This study evaluated impacts of Coriaria nepalensis *** on soil characteristics,vegetation structure and composition,regeneration status and expected future compositional changes,biomass and carbon stock in tree species of a mixed conifer forest of Central *** sites(1 ha each in an old landslide area)differing in Coriaria density(low:20 individuals ha^(-1);medium:120 ***^(-1);high:190 ***^(-1))were used to enumerate the tree species.A total of 9 tree species and 2830 individuals were recorded from the three study sites that represented a gradient of Coriaria *** of species varied from 3 to 7 and the individuals from 690 to 1270 per site with lowest numbers at low Coriaria density and highest at medium Coriaria *** number of seedlings increased with increasing Coriaria density,and the sites were unique in their seedling composition,indicating marked temporal *** wise regeneration analysis showed that regeneration was poor at the site with low Coriaria density and good at the high-density site where many species emerged as *** results indicate that the ameliorative effects of Coriaria in terms of soil buildup,and accumulation of nutrients and organic matter helped more species to colonize the *** facilitative ability of Coriaria can be used to restore degraded forest ecosystems of Indian Central Himalaya.

Introduction:In Central Himalaya,anthropogenic activities have led to the widespread replacement of Banj oak(Quercus leucotrichophora)forest by Chir pine(Pinus roxburghii)for *** study was conducted to determine how natural Banj oak,Chir pine,and mixed oak-pine forest would differ in soil microbial biomass and soil *** microbial biomass nitrogen(SMBN)and phosphorus(SMBP),soil organic carbon(SOC)total nitrogen(TN),and total phosphorus(TP)in the 0 to 15 cm soil layer were investigated in the Central Himalayan region in the stands of Banj oak,mixed oak-pine,and Chir pine ***:The SMBN and SMBP were significantly higher in Banj oak and mixed oak-pine forest as compared to Chir pine *** ratios of SMBN to TN(SMBN/TN)and SMBP to TP(SMBP/TP)were significantly higher in the Chir pine forest,indicating that in this forest,the proportion of microbial biomass N and P to total soil N and P was higher as compared to Banj oak forest.A similar pattern of variation was found in relation to season across the forests,all with an apparent peak in the rainy ***:These results indicate that low microbial biomass N and P may be one of the reasons to create a nutrient poor site in Chir pine *** collection of pine litter by local people also impairs the return of nutrients to the soil and makes it difficult for Banj oak to re-invade areas occupied by Chir *** calls for cautions in large-scale conversions of the Banj oak forests to coniferous plantations as a forest management practice on concerns of sustaining soil productivity.

Invasive plant Ageratina adenophora(Sprengel)***&*** has invaded majority of the temperate forests in Kumaun,Central *** on *** invaded forest types,their structural attributes,population demography and regeneration status are still at rudimentary *** this,the present study was conducted to assess the impacts of *** on vegetational attributes and regeneration status of three forest types,viz.,Oak(Quercus oblongata ***),Pine(Pinus roxburghii Sarg.)and Cypress(Cupressus torulosa ***).We selected three sites for each forest type and each site was further purposively stratified into paired sampling plots of 1 ha each i.e.,*** invaded and uninvaded *** results showed large densities of cut stumps or felled trees throughout invaded sites,but with fewer fire signs in comparison to uninvaded *** uninvaded sites,total density and basal area calculated for woody species were relatively higher than those in invaded sites,although results were insignificant(p>0.05).With the exception for Cypress forests,vegetation indices showed low woody species richness and diversity in invaded Oak and Pine ***,regeneration of ***,*** and *** tree species did not differ significantly(p>0.05)between invaded and uninvaded *** insignificant differences clearly imply that ***'s presence has not entirely changed the perennial plant communities in terms of composition,structure and natural ***,tree species with poor or no regeneration status requires special attention and needs management strategies involving control of invasive species in forest ecosystems.

Owing to a predicted rise in temperature,increase in precipitation and the escalating anthropogenic stresses,the Himalayan ecosystems are the most threatened non-polar regions of the *** the past,there have been racing extinctions and range shifts of several life forms in this region,particularly of the plant ***,consistent qualitative and quantitative records on botanical baseline data on a regular basis are *** current communication attempts to provide a detailed account on the current state of knowledge and research gaps in floristic studies of Himachal Pradesh,Western *** on an extensive review of more than 140 studies in the form of scientific peer reviewed literature on floristics,medicinal and aromatic plants(MAPs),rare,endangered,threatened and endemic species and ethno-botany,it is revealed that the number of floristic studies in Himachal Pradesh have surged in the past years but studies pertaining to the lower plants remain ***,the remote valleys including micro-watersheds lying in the coldarid regions are relatively less studied in terms of available growing stock and population status of *** traditional ethno-botanical knowledge has been the major concern and,many threatened MAPs need to be accessed globally following IUCN ***,documentation of the conservation status of key MAPs,setting aside conservation areas around viable populations of threatened species,developing germplasm banks of the priority MAPs and monitoring the impacts of climate change has been suggested.

We studied moist deciduous forests of Chhattisgarh, India （1） to assess the effect of four levels of historic wildland fire frequency （high, medium, low, and no-fire） on regeneration of seedlings in fire affected areas during pre and post-fire seasons, （2） to evaluate vegetation struc- ture and diversity by layer in the four fire frequency zones, （3） to evalu- ate the impact of fire frequency on the structure of economically impor- tant tree species of the region, and （4） to quantify fuel loads by fire fre- quency level. We classified fire-affected areas into high, medium, low, and no-fire frequency classes based on government records. Tree species were unevenly distributed across fire frequency categories. Shrub density was maximum in zones of high fire frequency and minimum in low- frequency and no-fire zones. Lower tree density after fires indicated that regeneration of seedlings was reduced by fire. The population structure in the high-frequency zone was comprised of seedlings of size class （A） and saplings of size class （B）, represented by Diospyros melanoxylon, Dalbergia sissoo, Shorea robusta and Tectona grandis. Younger and older trees were more abundant for Tectona grandis and Dalbargia sis- soo after fire, whereas intermediate-aged trees were more abundant pre- fire, indicating that the latter age-class was thinned by the catastrophic effect of fire. The major contributing components of fuel load included duff litter and small woody branches and twigs on the forest floor. Total fuel load on the forest floor ranged from 2.2 to 3.38 Mg/ha. The netchange in fuel load was positive in high- and medium-frequency fire zones and negative under low- and no-fire zones. Repeated fires, how- ever, slowly reduced stand stability. An ecological approach is needed for fire management to restore the no-fire spatial and temporal structure of moist deciduous forests, their species composition and fuel loads. Ecological Study of Bryophytes on Platanus orientalis L. Trees in Nainital (Western Himalaya)

The bryophytic vegetation associated with Platanus orientalis trees were studied and compared with other important tree species of Nainital. In total 27 mosses and liverworts belonging to 14 families with three morphological groups formed the principle component of Platanus orientalis tree bark. Based on IVI (Important Value Index), Regmatodon orthostegius together with Brachymenium capitulatum formed the pioneer community, while Herpetineuron toccoae formed the climax community on the Platanus orientalis stems. Comparison of the bryoflora of P. orientalis with other dominant trees of this locality indicated that 15 species were common, while 12 species viz., Didymodon vinealis (Brid.) R.H., Bryoerythrophyllum dentatum (Mitt.) Chen, Gemmabryum apiculatum (Schw?gr.), Ditrichum heteromallum (Hedw.) Britt., Entodon chloropus Ren. & Card., Cylindrothecium laetum (Griff.) Paris, Fabronia schensiana C. Muell., Lejeunea tuberculosa Stephani, Levierella neckeroides (Griff.), Regmatodon orthostegius Mont., Rhynchostegiella menadensis (Lac.) Bartr. and Stereophyllum fulvum (Harv.) Jaeg. were confined to the tree barks of P. orientalis.
