Effects of the Soil-Derived Microorganism BX-1 on Chicken Newcastle Disease

In recent years, effective microorganisms (EMs) have been administered to humans and domestic animals, and their usefulness has been recognized for promoting health and enhancing immunity. For example, the preventative effects against flu are enhanced by ingestion of Lactobacillus by humans, and symptom relief of atopic dermatitis has been reported, with EMs actually used in commercial products. In addition, EM preparations are being used in livestock to prevent infections (e.g. Salmonella and Escherichia coli infection). In poultry, avian influenza and Newcastle disease are terrible and fatal infectious diseases that cause significant economic damage. Furthermore, countries designated as contaminated with these pathogens can experience major trade problems. Given the above, how to protect livestock from infections safely and at low cost without using disinfectants, antibiotics and vaccines is a major issue. In the present study, we examined whether or not Newcastle disease could be suppressed by feeding chickens BX-1 as an EM feed. A field strain of Newcastle virus was cloned from cloaca swabs of large numbers of dying chickens in a poultry farm in Indonesia by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and hemaggregation assays. Chicken kidney cells and embryonated eggs were highly sensitive to this virus, and high titers of virus were able to be collected. The experimental viral inoculated to chickens showed a high mortality rate, with high pathogenicity in birds. Conventional chickens were also raised on a diet supplemented with BX-1 and directly infected with the Newcastle virus. The mortality was decreased in these infected birds. Even the low dose of BX-1 had an inhibitory effect on the lethality of the infection. These results suggest that BX-1 intake through an EM diet is effective in controlling Newcastle disease.

BACKGROUND Malignant lymphoma is a rare form of gallbladder *** of these malignancies are diffuse large B-cell lymphomas or mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue-type lymphomas;however,Burkitt’s lymphoma of the gallbladder is extremely rare,and only two previous reports are available in the ***,we report a rare case of Burkitt’s lymphoma of the gallbladder mimicking gallbladder *** SUMMARY An 83-year-old man with no abdominal complaints was found to have a gallbladder tumor and periportal lymph node enlargement on computed tomography(CT)performed for hypertension *** laboratory data revealed slightly elevated serum levels of carcinoembryonic antigen and soluble interleukin 2 *** examinations revealed two irregular and contrastenhanced masses extending into the gallbladder lumen,but these did not infiltrate the ***,a periportal lymph node had enlarged to 30 *** on these findings,we diagnosed the patient as having gallbladder adenocarcinoma with lymph node metastasis,which was treated using bile duct resection with gallbladder bed resection and periportal lymph node ***,the patient was finally diagnosed as having Burkitt’s *** the surgical margin was pathologically negative,recurrence was noted at the hepatic radical margin and superior pancreaticoduodenal lymph nodes on positron emission tomography/CT soon after ***,he was referred to a hematologist and started receiving treatment with reduced-dose cyclophosphamide,doxorubicin,vincristine,and *** Burkitt’s lymphoma can occur in the *** can be useful in cases with findings suggestive of gallbladder malignant lymphoma.

Glioblastoma without Remarkable Contrast Enhancement on Magnetic Resonance Imaging

This is the report of a histological and clinical investigation of 4 cases of glioblastoma, a rare tumor, in whom poor contrast enhancement of the tumor was visualized on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Among the 94 patients with first-occurrence glioblastoma treated between January 2000 and August 2011, 4 were enrolled in this retrospective study. There were 2 men and 2 women, ranging in age from 41 to 70 years (mean, 57 years). All the patients underwent tumor resection, postoperative irradiation, and chemotherapy. One died of local tumor recurrence after 36 months;the remaining three remain alive as of 25 to 72 months after the initial treatment. The histopathology was glioblastoma with nuclear pleomorphism and pseudopalisading necrosis in all cases. However, the typical vascular endothelial proliferation was not found in 3 cases. All glioblastomas were immunopositive for p53 and immunonegative for epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and isocitrate dehydrogenase 1 (IDH1). These glioblastomas showing unclear contrast enhancement on MRI had similar clinical and pathological characteristics, but differed in characteristics from glioblastoma patients showing marked contrast enhancement of the tumor on MRI.

Outcome of Vision Impairment and Diabetes Insipidus in Suprasellar Region Germinoma

Aim: Many cases of suprasellar region germinoma occurs in diabetes insipidus (DI), but a patient initially may come to the hospital for the chief complaint of visual impairment. The aim of this study is to determine the etiology of initial symptom presentation and the outcomes of visual impairment and DI in suprasellar region germinoma. Methods: We investigated eleven cases of single lesion suprasellar germinomas that were diagnosed and treated in our hospital. For each, a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed. Results: At the hospital visit, decreased visual acuity was found in 5/11 cases, while DI was found in all cases. The decreased visual acuity was improved in 4/5 cases by treatment, but DI improved in only 2/11 cases. In 10 cases, DI occurred earlier than visual impairment. As the initial symptom, visual impairment occurred earlier than DI in only one case and did not improve by treatment. In this case, a pituitary stalk of the normal thickness could be identified by MRI, and the optic nerve was swollen. In ten cases except this case, no significant enlargement of optic nerve was detected, and a swollen pituitary stalk was confirmed. Conclusions: In suprasellar germinomas, it is rare, but the optic nerve can significantly swell at onset, while the pituitary stalk may be intact. In such cases, visual impairment occurs earlier than DI, and visual impairment may not be improved.

Long-Term Outcomes and Prognosis of Transrectal High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound Therapy for Patients with Localized Prostate Cancer—Therapy after Recurrence and Predictive Factors

Objectives: To evaluate the outcomes and prognosis of high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) therapy for patients with localized prostate cancer, and identify suitable candidates for this therapy by investigating the predictive factors. Methods: The 224 patients (low 54, intermediate 111 and high-risk patients 59) with T1-2 stage were treated using the Sonablate device and followed for over 12 months after treatment. Recurrence was determined based on histological findings, prostate-specific antigen (PSA) failure and local or distant metastasis. The factors which are predicting variables with potential effects were investigated by Kaplan-Meier and multivariate analysis. Results: A total of 255 treatment sessions (193 with one, 31 with two) were performed. No patients died of prostate cancer, but 15 died of other causes and 14 patients were lost during follow-up. The 7-year recurrence-free survival (RFS) rates in all patients were 75%, and 5-year RFS rates were 98%, 84% and 59% in the low, intermediate and high-risk patients respectively. In the 216 patients who underwent histological examination at 6 months or later after HIFU, 25 (12%) were positive. In 77 patients with recurrence after first-HIFU, the second treatments were hormonal therapy and HIFU. Of the 31 patients who underwent a second HIFU, the 5-year RFS rates were 64%, and 5-year RFS rates were 100%, 74% and 33% in the low, intermediate and high-risk patients. The significant predictor for recurrence was risk-group, T-stage (T1 vs T2), Gleason score (≤3 + 4 and ≥4 + 3), pretreatment PSA (Conclusions: Prognosis of HIFU for Patients with localized prostate cancer was good, and the low and intermediate-risk patients with T1-staging are suitable indications for HIFU. Effective predictors for outcomes were risk-group, T-stage, Gleason score, pretreatment PSA and nadir PSA.

Inhibition of austenite grain growth above the eutectoid temperature in steels is of great importance in the steel production processes. The occurrence of abnormal grain growth of austenite during heating process in steels is a serious problem because the mechanical properties of steels are degraded due to duplex distribution or extremely coarse austenite grain structures caused by the abnormal grain growth. In the authors’ recent work, it was found that the grain-coarsening temperature, Tc,（the temperature above which abnormal grain growth occurs） is much lower in a ferrite/pearlite（F/P） banded 0.2 pct carbon steel than in a non-banded steel although annealing at high temperatures is needed to eliminate the F/P banded structure. Instead, in this study we focus on the effects of cold deformation on the abnormal grain growth of austenite. Here it is shown that the abnormal grain growth that occurred in the F/P banded steel at low temperatures compared with non-banded steel can be completely inhibited by applying cold deformation before austenitizing. These should be attributed to the uniform distribution of AlN precipitates caused by the cold deformation. This provides a guideline for the industry to control the abnormal austenite grain growth effectively.

Three-dimensional Deposition of Silicon Structure from Silicate Glass with Dispersed Metallie Muminum by Femtosecond Laser Irradiation

We fabricated a silicon structure in silicate glass prepared with metallic aluminum in the starting material, using femtosecond laser irradiation. Small Si-rich structures such as Si clusters were transformed into larger, but still nano-sized, Si particles by laser irradiation. These structures grew to microsize particles due to the thermite reaction promoted by heat treatment. We determined the effect of focused laser pulses on the Si deposition process using the time-resolved transient lens method. Localized high-temperature, high-pressure, and the generation of shock waves appear to be very important in forming the Si-rich structures that ultimately grow into Si particles.
