This study aims to ascertain the extent of the cocoa stem borer Eulophonotus myrmeleon distribution, outbreak, and damage to the cocoa plantations in six cocoa growing states in Nigeria. Three local government areas were selected from each of the six major cocoa states and three farms from each local government area. In each farm, 100 cocoa trees were randomly selected and inspected for symptoms and damages of E. myrmeleon. The result revealed that E. myrmeleon infestation has increased significantly (p = 0.01, df = 1, F = 41.77) in 2019 by 10% from the 2014 inspection. It also showed that the infestation level was significantly different from state to state. Symptoms of infestation include presence of entry/exit holes, woody exudates around the trees, yellowing and browning of the leaves. Damages caused by E. myrmeleon infestation are, loses of pod on the affected branch and tree and death of tree. Field observations showed clearly that stem borer is now becoming a serious problem and limiting considerably the production of cocoa in the region. It is time to give more attention to the biology and management of the pest. This is the first report detailing the symptoms and damage done by cocoa stem borers in Nigeria.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is reportedly the commonest metabolic disorder with multi organ involvement. By inducing DM (with Alloxan) in Wistar rats, current study investigated the changes in antioxidant activities of selected gastrointestinal (GI) tissues [stomach, duodenum, pancreas and liver], upon treatment with Silymarin and/or Vitamin C. One hundred and twenty five (125) adult male wistar rats of between 130 to 180 grams were procured for the study. Five units of one control and four experimental units were designated with twenty five (25) rats per group (n = 25);Unit 1: Control rats, Unit 2 were DM induced, Silymarin untreated rats, and Units 3, 4 and 5 were DM induced, vitamin C, Silymarin and Vitamin C + Silymarin treated respectively. Following four (4) weeks of administration of test substance(s), rats were euthanized and blood samples obtained for biochemical and antioxidant assay on aforementioned GI tissues. One way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Students t-test at p p < 0.05) at comparison of extract treated unit to control. Study also observed a significant change in pancreatic, liver, and duodenal anti-oxidant marker levels with Vitamin C, Silymarin and Vitamin C + Silymarin co-administrations to diabetic rats. It can therefore be said, that DM caused a destructive alteration pancreatic histo-architecture with improved functional capabilities in wistar rats at administration of Silymarin and vitamin C. Thus, Silymarin posed antioxidant potentials, with ameliorated pancreatic dysfunctions.

Background: Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) is associated with several maternal and perinatal complications. Early detection and treatment can improve pregnancy outcomes. Objectives: To determine the prevalence, risk factors and predictors of GDM in early pregnancy at the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, (UPTH), Port Harcourt Nigeria. Methods: A cohort of 235 mothers who registered for antenatal care between 15 - 18 weeks of gestation at UPTH was prospectively studied. Their socio-demographic data, examination findings, anthropometric measurements, fasting blood sugar at booking and OGTT results at 28 weeks gestation were collated and entered into PC with SPSS for windows version 21.0 which was also used for the analysis. Variables were expressed as absolute numbers, percentages or means with standard deviations and significant differences determined using chi square test or the student “t” test as appropriate. The level of significance was set at P < 0.05. Results: Of the 235 participants, 35 (14.9%) developed GDM. Women who had GDM were significantly older (P = 0.001), had higher weight (t = 2.95, P = 0.01), BMI (t = 2.29, P = 0.02), abdominal skin fold thickness (t = 4.15, P = 0.001), blood pressure (t = 3.38, P = 0.001) compared to women who did not. Previous history of GDM was significantly different between two groups as χ2 = 93.56 and P = 0.001. Abdominal skin fold thickness and prior GDM history were found to be independent predictors of GDM on application of multiple logistic regression analysis. Conclusion: The prevalence of GDM in Port Harcourt is 14.9% and major risk factors are obesity, previous GDM history, advanced age and hypertension. Abdominal skin fold thickness ≥ 20 mm is an independent predictor. The risk of developing GDM can be predicted in early second trimester using algorithm incorporating risk factor screening and anterior abdominal wall skin fold thickness estimation.

In the last few decades, several monitoring systems integrated with water level detection have been the major research focus. Production boost and its sustainability depend mainly on sustainable water supply, measuring water level, and avoiding waste of water is an essential task for all stakeholders. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to design and implement a mobile phone-based remote control. This will be applied to control the operation of a submersible motor in a water tank. The water level in the tank is detected and the device remotely turns the motor pump on/off. The design process is accomplished by developing an android application that works on GSM technology to manage the filling of water tank. An AT89C51 microcontroller is used for the desired programming. At the transmitting end, sensor is used for level detection and GSM module is used to send the information to user. According to this information, user controls the on/off operation of the pump. A SIM card is required for its operation and it works on attention (AT) commands. After the design and implementation of the device, the test results showed that all features of the device worked properly, and the device functions exactly as expected. More significantly, the paper has shown that ultrasonic sensors can be used to determine the level of water in a water tank and a GSM module can be used to control a submersible pump. The design and implementation of this device can help to reduce waste of time and power. Ultimately, it avoids water wastage thereby ensuring availability, conservation, and sustainability of water supply.

Effects of Carboxymethylcelluloses (CMC) on Some Hydraulic Properties of Sandy Soil

The property of hydrophilic polymers capable absorbing huge volumes of water led to many practical applications of these new materials in arid regions for improving the water retention in sandy soils. Effects of four carboxymethylcelluloses （CMC） mixed at various rates with the sandy soil, on the water-holding capacity and hydraulic conductivity （Ks） when leached with distilled water （simulating rain）, tap water, and saline water were evaluated. The maximum water absorption of CMCs ranged between 80 and 100 kg. kg^-1 of polymer; however, the absorbent swelling capacity decreased significantly with increasing the salt concentration in the solution. The water absorption capacity of CMCs decreased significantly when incorporated in the sandy soil compared to that of the absorbent alone. Application of CMC increased significantly the available water content up to 3 ± 0.5 times. All soils treated with CMCs showed a significant lower in Ks compared to the control soil. Meanwhile, Ks was found increased with increasing the salt concentration in the leaching solution. This understanding of characteristics of the absorbents and the interactions among absorbents, soil, and irrigation water quality would be of help in water management of sandy soil

1-((2-Carbamoylguanidino)(furan-2-ylmethyl)urea was synthesised by coupling purified furfural with urea. The compound was characterized by GC-MS, FTIR, and 1H-NMR. The pathogens, Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhi, Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis were isolated and screened with different concentrations of 1-((2-carbamoylguanidino)(furan-2-ylmethyl)urea. All the pathogens were susceptible to the synthesized compound except Bacillus subtilis. Due to this broad spectrum of activity, 1-((2-Carbamoylguanidino)(furan-2-ylmethyl))urea) can be use for various medicinal purposes and is therefore encouraged for the development of a novel drug in future.
