This study describes the bio-ecology of local Anopheles vectors, their abundance, type and vectoral competence in three communities around Kumasi Metropolis. The study sites were selected based on bio-ecologic zones （urban, peri-urban and rural） which influence habitat and behavior. Pyrethrum spray catch was used in the collection of indoor resting mosquitoes from bedrooms of study communities （June-August 2008）. The identification of mosquitoes was based on morphological keys earlier described. The blood meal taken and the stage of digestion and egg development were also observed. A total of 293 mosquitoes were collected and 50.5% were A. gambiae s.I. Of the three bio-ecologic zones： urban, 53.4% were A. gambiae s.l, 27.2% Culex and 19.4% Mansonia; peri-urban, 58% A. gambiae s. 1 and 42% Culex pipien s. 1 and rural, 40.2% A. gambiae s. 1, and 58.8% Culex sp respectively. About 96.6% of all mosquitoes collected had taken blood meals, with 50% of these being Anopheles gambiae s.I. Our findings indicate that urban rather exhibits rural characteristics and can best be described as ＂urban poor＂. However, more data need to be collected to ascertain this. The anopheline mosquitoes in the study communities are highly endophillic and anthropophagic and thus have high vectoral competence. The authors recommend frequent mosquito surveillance to avert malaria epidemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic encouraged the use of plastic-based personal protective equipment (PPE), which aidedgreatly in its management. However, the increased production and usage of these PPEs put a strain on the environment,especially in developing and underdeveloped countries. This has led various researchers to study low-costand effective technologies for the recycling of these materials. One such material is disposable facemasks. However,previous studies have only been able to engage electrically powered reactors for their thermochemical conversion,which is a challenge as these reactors cannot be used in regions with an insufficient supply of electricity. In thisstudy, the authors utilized a biomass-powered reactor for the conversion of waste disposable facemasks and almondleaves into hybrid biochar. The reactor, which is relatively cheap, simple to use, environmentally friendly, and modifiedfor biochar production, is biomass-powered. The co-carbonization process, which lasted 100 min, produced a 46%biochar yield, which is higher than previously obtained biochar yields by other researchers. The biochar thus obtainedwas characterized to determine its properties. FTIR analysis showed that the biochar contained functional groupssuch as alkenes, alkynes, hydroxyls, amines, and carbonyls. The EDX analysis revealed that the biochar was primarilymade of carbon, tellurium, oxygen, and calcium in the ratios of 57%, 19%, 9%, and 7%, respectively. The inclusion ofthe facemask decreased the surface area and porosity of the biochar material, as evidenced by its surface area andpore characteristics.

Background: Retention of fetal bones is a rare cause of abnormal uterine bleeding. Others may present as subfertility, chronic pelvic pain, abnormal vaginal discharge, menometrorrhagia, dysmenorrhea and spontaneous expulsion of bony fragments. Incidence is 0.26% among patients undergoing hysteroscopy. Aim: To document a pattern of presentation of retained fetal bone and its management. Case Presentation: Our patient is an 18-year old who presented with vaginal bleeding of four weeks duration and managed for abnormal uterine bleeding due to retained fetal bone following second trimester abortion. Conclusion: The use of transvaginal ultrasound in making diagnosis of retained fetal bone is effective. Treatment by removal of bones through evacuation by dilatation and curettage or hysteroscopy brings about resolution of symptoms. Use of pelvic ultrasonography to confirm complete evacuation of the uterus after abortion especially second trimester abortion could aid in early diagnosis and management of incomplete abortion.

Aural Toileting and Dressing—Important Intervention Measures in the Management of Acute Suppurative Otitis Media

Background: Otitis media is one of the most common childhood infections, the leading cause of doctor’s visit by children in ENT clinic. The acute form if not recognized early is commonly characterized by suppuration from the middle ear following perforation of the tympanic membrane otherwise referred to as acute suppurative otitis media (ASOM). If not adequately treated, it progresses to chronic suppurative otitis media with attendant challenges in management. Ceasation of ear discharge is an indication of resolution of disease. The objective of this study is to appraise the value of local ear suction toileting and dressing in the ceasation of ear discharge in acute suppurative otitis media. Materials and Method: Consecutive new cases of acute suppurative otitis media seen at the Ear, Nose and Throat clinic of a tertiary health centre in north western Nigeria were assessed for efficacy of aural toileting and dressing with antibioctic impregnated guaze in the treatment of acute suppurative otitis media and compared with patients with similar disease without aural toileting and dressing or dressing with normal saline soaked guaze in addition to systemic antibiotic and antihistamine medications. Ear toileting was done by suctioning the discharge with suction machine, and cleaning the external auditory canal with hydrogen peroxide and methylated spirit. They were then dressed with gauze impregnated with antibiotic ear drops daily until there was no more ear discharge. The period of ceasation of ear discharge in each group was assessed. Results: There were 39 patients with acute suppurative otitis media (ASOM). Eighteen were females (46.2%) while 21 were males (53.8%), giving M:F ratio 1:2.1. Their ages ranged between 1 month and 45 years. About 36 (92.3%) were children and out of this, 28 (77.8%) were less than 5 years old. Background: Breast cancer is the leading cause of death from cancer in women worldwide. It can be stratified by histological and immunopathological analysis as well as by molecular subtypes. Socioeconomic and cultural-mediated factors contribute to breast cancer heterogeneity and overall survivability. Objective: The aim of this study was to determine the influence of socioeconomic profile on the uptake of immunohistochemistry (IHC) services among women with breast cancer attending tertiary health facilities in Imo State. Methodology: This descriptive cross-sectional study was carried out among women with breast cancer in Imo State. The instrument for data collection used was a structured questionnaire constructed in line with the objectives of the study. A total of 121 respondents were selected randomly from a target study population of 891 using a systematic sampling technique. The software Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 21 was used for data analysis. Results: The mean age of the 121 respondents in this study was 45.2 ± 0.7 years. Age and education levels of the respondents were found to significantly influence the utilization of IHC services (P Conclusion: In our study, the consumption of IHC services was influenced significantly by the respondents’ age and level of education. Consequently, public health awareness programmes centred on the importance of IHC services in the management of breast cancer should be encouraged, so as to reach the less educationally endowed and older women in order to save more lives.

Thermoplastic immobilizing masks have dosimetric effects on the patient’s skin dose. The thermoplastic percentage depth dose (PDD), equivalent thickness of water for the masks and surface doses were determined. The surface dose factors due to the thermoplastic mask was found to be 1.7949, 1.9456, 2.0563, 2.1967, 2.3827, 2.5459 and 2.6565 for field sizes of 5 × 5, 8 × 8, 10 × 10, 12 × 12, 15 × 15, 18 × 18 and 20 × 20 cm2 respectively which shifted the percentage depth dose curve to lower values. The physical thermoplastic thickness was measured to be between 2.30 and 1.80 mm, and the equivalent thicknesses of water, de, were determined to be between 1.2 and 1.00 mm. This meant that, as the mask thickness decreased, its water equivalent thickness also decreased. The presence of the mask material increased the skin dose to a factor of 1%. The thermoplastic mask factor was also found to be 0.99.

Patient Satisfaction after Elective Major Gynaecological Surgery in 2 Reference Hospitals in Yaounde: A Cross-Sectional Study

Introduction: Patient satisfaction is a quality-of-care measure and reveals patients’ appreciation of healthcare delivery. We sought to measure patient satisfaction following major gynaecological surgeries in 2 University Teaching Hospitals in Yaounde, Ca.eroon. Methods: This study was a cross-sectional, prospective study over 9 months (October 1st, 2018, to June 30th, 2019) at the Yaounde Gynaeco-Obstetric and Paediatric Hospital (YGOPH) and the Yaounde Central Hospital (YCH). By administering a modified Surgical Satisfaction Questionnaire (SSQ-8) via phone call 6 months after surgery, we appreciated and scored key aspects linked to patient satisfaction and obtained information on post-operative complications. Data were analysed using Microsoft Excel 18 and SPSS 21 setting significance at p Results: We recruited 72 patients aged 24 to 68 years. Our participants had a mean satisfaction score of 26 ± 7.854 (59.7% satisfied and 40.3% dissatisfied). All aspects tested on the SSQ-8 questionnaire influenced patient satisfaction. Patients who said they were satisfied with pain control after surgery (OR = 0.207 CI = 0.070 - 0.609, p = 0,003), and with surgical results in the SSQ-8 questionnaire (OR = 0.053, CI = 0.011 - 0.254, p < 0.001) achieved statistically significant post-operative satisfaction. Contrarily, patients who were dissatisfied with surgery results (OR = 132.000, CI = 15.256 - 114.131, p < 0.001) and those who developed complications (OR = 7.922, CI = 2.241 - 28.004, p < 0.001) were significantly dissatisfied with surgery. Additionally, 47.2% declared a poor post-operative current health status versus 52.8% who claimed a good post-operative current health status. Following multivariate analysis, satisfaction with the results of surgery (OR = 0.071, CI = 0.008 - 0.657, p = 0.020) and the occurrence of complications (OR = 7.284, CI = 1.146 - 46.273, p = 0.035) were the main determinants of patient satisfaction.
