Chemotherapy and molecular targeting therapy for recurrent cervical cancer

For patients with primary stage IVB, persistent, or recurrent cervical cancer, chemotherapy remains the standard treatment, although it is neither curative nor associated with long-term disease control. In this review, we summarized the history of treatment of recurrent cervical cancer, and the current recommendation for chemotherapy and molecular targeted therapy. Eligible articles were identified by a search of the MEDLINE bibliographical database for the period up to November 30, 2014. The search strategy included the following any or all of the keywords：＂uterine cervical cancer＂, ＂chemotherapy＂, and ＂targeted therapies＂. Since cisplatin every 21 days was considered as the historical standard treatment for recurrent cervical cancer, subsequent trials have evaluated and demonstrated activity for other agents including paclitaxel, gemcitabine, topotecan and vinorelbine among others. Accordingly, promising agents were incorporated into phase III trials. To examine the best agent to combine with cisplatin, several landmark phase III clinical trials were conducted by Gynecologic Oncology Group （GOG） and Japan Clinical Oncology Group （JCOG）. Through, GOG204 and JCOG0505, paclitaxel/cisplatin （TP） and paclitaxel/carboplatin （TC） are now considered to be the recommended therapies for recurrent cervical cancer patients. However, the prognosis of patients who are already resistant to chemotherapy, are very poor. Therefore new therapeutic strategies are urgently required. Molecular targeted therapy will be the most hopeful candidate of these strategies. From the results of GOG240, bevacizumab combined with TP reached its primary endpoint of improving overall survival （OS）. Although, the prognosis for recurrent cervical cancer patients is still poor, the results of GOG240 shed light on the usefulness of molecular target agents to chemotherapy in cancer patients. Activities of liquid Fe-As and Fe-Sb alloys saturated with carbon

A solid iron base alloy of the so-called furnace residue is often formed as a by-product in reduction smelting of lead sinter and scraps with high contents of arsenic and antimony. The use of phase separation into a liquid iron-rich alloy and a liquid lead-rich alloy in lead-iron-arsenic and lead-iron-antimony systems saturated with carbon at relatively low temperatures of about 1200~C was proposed in a new process for treating the fumace residue to recover valuable elements into the lead-rich alloy and fLx toxic arsenic into the iron-rich alloy. As a fundamental study for the proposed process, the activity coefficients and interaction parameters of the Fe-As and Fe-Sb systems saturated with carbon at 1200℃ were derived in this study, based on the determined phase relations in the Fe-Pb-As and Fe-Pb-Sb systems saturated with carbon.

Sensory Disturbance as a Characteristic Symptoms of Methylmercury Poisoning in Niigata, Japan

Fifty years have passed from the first official recognition of the methylmercury （MeHg） poisoning in Niigata （so called the second Minamata disease）, Japan in 2015. The first case of MeHg poisoning was found in January 1965, when two surveys were carried out for 20,000 inhabitants lived within 15 km from the mouth of the Agano river. From these surveys, 26 cases （including 5 cases of death） were officially recognized as MeHg poisoning. Moreover, 9 cases who had no symptoms but whose hair mercury concentration were over 200 ppm were found. Within 20 cases, 15 cases are among 26 cases officially recognized as having MeHg poisoning and 5 cases are among 9 cases who had no symptoms but whose hair mercury concentration were over 200 ppm in 1965. The distal dominant sensory disturbances of the extremities lasted for more than several decades among 20 cases. The sensory disturbance of the bilateral distal extremities could be used as the gold standard for the diagnosis of MeHg poisoning in the exposed areas. The distal dominant sensory disturbance of the extremities is a typical characteristic and important sign of the MeHg poisoning.

Effect of N,N-Dimethylglycine on Homocysteine Metabolism in Rats Fed Folate-Sufficient and Folate-Deficient Diets

Objective This study aimed to investigate the effects of N,N-dimethylglycine(DMG) on the concentration and metabolism of plasma homocysteine(pHcy) in folate-sufficient and folate-deficient *** In this study, 0.1% DMG was supplemented in 20% casein diets that were either folatesufficient(20 C) or folate-deficient(20 CFD). Blood and liver of rats were subjected to assays of Hcy and its metabolites. Hcy and its related metabolite concentrations were determined using a liquid chromatographic *** Folate deprivation significantly increased pHcy concentration in rats fed 20 C diet(from 14.19 ±0.39 μmol/L to 28.49 ± 0.50 μmol/L;P < 0.05). When supplemented with DMG, pHcy concentration was significantly decreased(12.23 ± 0.18 μmol/L) in rats fed 20 C diet but significantly increased(31.56 ±0.59 μmol/L) in rats fed 20 CFD. The hepatic methionine synthase activity in the 20 CFD group was significantly lower than that in the 20 C group;enzyme activity was unaffected by DMG supplementation regardless of folate sufficiency. The activity of hepatic cystathionine β-synthase(CBS) in the 20 CFD group was decreased but not in the 20 C group;DMG supplementation enhanced hepatic CBS activity in both groups, in which the effect was significant in the 20 C group but not in the other *** DMG supplementation exhibited hypohomocysteinemic effects under folate-sufficient conditions. By contrast, the combination of folate deficiency and DMG supplementation has deleterious effect on pHcy concentration.

Development and Evaluation of an All Weather-Type Solar Drying House to Make for Wood Pellet Material

To suppress the global environment pollutions, we tried to develop a new-type solar drying house by improving a typical agricultural green-house, so that an all weather-type solar drying house was invented ultimately. This house is capable to dry raw wood materials (Ogako) into suitable moisture content (Mc) to make a wood pellet. The all weather-type solar Ogako drying house is covered with a triple transparent film, and an open/close free-type shield sheet is spread along with house’s inner surface with a small space, which is opened when solar radiation is incident on the house in daytime and closed to prevent heat loss from the house while out of sun shining in night. Inside of the all weather-type solar Ogako drying house, there are four belt-conveyors over which four top radiation panels are hanged, and on which four Ogako agitators are touched, a turn-table, two hoppers, four small fans, and besides, a floor heating is molded in concrete floor. Also on the north wall outside the house, two insulated cylinders (chimney) are stood up vertically to exhaust inside moist air passively. Then, to make clearly the operation performance of the house, the drying tests for the proof examination were conducted nineteen times at first test site in Ashoro where is located east-central part of Hokkaido, Japan. As a result of the drying test for the proof examination, it was made clear that the all weather-type solar Ogako drying house is practically useful as a supplementary apparatus to produce the dried Ogako, and consequently to suppress CO2 exhaustion.
