Construction Method of 3D Aorta Model

With the help of engineering technologies, there are varieties of medical supports such as surgical simulations, preoperative plans, intraoperative supports, and diagnostic explanations. In order to perform preoperative plans, the simulation model of the target organ is necessary, and is usually generated from some fine images obtained by imaging devices such as CT （computed tomography） or MRI （magnetic resonance imaging）. These devices, however, are very large and it is difficult to use them during the surgery although there is a kind of MRI that can be used during operations. On the other hand, there is a device called Ultrasonography （US Echo）. It is so handy and can be easily used during operations without radiation or magnetic effect. US images, however, are not usually used for the construction of 3D model for preoperative plans since there are so many noises in the image, and the quality of the image is not so good compared to the images obtained by CT or MRI. Therefore, the authors have tried to construct 3D volumetric shape model from just two 2D US （ultrasound） images, which are the horizontal and vertical cross-section images of the target organ. Their concrete target organ and surgery are the aorta and AAE （annuloaortic ectasia）, respectively. With some technologies of image processing, the boundary of the aorta is extracted for both cross-section images, and the thickness of the aorta is estimated. These processes are applied to not only the aorta wall but also the aorta valve. Finally, the aorta shape model can be constructed by inserting the estimated horizontal aorta images into the estimated vertical one. The constructed model has three dimensions so that it can be viewed from any point of view.

Precuneus contributes to attentive control of finger movement

AIM: To examine whether precuneus subserves the attentive control of finger movement or whether it mediates themovement preparation and motor inhibition. METHODS: In the Preparation Stage, subjects were shown with a 5-number string in which each number stood for a key-pressing response, the number strings included a complexpattern (eg, 4-1-4-2-3), or a simple one (eg, 2-2-2-2-2), or a null one (ie, x-x-x-x-x). In the Execution Stage, fivereaction signs were presented one by one and subjects were required to press the corresponding key to each signsequentially (eg, in the 4-1-4-2-3 preparation example, subjects press key 4 to the first sign, press key 1 to thesecond sign, key 4 to the third sign and so on). For the null preparation pattern, five numbers, rather than thereaction signs, were shown at the same pace as in the other two conditions and subjects were to press the corre-sponding keys. RESULTS: Left medial frontal gyrus (BA 6) and precentral gyrus (BA 6) were involved in both ofthe Preparation Stage and the Execution Stage, whereas left precuneus (BA 7) was activated only in the ExecutionStage. CONCLUSION: Precuneus mediates the attentive control of finger movement, but not the movementpreparation or motor inhibition.

Identifying behavioral determinants and stage of readiness for performing knee massage among individuals with knee osteoarthritis:An observational study

Objective Patients who experience knee osteoarthritis or chronic knee pain can alleviate their symptoms by performing self-knee *** the readiness and types of determinants needed to facilitate self-knee massage is needed to design effective,theory-informed *** primary objective of this study was to apply the transtheoretical model of behavior change to identify how factors,which include the type of knee condition and pain level,predict an individual’s readiness to adopt self-knee *** secondary objective employed the capability,opportunity and motivation-behavior(COM-B)model to identify relevant determinants that are predictive of an individual’s readiness to undertake self-knee *** An observational study design was used to recruit individuals with knee osteoarthritis(n=270)and chronic knee pain(n=130).Participants completed an online survey that assessed the transtheoretical model of behavior change stages,COM-B determinants(capability,opportunity and motivation),along with self-administered massage *** analysis of covariance and structural equation modeling were used to test the primary and secondary objective,*** Participants who had knee osteoarthritis scored higher on the action stage compared to those with chronic pain(P=0.003),and those who experienced greater level of pain scored higher in the contemplation(P<0.001)and action phases(P<0.001)of performing knee massage compared to those with milder *** COM-B structural equation model revealed self-administered knee massage to be predicted by capability(β=0.31,P=0.004)and motivation(β=0.29,P<0.001),but not opportunity(β=–0.10,P=0.39).Pain level predicted motivation(β=0.27,P<0.001),but not capability(β=0.09,P=0.07)or opportunity(β=0.01,P=0.83).Tests for mediating effects found that determinants of COM-B(motivation and capability)mediate between pain level and self-administered massage behavior(β=0.10,P=0.002).Conclusion Cl

Hippocampus’s role in forming “task-related” associations: Flashing to the things you are looking for

Eichenbaum and colleagues observed that the same place did or did not activate the "goal-approach" cells in hippocampus depending on whether the place was the way for rats to approach specific goal. Parallel with this, the present neuroimage study revealed that, the same type of items could activate the hippocampus more when it was related to the task at hand than when it not. Participants were scanned by fMRI while they made judgments on the type of relationships contained in the word-pairs (e.g., Does the word pair, "furniture-table", contain a "category-exemplar" relationship?). Event-related analysis revealed that the forming of "task-related" association activated hippocampus more than that of "task-unrelated", even if it was the same type of items, and, this hippocampal difference was not caused by the different judgment requirements, nor by the effects of "yes" response. Consistently, the post-judgment cued-recall test exhibited a better retrieval performance for "task-related" associations than for the same type but "task-unrelated" associations. Results also showed that, the semantic re- latedness between the to-be-associated individual words (e.g., the related word pair "healthy-hospital" versus the unrelated word pair "price-way") was not enough to activate the hippocampus when it was "task-unrelated". Generally, we proposed that, through participating in forming of "task-related" asso- ciations and consolidating of episodic memory, hippocampus enabled the organism to keep the in- formation that owned great survival values in mind for future usage.

Crete with its complex geomorphological history is the island with the highest number of endemism observed in animal and plant taxa throughout the Aegean *** other groups of organisms within Crete are well-studied,the freshwater gastropod fauna still remains poorly *** and Pseudamnicola,are 2 genera of freshwater springsnails,both present on the island,inhabiting springs and other freshwater ***,we conduct a comprehensive study on the distribution of the different genetic lineages of the 2 gastropod genera in order to assess the mode of their differentiation on the island and infer the actual number of species present in the *** these aims,sequence data from the mitochondrial gene were used and analyzed within a phylogenetic *** Bythinella,our results strongly support at least 5 delineated Bythinella *** Crete,which correspond to the already described species from previous studies with the addition of a new *** analyses reveal an old time-frame of differentiation with vicariant phenomena being more likely the main drivers shaping the present-day distribution of the genus’genetic *** Pseudamnicola,our data indicate the presence of at least 2 delineated Pseudamnicola *** a differentiation more consistent to an isolation-by-distance pattern of a relatively recent *** processes followed by isolation of the populations and/or recent speciation,seem to be the underlying process for the current distribution of Pseudamnicola lineages.

This paper reviews works on the dynamic analysis of flexible and rigid pavements under moving vehicles on the basis of continuum-based plane strain models and linear *** purpose of this review is to provide in-formation about the existing works on the subject,critically discuss them and make suggestions for further *** reviewed papers are presented on the basis of the various models for pavement-vehicle systems and the various methods for dynamically analyzing these *** pavements are modeled by a homogeneous or layered half-plane with isotropic or anisotropic and linear elastic,viscoelastic or poroelastic material *** pavements are modeled by a beam or plate on a homogeneous or layered half-plane with material properties like the ones for flexible *** vehicles are modeled as concentrated or distributed over a finite area loads moving with constant or time dependent *** above pavement-vehicle models are dynamically analyzed by analytical,analytical/numerical or purely numerical methods working in the time or frequency *** examples are presented to illustrate the models and methods of analysis,demonstrate their merits and assess the effects of the various parameters on pavement *** paper closes with con-clusions and suggestions for further research in the *** significance of this research effort has to do with the presentation of the existing literature on the subject in a critical and easy to understand way with the aid of representative examples and the identification of new research areas.

Active gastrointestinal bleeding:Use of hemostatic forceps beyond endoscopic submucosal dissection

To the best of our knowledge,this is the f irst report of the application of hemostatic forceps in active gastrointestinal(GI) bleeding that is not related to endoscopic submucosal *** 86-year-old woman with chronic intake of low-dose aspirin had a Dieulafoy's lesion of the third duodenal *** control with epinephrine injection was unsuccessful.A 60-year-old man presented with a bleeding ulcer in the duodenal *** days after combined endotherapy,he had recurrent bleeding from two minimal lesions in the same location.A 66-year-old woman under combined antithrombotic treatment was referred to us for chronic GI bleeding of unexplained *** revealed active diverticular bleeding in the second duodenal portion.A 61-year-old woman underwent endoscopic mucosal resection of superficial gastric adenocarcinoma,which was complicated with immediate *** all cases,the blood was washed out using a water-jet-equipped,single-channel gastroscope with a large working *** bleeding points were pinched and retracted with hemostatic *** electrocoagulation was performed using an electrosurgical current *** was *** complications *** conclusion,hemostatic forceps may be an effective as well as safe alternative approach for active GI bleeding of various origins.
