Y chromosome microdeletions in azoospermic patients with Klinefelter's syndrome

Aim： To study the occurrence of Y chromosome microdeletions in azoospermic patients with Klinefelter＇s syndrome （KFS）. Methods： Blood and semen samples were collected from azoospermic patients with KFS （n = 14） and a control group of men of proven fertility （n = 13）. Semen analysis was done according to World Health Organization （WHO） guidelines. Blood samples were processed for karyotyping, fluorescent in situ hybridization （FISH） and measurement of plasma follicle stimulating hormone （FSH） by radioimmunoassay. To determine Y chromosome microdeletions, polymerase chain reaction （PCR） of 16 sequence tagged sites （STS） and three genes （DFFRY, XKRY and RBM1 Y） was performed on isolated genomic DNA. Testicular fine needle aspiration cytology （FNAC） was done in selected cases. Results： Y chromosome microdeletions spanning the azoospermia factor （AZF）a and AZFb loci were found in four of the 14 azoospermic patients with KFS. Karyotype and FISH analysis revealed that, of the four cases showing Y chromosome microdeletion, three cases had a 47,XXY/46,XY chromosomal pattern and one case had a 46,XY/47,XXY/48,XXXY/48,XXYY chromosomal pattern. The testicular FNAC of one sample with Y chromosome microdeletion revealed Sertoli cell-only type of morphology. However, no Y chromosome microdeletions were observed in any of the 13 fertile men. All patients with KFS had elevated plasma FSH levels. Conclusion： Patients with KFS may harbor Y chromosome microdeletions and screening for these should be a part of their diagnostic work-up, particularly in those considering assisted reproductive techniques. （Asian JAndrol 2006 Jan; 8： 81-88）

Chronic mycobacterium infections are major causes of disease burden of 20%in a tropical country like India. Heavy metals pose a serious risk to the environment and living biota. Potstudies were carried out to determine the competence of Fe-coated ricehusk in Pb spiked soils vegetated with Ricinus communis. Physicochemicalproperties of Fe- coated rice husk ash (Fe-RHA) were characterizedon dry weight basis. Pot experiments were carried out with seedlings *** for 60 days amended with Fe-RHA (0, 2.5% and 5% w/w)and Pb(NO3) [0, 400 and 800 mg kg?1]. Addition of Fe-coated rice huskash to Pb cntaminated soils improved soil pH and fertility. Treatment with5% Fe-RHA decreased Pb accumulation in roots by 84%. Addition of Fe-RHA significantly (p<0.05) increased plant physiological parameters suchas height, leaf diameter, nodes, and leaf number by 64%, 49%, 62% and66% and chlorophyll contents (12–29%) compared to unamended *** findings conclude that Fe-RHA is a low-cost, environmentally friendlyand efficient adsorbent for stabilization of Pb spiked soils.

The integration of constructed wetlands or natural wetlands and surface water heat pumps(SWHPs) leads towards the development of a novel sustainable technology treating urban stormwater and application of renewable energy technologies. SWHPs are a well-recognised source of renewable energy and provide high efficiencies for heating and cooling by employing the enormous renewable storage capacity of surface water systems such as wetlands. Engineered wetland systems are compact urban wastewater or stormwater treatment systems that encompass a plurality of treatment modules similar to processes occurring in natural wetlands. Wetlands are a preferred stormwater treatment system over conventional systems which are energy intensive and inadvertently contribute to greenhouse gas emissions. The incorporation of SWHPs within constructed wetlands has great potential for addressing global water and energy issues, providing significant and multiple benefits for energy and water usage, protecting and enhancing natural water systems within urban catchments and reducing the demand on potable water supplies by contributing to water recycling. Two experimental rigs simulating real-life scenarios of surface water heat pumps integrated with constructed wetlands were set up, and running in a green house(controlled environment) at The University of Salford Manchester. Temperatures and water quality analyses measured the treatment performance and water quality efficiency for the combined systems. The water quality analyses for treatment processes of the rigs showed no significant differences for the removal of biochemical oxygen demand, chemical oxygen demand, nutrients(phosphates, nitrates and ammonia) for the wetland system linked to water-sourced heating and cooling and the stand-alone constructed wetland.

AIM:To compare the difference of capsulotomy produced by precision pulse capsulotomy(PPC),manual(M-CCC),and femtosecond laser assisted capsulotomy(FLAC)in relation to intraocular lens(IOL)centration,circularity and its effect on visual ***:Prospective,non-randomized comparative study conducted at LV prasad Eye Institute,Hyderabad,*** eyes of 52 patients were grouped into 3(FLAC,PPC and M-CCC)based on capsulotomy techniques *** consecutive eyes with uneventful phacoemulsification and with no comorbidities affecting the capsulotomy or visual outcome were included in each *** main outcome measure was IOL centration in relation to capsulotomy and *** outcome measures were post-operative visual acuity,manifest refraction and aberration profile between ***:At 5 wk the visual,refractive outcomes and endothelial cell density were comparable between the 3 *** median circularity index of FLAC was statistically significantly different to M-CCC or PPC(1-10)groups(P<0.01)but PPC(11-20)was comparable to *** of IOL center in relation to capsulotomy was seen only between the PPC(1-10)group and FLAC group(P=0.02).The IOL was well centered in relation to the pupil in all the groups(P=0.46).The quality of vision parameters like the higher order aberrations,spherical aberration,coma,trefoil,modular transfer function,and Strehl ratio were comparable between the ***:Our study shows that despite differences in the morphology of capsulotomy produced by PPC,M-CCC,FLAC a well-centered IOL can be *** measured capsular morphology parameters do not affect visual outcomes.

According to WHO, cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide, accounting for 8.2 million deaths in 2012. Among several factors involved in the pathogenesis of cancer, free radical formation followed by damage to DNA and cell protein is one of the causes. Natural plant products have gained enormous interest in the prevention or treatment of chronic diseases. Ferulic acid, like other phenolic acids (caffeic acid, sinapic acid) possess anti cancer activity. A series of ferulic esters (FE1 - FE11) and ferulic amides (FA1 - FA10) were synthesized and evaluated for their cytotoxic activity.
