Laser diode stacks:pulsed light power for nuclear fusion

Laser drivers are an enabling factor to inertial confinement fusion, because laser diodes must be used instead of flash lamps. We discuss the limitations of laser diode arrays and show what steps the industry is taking. The pump power requirements of large-scale projects such as LIFE or Hi PER are within reach of semiconductor laser diode *** light output powers per laser bars have been around 300 W per bar, as in the Jenoptik 940 nm bars previously used for pumping the Yb:YAG slabs in the Di POLE project. By redesigning the semiconductor laser structures 500 W per bar is now commercially available for 808, 880 and 940 nm pump wavelengths. The construction of one inertial fusion power plant will require an amount of semiconductor laser chips in excess of the current annual production by two orders of magnitude. This adds to the engineering task of improving the device characteristics a challenge to production *** the industry benefits from the recent boost in solid-state lighting that acts as a technology driver, cooperation between manufacturers will be imperative, and to this end we propose standardization efforts.

Analysis of Cartilage Creep Recovery Using a Highly Dynamic Closed-loop Test System

The aim of this study was to analyze cartilage creep and creep recovery after static and cyclic loading. Up to now technical limitations have hindered the measurement of creep recovery. For this reason, we developed a closed loop micro creep and creep-recovery indentation test system with active force control. Bovine osteochondral explants were tested under static （110 kPa） and cyclic （100 cycles, 350 kPa/35 kPa, 1 Hz） loading conditions and subsequently creep recovery was measured. The cartilage thickness was determined using needle indentation. For static loading, the creep and creep-recovery rates were significantly different during the first 60 seconds （p 〈 0.05）. Cyclic loading was assessed for the medial and lateral patella and resulted in a physiological patellar cartilage strain of 7.7% ± 2.6% and 8.2% ± 2.7%, respectively. We recorded a creep recovery of 97.8% ±2.1% for the medial and 98.3% ± 2.4% for the lateral patella. The advantage of this study over earlier in vitro studies is that we recorded creep-recovery profiles with an actively controlled setup. This allowed us to analyze creep recovery immediately after removing the creep load, in contrast to MRI-based in vivo studies. In future, the presented method will enable us to quantify spatial variations within articular joints.

Unraveling quad fever:Severe hyperthermia after traumatic cervical spinal cord injury

Purpose:There are many infectious and inflammatory causes for elevated core-body temperatures,though they rarely pass 40℃(104℉).The term"quad fever"is used for extreme hyperpyrexia in the setting of acute cervical spinal cord injuries(SCIs).The traditional methods of treating hyperpyrexia are often ineffective and reported morbidity and mortality rates approach 100%.This study aims to identify the incidence of elevated temperatures in SCIs at our institution and assess the effectiveness of using a non-invasive dry water temperature management system as a treatment modality with ***:A retrospective analysis of acute SCI patients requiring surgical intensive care unit admission who experienced fevers≥40℃(104℉)were compared to patients with maximum temperatures<40℃.Patients≥18 years old who sustained an acute traumatic SCI were included in this *** who expired in the emergency department;had a SCI without radiologic abnormality;had neuropraxia;were admitted to any location other than the surgical intensive care unit;or had positive blood cultures were *** 9.4 was used to conduct statistical ***:Over the 9-year study period,35 patients were admitted to the surgical intensive care unit with a verified *** patients experienced maximum temperatures of≥40℃.Six of those patients were treated with the dry water temperature management system with an overall mortality of 57.1%in this *** mortality rate for the 28 patients who experienced a maximum temperature of≤40℃was 21.4%(p=0.16).Conclusion:The diagnosis of quad fever should be considered in patients with cervical SCI in the presence of *** this study,there was no significant difference in mortality between quad fever patients treated with a dry water temperature management system versus SCI patients without quad *** early use of a dry water temperature management system appears to decrease the mortality rate of quad fever.
