Effect of phosphorus fluctuation caused by river water dilution in eutrophic lake on competition between blue-green alga Microcystis aeruginosa and diatom Cyclotella sp.

Tega-numa （Lake Tega） is one of the eutrophic lakes in Japan. For the improvement of water quality in Lake Tega, the North- chiba Water Conveyance Channel was constructed in 2000, which transfer water from Tone River into the lake. After 2000, the dominant species of diatoms, mainly Cyclotella sp., have been replacing blue-green algae, mainly Microcystis aeruginosa in Lake Tega. This transition of dominant species would be due to the dilution, but the detail mechanism has not been understood yet. This study examined the relationship between phosphorus fluctuation caused by river water dilution to Lake Tega and dominance of algal species, M. aeruginosa or Cyclotella sp. based on the single-species and the mixed-species culture experiments. The single-species culture experiment showed that the half-saturation constant and uptake rate of phosphorus were one order lower and seven times higher for M. aeruginosa than those for Cyclotella sp. These findings implied that M. aeruginosa would possess a potential for the growth and survival over Cyclotella sp. in the phosphorus limited condition. The superiority of M. aeruginosa was reflected in the outcome of the mixed-species culture experiment, i.e., dominance of M. aeruginosa, even phosphorus concentration was lowered to 0.01 mg-P/L. Therefore, it could be concluded that the decrease in phosphorus concentration due to the river water dilution to Lake Tega would be interpreted as a minor factor for the transition of dominant species from M. aeruginosa to Cyclotella sp.

Seasonal changes in TC and WSOC and their ^13C isotope ratios in Northeast Asian aerosols： land surface–biosphere–atmosphere interactions

In order to understand the relative importance of anthropogenic and biological sources of carbonaceous aerosols in Northeast Asia,we measured total carbon(TC)and water-soluble organic carbon(WSOC)and their stable carbon isotope ratios(d^(13)C)in total suspended particulates collected from Sapporo,northern Japan(43.07°N,141.36°E)over a 1-year period(during 2 September 2009and 5 October 2010).Temporal variations of TC showed a gradual decrease from mid-autumn to winter followed by a gradual increase to growing season with a peak in early *** d^(13)C_(TC)and d^(13)C_(WSOC)showed very similar temporal trends with a gradual enrichment of^(13)C from mid-autumn to winter followed by a depletion in the^(13)C to early summer and thereafter it remained stable,except for few *** on the results obtained together with the air mass trajectories,we found that biogenic emissions including biological particles(e.g.,pollen)and secondary organic aerosol formation from biogenic volatile organic compounds are the important sources of carbonaceous aerosols in spring/summer whereas fungal spores from soil and biomass burning and enhanced fossil fuel combustion contribute significantly in autumn/winter and in winter,respectively,in Northeast Asia.

Heavy Ion Beam Probe Measurement in Turbulence Diagnostic Simulator

A numerical measurement module simulating a heavy ion beam probe was developed, and numerical measurements of electrostatic potential and density fluctuations are carried out for 3-D turbulent data generated by a global simulation of drift-interchange mode turbulence in helical plasmas. The deviation between measured and local values is estimated. It is found that the characteristic structures can be detected in spite of the screening effect due to the finite spatial resolution.

A study on vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials via galvanic vestibular stimulation in normal people

Objectives: The aim of our study is to examine vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials(VEMPs) elicited by the galvanic vestibular stimulation in the sternocleidomastoid muscle(SCM) in healthy subjects for clinical applications of auditory neuropathy or vestibular neuropathy in the ***: We enrolled sixteen healthy subjects to record the average responses of SCM to galvanic vestibular stimulation(GVS) [current 3 mA;duration 1 ms] by electromyography(EMG). SPSS 18.0 software was used to analyze the obtained data for mean and standard ***: In all healthy subjects mastoid-forehead galvanic vestibular stimulation produced a positive-negative biphasic EMG responses on SCM ipsilateral to the cathodal electrode. The latency of p13 was 11.7 ± 3.0 ms. The latency of n23 was 17.8 ± 3.4 ms. The amplitude of p13-n23 was147.0 ± 69.0 μV. The interaural asymmetry ratio(AR) of p13, n23 latency and the amplitude was respectively 0.12 ± 0.09, 0.08 ± 0.08 and0.16 ± ***: Galvanic vestibular stimulation could elicit biphasic EMG responses from SCM via the vestibular nerve but not from the otolith organs. Galvanic stimulation together with air conducted sound(ACS) or bone conducted vibration(BCV) can elicit VEMPs and may enable the differentiation of retrolabyrinthine lesions from labyrinthine lesions in vestibular system.

Auditory symptoms and psychological characteristics in adults with auditory processing disorders

Most adults with auditory processing disorder(APD) often have trouble at work. It is possible that these listening problems in adults with APD influence their mental health. Thus, we have to take the subject's personality and mental status into consideration when supporting subjects with APD. However, studies on APD in adults are comparatively rare. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the relationships between the results of auditory tests, APD symptoms, and psychological status in subjects with APD. This study included 22 adults who complained of listening problems in everyday life, and they underwent auditory processing tests and were questioned regarding their psychological *** the results of the auditory processing tests, all subjects showed low scores on at least one test; therefore, they were suspected of having APD. Especially, the scores were low on the auditory memory test. Furthermore, subjects with APD show relatively similar psychological characteristics to each other. However, there was no significant relationship between the results of the auditory processing tests and psychological *** have to take notice of a subject's psychological state when they perceive their listening difficulties as a large-scale problem and feel anxious as a result. For this purpose, we should take psychological characteristics into consideration at the time of the medical examination interview before audio-psychological testing.

Binaural integration abilities in bilateral cochlear implant user

Bilateral Cochlear implants (CIs) improved speech intelligibility, speech perception in background noise, and sound localization in quiet and noisy situations. However, it is unclear whether these advantages essentially result in binaural integration of acoustic stimuli from each ear. In this study, we investigated the effectiveness of binaural integration by bilateral CIs placement using binaural hearing tests and subjective auditory perceptual assessment. A 61-year-old bilateral CIs subject underwent the following four tests:the Japanese Hearing in Noise Test (HINT-J), the dichotic listening test (DLT), the Rapidly Alternating Speech Perception (RASP) test, and subjective auditory perceptual assessment. The HINT-J score was significantly higher for bilateral CIs than for a unilateral CI. However, DLT and the RASP test revealed contradictory results. Subjective auditory perceptual assessment revealed active and bright impressions for bilateral hearing, which were also noisy and strong compared with those for unilateral hearing. The results of this study revealed that bilateral CIs improved speech perception in background noise and an improved auditory impression, although the bilateral integration abilities were not improved. This was probably because the patient was required to combine information from the two ears into a single perception in DLT and the RASP test. More longitudinal data should be collected and analyzed in future studies to evaluate the long-term effects of bilateral CIs. A case of auditory neuropathy revealed by OTOF gene mutation analysis in a junior high school girl

Objective: Congenital auditory neuropathy(AN) affects hearing and speech development. The degree of hearing difficulty in congenital AN varies as a function of pathology at the inner ear hair cell(IHC) synapses or the auditory nerve. We report a case of a Chinese girl with AN revealed by OTOF(otoferlin) gene mutation analysis who had only a mild hearing ***: A 13-year-old Chinese girl was diagnosed as having congenital AN on the basis of OTOF gene mutation analysis. She manifest a mild sensorineural hearing loss with 50% maximum monosyllable speech discrimination rate, normal DPOAEs(distortion product otoacoustic emissions) beyond ambient noise levels, only SPs(summating potentials) evoked during ECoG(electrocochleography) and absent ABRs(auditory evoked brainstem responses) bilaterally to clicks presented at 100 d Bn HL. She was able to effectively communicate with others by speech reading owing to her mild hearing loss. Moreover, bilateral hearing aids helped her to ***: Our patient was demonstrated to have a mutation on the OTOF gene. Nevertheless, she was able to communicate using auditory visual speech reading in spite of a mild auditory threshold elevation probably due to partial pathology at the IHC synapses or in the auditory nerve.

A child with severe inner ear malformations with favorable hearing utilization and balance functions after wearing hearing aids

Infants with congenital deafness caused by severe bilateral inner ear malformations frequently suffer from severe hearing loss and poor balance. Unfortunately, the use of hearing aids is usually ineffective in recovering hearing, necessitating cochlear implants. We report a case of a 6-year-old boy with congenital deafness and bilateral inner ear malformations(right side, incomplete partition type I [IP-I]; left side, common cavity deformity). Hearing aids had a remarkable effect in this patient, enabling sufficient and favorable hearing recovery such as to allow the patient to engage in daily conversations. Per-rotatory nystagmus was recorded on an electronystagmogram for both right and left rotations in a damped rotational chair test. It is rare for deaf children with severe bilateral inner ear malformation to demonstrate favorable development in hearing and good equilibrium function. Our findings suggest that auditoryevestibular hair cells in this patient may have been partially preserved despite IP-I in the right ear and common cavity deformity of the left ear.

Size-segregated(9 stages)n-alkanes,polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons(PAHs)and hopanes in the urban(Baoji city in inland China),mountain(*** in east coastal China)and marine(Okinawa Island, Japan)atmospheres over East Asia were studied using a GC/MS *** of n-alkanes (1698±568 ng m-3 in winter and 487±145 ng m-3 in spring),PAHs(536±80 and 161±39 ng m-3),and hopanes(65±24 and 20±2.4 ng m-3)in the urban air are 1?2 orders of magnitude higher than those in the mountain aerosols and 2?3 orders of magnitude higher than those in the marine *** ratios of n- alkanes,PAHs and hopanes clearly demonstrate coal-burning emissions as the major source of the determined organic *** distributions of fossil fuel derived n-alkane,PAHs and hopanes were found as a unimodal in most cases,peaking at 0.7?1.1μm *** contrast,plant wax derived n-alkanes present a bimodal distribution with two peaks at the sizes of 0.7?1.1μm and>4.7μm in the summer mountain and spring marine *** the three types of samples,geometric mean diameter(GMD)of the determined organics in fine mode(<2.1μm)was the smallest(av.0.63μm in spring)in the urban samples and the largest(1.01μm)in the marine samples,whereas the GMD in coarse mode(≥2.1μm)was smallest (3.48μm)in the marine aerosols and largest(4.04μm)in the urban *** fine mode of GMDs in the urban and mountain samples were larger in winter than in spring and ***,GMDs of 3-and 4- ring PAHs were larger than 5-and 6-ring PAHs in the three types of *** differences in GMDs may be interpreted by coagulation and repartitioning of organic compound during a long range transport from the inland continent to the marine site,suggesting that the size changes arising from these physical processes must be included in climate models in relevant to organic aerosols
