Astragalus adscendens extract shows antidiabetic effects through controlling oxidative stress,inflammation and apoptosis in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats

Objective:To assess the effect of oral treatment of methanolic extract of the aerial parts of Astragalus adscendens in streptozotocin-induced diabetic ***:In order to induce diabetes,rats intraperitoneally received streptozotocin at 65 mg/*** adult male Wistar rats were allocated into six groups(10 rats per each)including the healthy control group,the diabetic group as well as the diabetic group treated with Astragalus adscendens methanolic extract at 50,100,and 200 mg/kg per day or glibenclamide(0.6 mg/kg/day)for 28 *** effects of Astragalus adscendens methanolic extract on the levels of glucose,insulin,alanine aminotransferase,alkaline phosphatase,aspartate aminotransferase,bilirubin,creatinine,urea,uric acid,total protein,albumin,triglyceride,cholesterol,α-amylase,oxidant/antioxidant enzymes,and inflammatory cytokines were *** time-PCR was also used for measuring the gene expression of caspase-3,Bcl2,and ***:The levels of glucose,cholesterol,triglyceride,creatinine,urea,uric acid,alanine aminotransferase,aspartate aminotransferase,alkaline phosphatase,bilirubin,and malondialdehyde considerably declined(P<0.001)in diabetic rats after treatment with Astragalus adscendens methanolic extract especially at a dose of 200 mg/*** addition,treatment with Astragalus adscendens methanolic extract noticeably increased the level of insulin,total protein,and albumin as well as improved the activities of catalase,glutathione peroxidase,and superoxide dismutase,as well as the expression levels of TNF-α,IL-1β,caspase-3,Bcl2 and Bax(P<0.001)compared to the diabetic control *** extract also inhibitedα-amylase in a dose-dependent manner with an IC_(50)value of 19.6μg/***:Astragalus adscendens methanolic extract shows potent antidiabetic,anti-inflammatory,anti-apoptotic,and antioxidant effects in diabetic ***,more studies are needed to verify the underlying mechanism of the effect of this plant extract and test its effica

Ultrasensitive plasmonic sensor based on MDM waveguide containing Persian Orsi window cavities for refractive index and blood plasma sensing

We developed a plasmonic refractive index（RI） with a metal-dielectric-metal（MDM） structure that utilizes two Persian Orsi windows-like separated cavities with a high figure of merit（FoM） and ultrasensitivity. The simulated and optimized Ag-air-Ag MDM sensor for surface plasmon resonance（SPR） offers high RI sensitivity（SRI） and the ability to detect blood plasma concentration（BPC）. The results verified that structural parameters have an effect on S;RI;, full width at half maximum（FWHM）, FoM, sensitivity of blood plasma（S;p;） for right and left peaks, whose values are 1 345.45 nm·RIU;-1;, 32 nm, 42.04 RIU;-1;, 0.26 and 0.19 nm·L·g;-1;, respectively. The proposed design opens a new horizon in sensor development.

Evolution of seasonal land surface temperature trend in pond-breeding newt (Neurergus derjugini) in western Iran and eastern Iraq

Background Temperature, as one of the effective environmental stimuli in many aspects of species life and ecosystems, can affect amphibians in many ways. Knowing and predicting temperature change and its possible effects on the habitat suitability and movements of amphibians have led many researchers to use climate change scenarios and species distribution models(SDMs). One of the important remote-sensing products that received less attention of conservation biologists is the land surface temperature(LST). Due to the small difference between LST and air temperature, this component can be used to investigate and monitor the daily and seasonal changes of habitats. This study aims to investigate the seasonal trend of LST in the habitat suitability and connectivity of the critically endangered newt(Neurergus derjugini) in its small distribution range, using the MODIS LST time series(2003 to 2021) and with the help of SDMs, Mann–Kendall(MK) and Pettitt non-parametric *** In the last decade, the increasing trend of LST versus its decreasing trends is obvious. Based on MK and Pettitt tests, in the winter and spring, with the decrease in latitude of 35.45° and increase in longitude of 46.14°, the core populations which are located in the southeast have experienced an increase in temperature. Considering the period time of breeding and overwintering, the continuity of winter and spring can be effective on the survival of adult newts as well as larvae in the microclimate. Linkages with the highest current flow between core populations in the winter and summer are the most likely to be vulnerable. At the level of habitat, the increase in LST is proportional to the trend of thermal landscape changes, and all seasons have had an increase in LST, but in winter and summer, the largest area of the habitat has been involved. By continuing the current trend, many high-altitude southern habitats in Iran will be endangered, and the species will be at risk of local extinction.

Pediatric palliative care for children with cancer:a concept analysis using Rodgers’evolutionary approach

Background Providing access to pediatric palliative care(PPC)for children living with a serious illness,such as cancer,is of critical importance,although this specialized intervention,as a novel concept,still seems vague and *** present study analyzed the concept of PPC for children with *** Rodgers'evolutionary method was employed for the concept *** on PPC,particularly those for children suffering from cancer,published between 2010 and 2021 were searched in valid academic research *** inclusion criteria for the full-text articles were based on the characteristics,antecedents,and consequences of PPC for children with *** In total,19 relevant articles were selected and then reviewed and analyzed after applying the inclusion criteria and the final *** analysis of the concept of PPC for children affected with cancer revealed four characteristics,including"PPC as holistic and integrated care","PPC as patient-and family-centered care","PPC as early-start continuous care",and"PPC as interdisciplinary and team-based care".Some effective factors could also act as antecedents for this concept,i.e.,health care providers'training and expertise as well as human resources and ***,improved quality of life,symptom reduction,and coordination between patient care and family support were among the PPC consequences for such *** The study results demonstrated that delivering PPC to children with cancer demanded a comprehensive view of its various ***,numerous factors need to be delineated for its accurate and complete implementation.

Evaluation of the stability of terraced slopes in clayey gravel soil using a novel numerical technique

Conventional geotechnical software limits the use of the strength reduction method(SRM)based on the Mohr–Coulomb failure criterion to analyze the slope safety factor(SF).The use of this constitutive model is impractical for predicting the behavior of all soil *** the present study,an innovative numerical technique based on SRM was developed to determine SF using the finite element method and considering the extended Cam–clay constitutive model for clayey gravel soil as opposed to the Mohr–Coulomb *** this regard,a novel user subroutine code was employed in ABAQUS to reduce the stabilizing forces to determine the failure surfaces and resist and drive shear stresses on a *** validating the proposed technique,it was employed to investigate the performance of terraced slopes in the context of a case *** impacts of geometric parameters and different water table elevations on the SF were *** results indicated that an increase in the upper and lower slope heights led to a decrease in SF,and a slight increase in the horizontal offset led to an increase in the ***,when the water table elevation was lower than the toe of the terraced slope,the SF increased because of the increase in the uplift force as a resistant component.

Experimental investigation and flow analysis of clear-water scour around pier and abutment in proximity

Local scour around bridge piers and abutments is one of the most significant causes of bridge *** a plethora of studies on scour around individual bridge piers or abutments,few studies have focused on the joint impact of a pier and an abutment in proximity to one another on *** study conducted laboratory experiments and flow analyses to examine the interaction of piers and abutments and their effect on clear-water *** experiments were conducted in a rectangular laboratory *** included 18 main tests(with a combination of different types of piers and abutments)and five control tests(with individual piers or abutments).Three pier types(a rectangular pier with a rounded edge,a group of three cylindrical piers,and a single cylindrical pier)and two abutment types(a wingewall abutment and a semicircular abutment)were *** acoustic Doppler velocimeter was used to measure the three-dimensional flow velocity for analyses of streamline,velocity magnitude,vertical velocity,and bed shear *** results showed that the velocity near the pier and abutment increased by up to 80%.The maximum scour depth around the abutment increased by up to 19%.In contrast,the maximum scour depth around the pier increased significantly by up to l71%.The presence of the pier in the vicinity of the abutment led to an increase in the scour hole volume by up to 87%relative to the case with a solitary *** equations were also derived to accurately estimate the maximum scour depth at the pier adjacent to the abutment.

L-arginine alleviates postmenopausal complications in female rats by stimulating ovarian dopamine beta hydroxylase

Objective:To evaluate the levels of estrogen,albumin and gonadotropins(luteinizing hormone,follicle-stimulating hormone)as well as the activity of dopamine beta hydroxylase(DAβH)in aged female rats treated with nitric oxide precursor L-arginine and neuronal nitric oxide synthase antagonist ***:A total of 224 Wistar rats(36 weeks old,weighing 250 g)based on a random sampling were divided into the control and experimental groups after Pap smear *** control group received only saline(1 mL/kg)intraperitoneally(i.p.).The experiential groups were treated with L-arginine(5,25 and 50 mg/kg,i.p.)and L-NAME(5 and 25 mg/kg,i.p.)for 3 to 21 days,once a *** samples were taken from the rats and the levels of estrogen and albumin and gonadotropins in the serum were monitored by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay kit,and the ovaries were examined immunohistopathologically for DAβH ***:L-arginine(5 mg/kg)significantly increased estrogen level(P<0.05),which was associated with DAβH activation in the ovaries.L-NAME reduced this effect when administered prior to L-arginine dose.L-arginine caused no significant change in the levels of luteinizing hormone and follicle-stimulating *** for the lowest dose of L-arginine in the shortest period,albumin levels significantly decreased in other treatments compared to the control group(P<0.05).Conclusions:L-arginine is likely to reduce postmenopausal problems due to an increased nitric oxide level.
