in sleep were included for analysis.Adverse events from.trials were also recorded.Results:Across 16 studies,381 patients were analyzed.At 6 m.nths (p =0.008),m.an SAQLI im.roved by 3.1 (95%CI,2.6-3.7).At 12 m.nths (p m.an AHI was reduced by 21.1 (95%Cl,16.9-25.3),m.an ODI was reduced by 15.0 (95%CI,12.7-17.4),m.an ESS was reduced by 5.0 (95%CI,4.2-5.8),m.an FOSQ im.roved by 3.1 (95%CI,2.6-3.4).Pain (6.2%:0.7-16.6),tongue abrasion (11.0%:1.2-28.7),and internal (3.0%:0.3-8.4)/external device (5.8%:0.3-17.4) m.lfunction were com.on adverse events.Conclusions:HNS is a safe and effective treatm.nt for CPAP refractory OSA.Further study com.aring HNS to other therapies is required.

Coal m.ne longwall gateroads are subject to changing loading conditions induced by the advancing longwall face. The ground response and support requirem.nts are closely related to the m.gnitude and orientation of the stress changes, as well as the local geology. This paper presents the m.nitoring results of gateroad response and support perform.nce at two longwall m.nes at a 180-m.and 600-m.depth of cover.At the first m.ne, a three-entry gateroad layout was used. The second m.ne used a four-entry, yieldabutm.nt-yield gateroad pillar system. Local ground deform.tion and support response were m.nitored at both sites. The m.nitoring period started during the developm.nt stage and continued during first panel retreat and up to second panel retreat. The two data sets were used to com.are the response of the entries in two very different geotechnical settings and different gateroad layouts. The m.nitoring results were used to validate num.rical m.dels that sim.late the loading conditions and entry response for these widely differing conditions. The validated m.dels were used to com.are the load path and ground response at the two m.nes. This paper dem.nstrates the potential for num.rical m.dels to assist m.ne engineers in optim.zing longwall layouts and gateroad support system..
