We measured electron temperatures through a hollow cathode-type discharge tube using several different floating probe methods. This method detected a shift in the floating potential when an AC voltage was applied to a probe through an intermediary blocking capacitor. The shift in the floating potential is described as a function of the electron temperature and the applied AC voltage. In this study, the effects of the frequency and waveform on the electron temperatures were systematically investigated. The electron temperature measured when using the floating probe method with applied sinusoidal and triangular voltages was lower than that measured with an applied rectangular *** value in the high frequency range was close to that of the tail electron temperature.

Magnesium alloys are light weight and exhibit good recyclability but suffer from low hardness and wear *** this study,the hardness and wear resistance of AZ31 magnesium alloy were improved by depositing diamond-like carbon(DLC)films as hard protective coatings using ion-beam-enhanced deposition with various CH4/H2 ratio,gas flow rates and accelerating *** supporting effect of the magnesium alloy was enhanced by the production of a graded interfacial layer which is composed of film atoms and substrate *** composition and mechanical properties of the DLC coatings were characterized using scanning electron microscopy(SEM),Raman spectroscopy,Rockwell test and *** tribological properties of the coating were also investigated using a frictional surface microscope with an in situ observation system and friction force *** DLC films were characterized by a lower intensity ratio of the D-peak to G-peak(ID/IG),higher hardness,and improved tribological properties when deposited at a lower accelerating voltage(6 kV).At the CH4/H2 ratio of 1:99 and 6 sccm/6 kV,minimum ID/IG values of 0.62,relatively low friction force value of 0.12 N,and a maximum hardness of 4056HV were attained *** addition,the DLC film exhibited improved wear resistance and a shallower wear track at this condition.

An active stereo vision system based on a model of neural pathways of human binocular motor system is proposed. With this model, it is guaranteed that the two cameras of the active stereo vision system can keep their lines of sight fixed on the same target object during smooth pursuit. This feature is very important for active stereo vision systems, since not only 3D reconstruction needs the two cameras have an overlapping field of vision, but also it can facilitate the 3D reconstruction algorithm. To evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method, some software simulations are done to demonstrate the same target tracking characteristic in a virtual environment apt to mistracking easily. Here, mistracking means two eyes track two different objects separately. Then the proposed method is implemented in our active stereo vision system to perform real tracking task in a laboratory scene where several persons walk self-determining. Before the proposed model is implemented in the system, mistracking occurred frequently. After it is enabled, mistracking never occurred. The result shows that the vision system based on neural pathways of human binocular motor system can reliably avoid mistracking.

In an analytical study of microbial broths,the actinomycete strain Kitasatospora sp.P07101 was found to produce three new congeners,which were designated hazimycins B(1),C(2),and D(3),together with the previously reported hazimycin(renamed hazimycin A(4)).The structures of these hazimycins were examined using various spectroscopic methods including nuclear magnetic resonance(NMR),and the results revealed that 1–3 were analogues of hazimycin with the replacement of one of the two isonitrile groups in 4 by an NH-formyl group in 1,the two isonitrile groups and an amide group by two NH-formyl groups and a nitrile group in 2,and the two isonitrile groups and two amide groups by two NH-formyl groups and two nitrile groups in *** hazimycin A exhibited moderate antimicrobial activities against Gram-positive bacteria and Candida *** results indicated that the presence of two isonitrile groups in the hazimycin structure is essential for antimicrobial activity.

In this paper, we consider the following problem about the James constant： When does the equality J（X＊） = J（X） hold for a Banach space X ？ It is known that the James constant of a Banach space does not coincide with that of its dual space in general. In fact, we already have counterexamples of two-dimensional normed spaces that are equipped with either symmetric or absolute norms. However,we show that if the norm on a two-dimensional space X is both symmetric and absolute, then the equality J（X＊） = J（X） holds. This provides a global answer to the problem in the two-dimensional case.

The current study proposes a novel framework for the numerical model for estimating the temporal scour considering unsteady sediment inflow and the sediment sorting process. The framework was applied to local scour upstream of a slit weir. The scour model is based on an ordinary nonlinear differential equation derived from sediment continuity and scour rate equations. A one-dimensional(1-D)Boussinesq-type model coupled with nonequilibrium sediment transport was incorporated in the scour model to consider unsteady sediment inflow. In addition, a mixing layer approach was incorporated to determine temporal variations in particle size in the scour hole. The proposed framework was validated using scour experiments conducted under conditions that include non-uniform sediment, live-bed scour,and unsteady flow rate. The simulation results showed satisfactory agreement with experimental results for the scour upstream of a slit weir. The proposed model appropriately explained the hysteresis process for flow unsteadiness, refilling process for live-bed scour, and armoring process for non-uniform sediments. In addition, the model framework proposed in the current study is applicable to local scour around other hydraulic structures(e.g., bridge piers) upon establishing the scour rate equation. Therefore, the current study provides a novel approach for modeling temporal scour that is required to consider unsteady sediment inflow and sediment sorting.

Factors Predicting Late Rectal Disorders after Radiation Therapy for Prostate Cancer

Background： Although various studies have been conducted on the effects of radiation therapy for prostate cancer, rectal toxicity after radiation therapy for prostate cancer, which is an important late adverse event associated with radiation therapy, has not been sufficiently examined. This study aimed to assess the associations of late rectal disorder （LRD） with dosimetric, anatomic, and clinical factors in patients with prostate cancer who underwent three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy （3D-CRT）. Methods： We retrospectively analyzed 104 patients undergoing 3D-CRT between January 2009 and October 2011. Thirty patients were administered anticoagulation/antiplatelet （AC/AP） agents. The standard dose was 74 Gy. Uni- and multi-va,iate analyses we,e performed to identify factors predictive of LRD after 3D-CRT. Results： The median follow-up period was 66 （range： 14 87） months. LRD occurred in 10.6% （11/104） of patients. The median time fi＇om RT to LRD was 15 months （range： 7MI months）. Sixty-four percent of those with LRD （7/11 patients） had been given AC/AP agents. Fitly-five （6/11 ） patients had severe internal iliac artery calcification. By univariate analysis, significant predictors of LRD were internal iliac artery calcification, administration of AC/AP agents, and age. Being very elderly was the significant predictor identified by multivariate analysis （P = 0.0276）. For patients receiving AC/AP agents and those with severe internal iliac artery calcification, the LRD incidences were 23.3% （7/30 patients） and 23.1% （6/26 patients）, respectively, and being 75 years of age or older was a significant predictor in these subsets. Conclusions： Our results suggest advanced age, administration of AC/AP agents, and severe internal iliac artery calcification to be risk factors tbr LRD in patients undergoing standard RT. Effect of Postoperative Administration of Saireito for Bilateral Chronic Subdural Hematomas

The aim of this retrospective study was to investigate the efficacy of saireito for bilateral chronic subdural hematomas (B-CSDH). Between April 2006 and March 2010, a total of 18 patients undergoing unilateral burr hole drainage for B-CSDH took part in a controlled clinical study. Postoperative status of the nonsurgical side was subsequently evaluated, with (n = 10) and without (n = 8) saireito administration. Two in the saireito-treated group patients and four in the control group patients ultimately required contralateral surgical intervention. The remainder, including eight saireito-treated hematomas, resolved without further surgery, generally within eight weeks of the surgical side procedure. However, two of the four resolving control lesions took longer to regress. The hydragogue and anti-inflammatory/steroid-evoking properties ascribed to saireito may facilitate hematoma resolution. After unilateral surgery for B-CSDH, saireito administration may prevent symptomatic deterioration of a contralateral low-density CSDH, preempting subsequent surgery.
