Relationship Between Allelopathic Effects and Functional Traits of Different Allelopathic Potential Rice Accessions at Different Growth Stages

In this study,effects of temperature,light and their interactions on allelopathic effects and the functional traits specific leaf area(SLA)and stem mass fraction(SMF)of different allelopathic potential rice accessions at different growth stages were *** main results were as follows:Allelopathic responses to temperature and light varied with different allelopathic potential rice accessions at different growth *** the rise of temperature and the extension of photoperiod,allelopathic effect increased firstly and then decreased at 2–3 leaf stage,but increased constantly at the 4–5 and 7–8 leaf stages in strong allelopathic rice accessions[***,F1(***×RD23),F2(RL159 and RL169)].Temperature had significant impact on allelopathic effect without considering light factors,but light showed little effect on rice allelopathy at the same temperature *** greatest allelopathic effect was attained with moderate temperature and long photoperiod at 2–3 leaf stage in strong allelopathic rice accessions,but all the rice accessions showed weak allelopathic effects at the low temperature condition(15oC/10oC),and the influence of different factors on allelopathy followed a general trend as temperature>leaf stage>light,indicating that among the multiple factors impacting rice allelopathy,temperature was the main *** characteristics of F1 and F2 to various temperature and light were similar to ***,showing that allelopathic genes from wild rice can be expressed in its *** and light also had significant effects on SLA and SMF,and rice allelopathy was closely correlative to SLA in strong allelopathic rice accessions at the 4–5 and 7–8 leaf stages,but there was no correlation between rice allelopathy and SMF at different growth *** results suggested that rice adjust the relationship between allelopathy and SLA and adapt to the varied environments,and that high temperature and long phot

Differential effects of physical activity and sleep duration on cognitive function in young adults

Purpose: Although exercise and sleep duration habits are associated with cognitive function, their beneficial effects on cognitive function remain unclear. We aimed to examine the effect of sleep duration and daily physical activity on cognitive function, elucidating the neural mechanisms using near-infrared spectroscopy(NIRS).Methods: A total of 23 healthy young adults(age 22.0 ± 2.2 years) participated in this study. Exercise amount was assessed using a uniaxial accelerometer. We evaluated total sleep time(TST) and sleep efficiency by actigraphy. Cognitive function was tested using the N-back task, the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test(WCST), and the Continuous Performance Test—Identical Pairs(CPT-IP), and the cortical oxygenated hemoglobin levels during a word fluency task were measured with ***: Exercise amount was significantly correlated with reaction time on 0- and 1-back tasks(r = —0.602, p = 0.002; r = —0.446, p = 0.033,respectively), whereas TST was significantly correlated with % corrects on the 2-back task(r = 0.486, p = 0.019). Multiple regression analysis,including exercise amount, TST, and sleep efficiency, revealed that exercise amount was the most significant factor for reaction time on 0- and 1-back tasks(b = —0.634, p = 0.002; b = —0.454, p = 0.031, respectively), and TST was the most significant factor for % corrects on the 2-back task(b = 0.542, p = 0.014). The parameter measured by WCST and CPT-IP was not significantly correlated with TST or exercise amount. Exercise amount, but not TST, was significantly correlated with the mean area under the NIRS curve in the prefrontal area(r = 0.492, p = 0.017).Conclusion: Exercise amount and TST had differential effects on working memory and cortical activation in the prefrontal area. Daily physical activity and appropriate sleep duration may play an important role in working memory.

Safety and effectiveness of propofol sedation during and after outpatient colonoscopy

Background and Aims:The clinical introduction of hepcidin25(Hep25)has led to a more detailed understanding of its relationship with ferroportin(FP)and divalent metal transporter1 in primary iron overload syndromes(PIOSs).In 2012,we proposed a classification of PIOSs based on the Hep25/FP system,which consists of prehepatic aceruloplasminemia,hepatic hemochromatosis(HC),and posthepatic FP disease(FP-D).However,in consideration of accumulated evidence on PIOSs,we aimed to renew the ***:We reviewed the 2012 classification and retrospectively renewed it according to new information on ***:Iron-loading anemia was included in PIOSs as a prehepatic form because of the newly discovered erythroferrone-induced suppression of Hep25,and the state of traditional FP-D was remodeled as the BIOIRON *** key molecules responsible for prehepatic PIOSs are low transferrin saturation in aceruloplasminemia and increased erythroferrone production by erythroblasts in iron-loading *** PIOSs comprise four genotypes of HC,in each of which the synthesis of Hep25 is inappropriately reduced in the *** Hep25 synthesis is adequate in posthepatic PIOSs;however,two mutant FP molecules may resist Hep25 differently,resulting in SLC40A1-HC and FP-D,*** phenotypes are diagnosed using laboratory tests,including circulating Hep25,followed by suitable *** sequencing of the candidate genes may be outsourced to gene centers when *** kits for the prevalent mutations,such as C282Y,may be the first choice for a genetic analysis of HC in ***:The revised classification may be useful worldwide.

Clinical significance of white gastric crypt openings observed via magnifying endoscopy

AIM:To evaluate the relationship between Helicobacter pylori(***)-induced gastritis and white gastric mucosal crypt openings(COs)in the gastric ***:A total of 175 consecutive patients(including 69 patients with gastric cancer)were enrolled in this *** used magnifying endoscopy(ME)to observe the mucosa microsurface of the lesser and greater curvature of the gastric corpus(350 areas in all).We focused on areas with a round pit microstructure(primarily observed in non-atrophied areas)and evaluated the white openings of these gastric *** classified the whiteness of the COs as the"white-edged dark spot"type(consisting of a dark spot bordered by white);the"white"type(pure white with no dark spot);and the"dense white pit(DWP)"type(dense white,resembling a snowball).Gastritis was also histologically evaluated according to the updated Sydney ***:We detected round COs using ME in 246 of the 350 areas *** histological examination showed significantly more mononuclear cells and neutrophil infiltration in the"white"and"DWP"types than the"white-edged dark spot"type(P<0.001).Furthermore,significantly high-grade inflammation and evidence of active ***-induced gastritis was observed in the"DWP"type(P<0.001).Significant differences were observed in the whiteness of COs between ***-positive(n=139)and negative(n=36)patients(P<0.001).The sensitivity and specificity of the"white"and"DWP"types for predicting *** infection were78.5%and 81.7%,*** the patients with gastric cancer,22.5%(18/80)had"white-edged dark spots",51.3%(41/80)had"white"COs,and 26.3%(21/80)had"DWP"-type COs."DWPs"were frequently observed among patients with undifferentiated gastric cancer[45.7%(16/35)].CONCLUSION:CO whiteness detected via ME was associated with histological evidence of gastritis and helps to predict the severity of inflammation and *** activity.

Prevention of hepatocellular carcinoma: Focusing on antioxidant therapy

Oxidative stress has been investigated in the context of alcoholic liver injury for many years and shown to be a causal factor of chronic hepatitis C(CHC), nonalcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH), drug-induced liver injury, Wilson's disease, and hemochromatosis. In CHC, it has been demonstrated that oxidative stress plays an important role in hepatocarcinogenesis. In cases with persistent hepatitis due to failure of hepatitis C virus eradication,or chronic liver disease, such as NASH, the treatment of which remains unestablished, it is important to reduce serum alanine aminotransferase levels and prevent liver fibrosis and development of hepatocellular carcinoma. This also suggests the importance of antioxidant therapy. Among treatment options where it would be expected that anti-inflammatory activity plays a role in their confirmed efficacy for chronic hepatitis, iron depletion therapy, glycyrrhizin, ursodeoxycholic acid, Sho-Saiko-To, and vitamin E can all be considered antioxidant therapies. To date, however, the ability of these treatments to prevent cancer has been confirmed only in CHC. Nevertheless, anti-inflammatory and antifibrotic effects have been demonstrated in other liver diseases and these therapies may potentially be effective for cancer prevention.

Contribution of CD3 ε Epitope and Oxidative Type of Copper-Zinc Superoxide Dismutase to the Degeneration Processes of Cerebellar Purkinje Cells in Patients with Multiple System Atrophy-Cerebellar Type (MSA-C: Olivopontocerebellar Atrophy, OPCA): An Immunohistochemical Study

Objective: This study aimed to investigate the contribution of CD3 epsilon (ε) epitope and oxidative type of copper-zinc superoxide dismutase to the degeneration processes of cerebellar Purkinje cells in patients with Multiple System Atrophy-Cerebellar type (MSA-C). Methods: This retrospective study was carried out on autopsy specimens of 17 patients with sporadic MSA-C and 10 normal individuals. Paraffin sections of autopsied cerebella and pontes were immunostained with polyclonal antibodies against CD3 ε epitope and oxidative modification to cysteine sulfonic acid of cys111 in human copper-zinc superoxide dismutase (Ox-SOD1). With respect to the areas of CD3-ε-epitope expression, the immunohistochemical study and the quantitative statistical analysis between the areas of CD3-ε-epitope expression in the surviving Purkinje cells of MSA-C patients and their disease duration were performed. Results: The cell bodies and dendritic arborization including primary, secondary, and tertiary dendrites of normal Purkinje cells were intensely immunostained by the antibody against CD3 ε epitope. Both the immunohistochemical study and the quantitative statistical analysis revealed that the areas positive for CD3 ε epitope disappeared in the order from tertiary dendrites, secondary dendrites, primary dendrites toward the cell bodies, along with the disease progression. In addition, Glial Cytoplasmic Inclusions (GCIs) and Neuronal Cytoplasmic Inclusions (NCIs) were strongly positive for CD3 ε epitope. The surviving Purkinje cells in MSA-C showed immunostaining by the anti-Ox-SOD1 antibody, although normal Purkinje cells did not. Conclusion: Based on the oxidative stress that the surviving Purkinje cells in MSA-C express Ox-SOD1, the functions of morphogenesis and morphological maintenance related to CD3-ε-epitope expression of the MSA-C Purkinje cells are impaired from the peripheral dendrites toward the cell bodies as the center of the Purkinje cell system.
