Left Atrial Mec.anic.l Func.ion and Aortic.Stiffness in Middle-aged Patients with the First Episode of Atrial Fibrillation

Bac.ground： In the early stages of atrial remodeling, aortic.stiffness might be an indic.tion of an atrial myopathy, in partic.lar, atrial fibrosis. This study aimed to investigate the assoc.ation between left atrial （LA） mec.anic.l func.ion, assessed by two-dimensional spec.le trac.ing ec.oc.rdiography, and aortic.stiffness in middle-aged patients with tile first episode of nonvalvular atrial fibrillation （AF）. Methods： This prospec.ive study inc.uded 34 c.nsec.tive patients with the first episode of AF, who were admitted to Kartal Kos.;uyolu Researc. and Training Hospital between May 2013 and Oc.ober 2015, and 31 age- and gender-matc.ed healthy c.ntrols. During the 1^st month （mostly in the first 2 weeks） following their first admission, 34 patients underwent the first pulse wave measurements. Then, 21 patients were rec.lled for their sec.nd pulse wave measurement at 11.8 ± 6.0 months following their initial admission. Ec.oc.rdiographic.and pulse wave findings were c.mpared between these 34 patients and 31 healthy c.ntrols. We also c.mpared the pulse wave and ec.oc.rdiographic.findings between the first and sec.nd measurements in 21 patients. Results： Pulse wave analysis showed no signific.nt differenc.s between tile AF patients and healthy c.ntrols with respec. to PWV （ 10.2 ± 2.5 m/s vs. 9.7 ± 2.1 m/s： P = 0.370）, augmentation pressure （9.6 ± 7.4 mmHg vs. 9. 1± 5.7 mmHg; P = 0.740）, and aortic.pulse pressure （AoPP; 40.4 ± 14.0 mmHg vs. 42. 1 ±7.6 mmHg, P = 0.550）. The first LA positive peak of strain was inversely related to the augmentation pressure （r 0.30; P = 0.02） and aortic.systolic.pressure （r - 0.26, P - 0.04）. c.mparison between the two c.nsec.tive pulse wave measurements in 21 patients showed similar results, exc.pt for AoPP. In 21 patients, the AoPP at the sec.nd measurement （45.1± 14.1 mmHg） showed a signific.nt inc.ease c.mpared with AoPP at the first measurement （39.0 ±10.6 mmHg, P = 0.028）, whic. was also higher than that of healthy c.ntrols （42.1

Dear Editor, y-Aminobutyric.ac.d （GABA） is a non-protein amino ac.d （AA） metabolized via the GABA shunt; a three-enzyme pathway that inc.udes glutamate dec.rboxylase （GAD）, GABA transaminases （GABA-T）, and suc.inic.semialdehyde dehydrogenase （SSADH）（Bown and Shelp, 1997; Bouc.~ and Fromm, 2004）. The majority of work on GABA, to date, has foc.sed on its role as an inhibitory neurotransmitter in mammals. In plants, however, due to its intermediate posi- tion between c.rbon （c. and nitrogen （N）, the metabolism of GABA has been suggested as a modulator of c.N balanc. （Fair et al., 2008）. In addition, the numerous observations of a rapid ac.umulation of GABA in response to （a）biotic.stresses has prompted different hypotheses to be postu- lated on its role inc.uding a regulator of c.tosolic.pH and a herbivore deterrent （Bouc.e and Fromm, 2004; Roberts, 2007）. Additionally, a signaling role has been hypothesized in plants, though evidenc. remains elusive and the debate on the dual func.ion of GABA as a signaling molec.le and as a metabolite in plants remains ongoing. In the present work, we report c.anges in the metabolite and transc.ipt profiles in Arabidopsis seedlings exposed to exogenous GABA. Liquid-grown seedlings were c.ltured under c.and N limitation to reveal a possible role of GABA as either c.or N substrate and to asc.rtain its influenc. on transc.iptional programs.
