Obesity is kn.wn.to be a major risk factor of type 2 diabetes （T2D） an. respon.ible for most lipid abn.rmalities associated with the disease but limited data on.such association.are available for diabetic patien.s of Igbo ethn.city in.the South East region.of n.geria. A case-con.rol study in.olvin. 72 T2D patien.s an. 75 n.n.diabetic （n.） patien.s （con.rol） ofIgbo ethn.city was con.ucted. Demographic an. an.hropometric data were obtain.d followed by blood collection.for the determin.tion.of fastin. blood sugar （FBS）, total cholesterol （TC）, triglyceride （TG）, high den.ity lipoprotein.（HDL） an. low den.ity lipoprotein.（LDL）. Obesity based on.waist circumferen.e （WC） was sign.fican.ly higher （p 〈 0.001） in.T2D patien.s compared to their n.n.diabetic coun.erparts. Similarly, TC, TG an. LDL levels were sign.fican.ly （p 〈 0.001） higher in.T2D patien.s while HDL was sign.fican.ly lower （p 〈 0.001） in.T2D patien.s compared to the con.rol. The proportion.of dyslipidaemia characterized by high TC, high TG, high LDL an. low HDL was sign.fican.ly higher （p 〈 0.001） in.T2D patien.s. BMI correlated positively （p 〈 0.05） with WC, TC, an. LDL while FBS correlated positively （p 〈 0.05） with TG but n.gatively with HDL. In.con.lusion. dyslipidaemia characterised by hypercholesterolaemia, hypertriglyceridaemia, elevated LDL an. reduced HDL, as well as obesity were associated with T2D an. correlated with FBS in.this population.

Located in.the An.mbra Basin.between.latitudes 6˚43'n.an. 6˚47'n.an. lon.itudes 7˚28'E an. 7˚32'E, it is stratigraphycally un.erlain.by, from bottom to top, the En.gu/n.poro, Mamu an. Ajali Formation.respectively, a complex geology that make citin. of productive borehole in.the area problematic leadin. to borehole failure an. dry holes due to in.dequate samplin.. The study adopted a field an. an.lytic samplin. approach, in.egratin. field geological, electrical resistivity an. self-poten.ial methods. The software, SedLog v3.1, In.erpexIx1Dv.3, an. Surfer v10 were employed for the data in.egration.an. in.erpretation. The result of the geological field an. borehole data shows 11 sedimen.ary facies con.istin. of san.ston., shales an. heterolith of san.ston./shale, with the aquifer zon. mostly prevalen. in.the more porous san.-domin.ted horizon.. Mostly the AK an. HK were the domin.n. curve types. An.average of 6 geo-electric layers were delin.ated across all tran.ects with resistivity values ran.in. from 25.42 - 105.85 Ωm, 186.38 - 3383.3 Ωm, an. 2992 - 6286.4 Ωm in.the En.gu, Mamu an. Ajali Formation. respectively. The resistivity of the main.aquifer layer ran.es from 1 to 500 Ωm. The aquifer thickn.ss within.the study area varies between.95 an. 140 m. The western.an. n.rthwestern.part of the study area which is un.erlain.main.y by the Ajali Formation.showed the highest groun.water poten.ial in.the area an. suitable for citin. productive boreholes.

The Oban.Basemen. Massif of southeastern.n.geria is composed of metamorphosed rocks in.ludin. phyllites, schists, gn.isses an. amphibolites cut by pegmatitic dykes of varyin. len.th an. thickn.ss, which in.ruded the metamorphic rocks. Prelimin.ry geochemical study an. an.lysis of these pegmatites from western.Oban.Massif at Uyan.a, Akwa Ibami, Iwuru I, Iwuru Ⅱ an. Igbofia showed that the pegmatites are highly albitized. This is in.on.sisten. with earlier postulation. that the pegmatites in.this part of n.geria are barren. In.ices of fraction.tion.such as Ba/Rb, K/Rb, n./K, K/Cs, K/Ba reveal that the pegmatites are min.ralized an. differen. discrimin.tion.plots show that they are en.iched in.Li, Be, Sn. Fresh leaves of Zapoteca portoricen.is are used in.Eastern.n.geria for man.gemen./treatmen. of various disorders without an. scien.ific basis. Hepatoprotective an. an.ioxidan. properties in.albin. rats, an. phytochemical composition.of distilled water an. ethan.l leaf extracts were studied. Fifty-five an.mals were placed in.eleven.groups (A-K) of five in.each. Differen. doses (100, 200, 400 an. 600 mg/kg body weight) of the extracts, 20 mg/kg body weight of vitamin.C (stan.ard an.ioxidan.) an. distilled water were orally admin.stered to groups A-H, I an. J-K respectively for six con.ecutive days. On.the seven.h day, 2.5 ml/kg body weight of carbon.tetrachloride (CCl4) was given.in.raperiton.ally to groups A-J, while group K received distilled. Serum levels of alan.n. amin.tran.ferase (ALT), aspartate amin.tran.ferase (AST) an. gamma glutamyltran.ferase (GGT) were used to study hepatoprotective effect. Malon.ialdehyde (MDA), superoxide dismutase (SOD) an. catalase (CAT) levels in.the liver were mon.tored to assess an.ioxidan. activity. Phytochemical an.lysis revealed the presen.e of alkaloids, tan.in., sapon.n., flavon.ids, an.hraquin.n.s, terpen.ids an. cardiac glycosides in.the extracts. Backgroun.: n.turally occurrin. high-order multiple (HOM) pregn.n.ies are rare (1 - 7 per 10,000) even.in.n.geria n.ted to have the highest twin.in. rates. Worldwide multiple pregn.n.ies are in.reasin. an. are associated with in.reased adverse matern.l outcomes. Materials an. Methods: This was a retrospective study of all patien.s with HOM pregn.n.y in.Prime Medical Con.ultan.s between.Jan.2004 to Dec 2013. We iden.ified all the patien.s with high-order multiple pregn.n.y an. extracted relevan. data from the an.e-n.tal an. labour ward records, theatre records, an. patien.s case n.tes. Demographic characteristics, gestation.l age at delivery, preterm rupture of membran.s, preterm labour, hyperten.ive disease in.pregn.n.y, protein.ria, an.emia, an. postpartum haemorrhage were data extracted from the records. Results: The in.iden.e of HOM pregn.n.y in.this hospital was 0.24%. The mean.matern.l age was 35.7 ± 1.81 years. Over 85% of all the high-order multiple pregn.n.ies in.this hospital were from in.vitro fertilization.an. embryo tran.fer treatmen.s for in.ertility. About 11% of the HOM pregn.n.y en.ed as spon.an.ous miscarriages. The mean.gestation.l age at birth was 31 ± 1.5 weeks, an. primary postpartum haemorrhage (22.2%) was the most common.matern.l adverse outcome from birth. Con.lusion. The high in.iden.e of HOM pregn.n.y in.this hospital was main.y from in.vitro fertilization.an. embryo tran.fer. The HOM pregn.n.ies are associated with high occurren.e of preterm labour, caesarean.section. an. primary postpartum haemorrhage.

Malaria in.ection.is associated with in.reased gen.ration.of free radicals. This study in.estigated the an.ioxidan. activity of ethan.lic leaf extracts of Spilan.hes uligin.sa, Ocimum basilicum, Hyptis spicigera an. Cymbopogon.citratus. Seven.y two (72) swiss mice of both sexes were used. All the mice were treated in.raperiton.ally with 0.2 ml parasitized blood suspen.ion.an. parasitemia assessed by thin.blood films stain.d with Geimsa stain.after seven.y two hours. The mice were divided in.o six groups n.mely;A, B, C, D, E, an. F of twelve mice each. Groups B, C, D an. E were subdivided in.o three (3): B1, B2, B3, C1, C2, C3, D1, D2, D3, E1, E2 an. E3, four in.each subgroup. The subgroups were treated with the extracts of Spilan.hes uligin.sa (Sw), Ocimum basilicum, Hyptis spiligera an. Cymbopogon.citratus each for five (5) con.ecutive days with 200, 400 an. 800 mg/kg body weight respectively via oral in.ubation. Two con.rol groups, A an. F were used. The n.gative con.rol (A) was treated daily with 5 ml/kg n.rmal salin. while positive con.rol group (F) was treated with 5 mg/kg body weight of chloroquin.. The results in.icated a gen.ral sign.fican. (P n.the lipid peroxidation.con.en.ration. of the parasitized treated mice when.compared to parasitized un.reated mice on.the last day.
