Gender differences of lower urinary tract symptoms in older Chinese Americans

Objective To describe whether or not there are gender differences in lower urinary tract symptoms(LUTS)prevalence and risk factors in community-dwelling older Chinese *** We performed a secondary analysis of a prospective cross-sectional population-based survey of Chinese Americans aged 60 years and older between January 2011 and December 2013 in English,Mandarin,Cantonese,Taishanese,or Teochew.A clinical review of systems was used to assess LUTS,which included urinary frequency,urgency,burning and/or pain,blood in urine,and urinary *** Of the total 3157 people queried,42%were men and 58%were *** men reported LUTS compared to women(32.9%vs.28.6%,p=0.01).In a multivariable analysis,female gender(adjusted odds ratio[aOR]0.60,95%confidence interval[CI]0.49-0.73),being married(aOR 0.79,95%CI 0.65-0.97),and smoking(aOR 0.66,95%CI 0.49-0.88)were found to be protective,while traditional Chinese medicine use(aOR 1.51,95%CI 1.28-1.78),heart disease(aOR 1.54,95%CI 1.24-1.91),and anxiety(aOR 1.69,95%CI 1.25-2.28)were most strongly associated with increased odds of *** examining genders separately,being married was found to be protective only in ***,unique factors found in men were hypertension,heart disease,and practice of Tai *** In this large population-based study,LUTS were more prevalent in older Chinese American men than *** also found gender-specific factors that influenced the odds of reporting LUTS;however,traditional Chinese medicine use was the only factor that was shared by both *** longitudinal investigations are needed to elucidate these underlying mechanisms to provide evidence-based and culture-specific guidelines for this rapidly growing population.

颗粒材料在自然界和工程应用中极为常见,深入理解并合理利用其流变性对于预测与减轻自然灾害以及描述多种工程材料力学性质至关重要.然而,现有研究仍未建立起颗粒之间摩擦特性与颗粒集合体宏观的力学特性之间的物理联系.本文利用离散单元法(DEM)考察了不同颗粒间摩擦系数对定压剪切条件下的颗粒材料的流变性的影响,试图建立基于粒间摩擦的颗粒流变学模型.本研究计算显示,增加颗粒之间的摩擦系数可以显著改变颗粒集合体的整体流变特性,增加颗粒系统的有效摩擦系数µeff,并减小定压剪切条件下的稳态固体体积分数ϕs.在此基础上,本报告提出用于描述不同粒间摩擦特性颗粒材料流变性的无量纲数M,并建立摩擦流变模型.同时考察了M和无量纲颗粒温度Θ之间的关系,分析了摩擦系数对于粒间作用力概率分布函数的影响.进一步延伸了传统的流变模型的应用范围,有助于建立更为普适的颗粒材料本构模型.

The lncRNA BORG: a novel inducer of TNBC metastasis, chemoresistance, and disease recurrence

Although greater than 90% of breast cancer-related mortality can be attributed to metastases, the molecular mechanisms underpinning the dissemination of primary breast tumor cells and their ability to establish malignant lesions in distant tissues remain incompletely understood. Genomic and transcriptomic analyses identified a class of transcripts called long noncoding RNA (lncRNA), which interact both directly and indirectly with key components of gene regulatory networks to alter cell proliferation, invasion, and metastasis. We identified a pro-metastatic lncRNA BMP/OP-Responsive Gene (BORG) whose aberrant expression promotes metastatic relapse by reactivating proliferative programs in dormant disseminated tumor cells (DTCs). BORG expression is broadly and strongly induced by environmental and chemotherapeutic stresses, a transcriptional response that facilitates the survival of DTCs. Transcriptomic reprogramming in response to BORG resulted in robust signaling via survival and viability pathways, as well as decreased activation of cell death pathways. As such, BORG expression acts as a (1) marker capable of predicting which breast cancer patients are predisposed to develop secondary metastatic lesions;and (2) unique therapeutic target to maximize chemosensitivity of DTCs. Here we review the molecular and cellular factors that contribute to the pathophysiological activities of BORG during its regulation of breast cancer metastasis, chemoresistance, and disease recurrence.

Dear Editor, Understanding how Kranz anatomy develops in C4 plants is a critical part of the current worldwide effort to transfer C4 photosynthesis into C3 plants, including rice. Recently, it was proposed that the Kranz architecture that supports C4 photosynthesis in maize leaves is an extension of the endodermal program, which is active in roots, stems, and petioles, and is ubiquitous in angiosperms （Slewinski et al., 2012; Slewinski, 2013）.

Outcome of Pediatric Cataract Surgery in Patients Who Have Undergone Bone Marrow Transplantation

Purpose: Bone marrow transplantation (BMT) and pre-treatment conditioning increases the risk of developing pediatric cataracts. We present the outcome of cataract surgery in children who have had BMT. Methods: We conducted a retrospective chart study with 15 BMT patients (28 eyes) who underwent cataract extraction between 2002 and 2012. Outcome measures include change in best corrected visual acuity (BCVA) and complications. Results: 7 (47%) patients had acute lymphoid leukemia, 3 (20%) had acute myeloid leukemia, 2 (13%) had myelodysplastic syndrome, 1 (7%) had Fanconi anemia, 1 (7%) had juvenile myelomonocytic leukemia, and 1 (7%) had adrenoleukodystrophy. Patients received BMT at a mean age of 3.9 ± 1.6 years. 12 (80%) patients received total body irradiation (TBI) and 3 of these 12 received cranial irradiation in addition to TBI;one (7%) received only cranial irradiation. Total body irradiation included head and eye exposure. Mean age of cataract surgery was 9.1 ± 2.3 years;mean follow-up was 55.9 ± 45.1 months. All cataracts were of posterior subcapsular subtype. Mean BCVA improved from 0.7 ± 0.4 logMAR to 0.3 ± 0.5 logMAR (p Conclusions: Children with history of BMT have a predisposition of developing posterior subcapsular cataracts and have a high rate of visually significant PCO if the posterior capsule is left intact at the time of cataract surgery.

Molecular Targeted Therapy of Hepatocellular Carcinoma

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is the fifth most common cancer and the third most common cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide. Despite decades of efforts by many investigators, systemic chemotherapy or hormonal therapy has notoriously failed to show an improvement in survival. With a median survival of 8 months, and 1- and 3-year survival rates of 20% and 5%, respectively, the effective treatment of HCC remains far from satisfactory. Better understanding of the pathogenesis of this disease, identification of molecular targets for therapeutic intervention and availability of promising molecularly targeted therapies may change this dismal picture. In this review we will focus on what is currently known about the molecular pathogenesis of HCC, and explore the currently available and future molecular based therapies targeting these pathways. Future research in this area will maximize clinical benefit while minimizing the toxicity and cost through utilization of novel targeted agents.
