Background In this study, we aimed to investigate the relationship between single-gender Korean references for non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (non-HDL-C) and metabolic syndrome (MetS) in childhood. Methods A total of 5742 Korean children aged 10–18 years who participated in a national survey were included. The sub-jects were classified into three groups based on single-gender non-HDL-C levels as follows: tg), 1.73 (1.08–1.79) for reduced high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and 1.73 (1.08–2.78) for MetS compared with males in the desirable non-HDL-C group after adjusting for covariates. Males in the high non-HDL-C group had ORs of 1.65 (1.14–2.41) for elevated blood pressure (BP), 6.21 (4.27–9.05) for elevated tg, and 3.29 (1.49–7.26) for MetS compared with males in the desirable non-HDL-C group. Females in the borderline high non-HDL-C group had ORs of 3.03 (2.43–3.76) for elevated tg, 1.63 (1.13–2.35) for reduced HDL-C, and 4.53 (2.47–8.31) for MetS compared with females in the desirable non-HDL-C group. Females in the high non-HDL-C group had ORs of 1.43 (1.00–2.04) for elevated BP, 6.36 (4.45–9.08) for elevated tg, and 7.64 (3.65–15.96) for MetS compared with females in the desirable non-HDL-C group. Conclusion Our results suggest that, in a Korean population, a non-HDL-C level of 120 mg/dL for males and 150 mg/dL for females is the threshold between borderline high and high risk for MetS.

Synthesis and Magnetic Properties of Nanoparticles of Fe-Co Alloys and Their Oxides Prepared by Chemical Vapor Condensation

Nanoparticles of Fe-Co alloys and their oxides with the particle size below 20 nm were prepared by chemical vapor condensation process. The pure Ar, Ar+1%O2, Ar+3%O2 and Ar+6%O2 were used as carrier gases, with iron carbonyl and cobalt carbonyl as the precursors. XRD patterns showed that Fe-Co metallic nanoparticles were synthesized by using pure Ar as carrier gas, and only metal oxides were obtained using Ar+(>3)%O2 as carrier gas. The HRTEM images and tg-DTA curves were used to study the core-shell structure of the different nanoparticles. The nanoparticles obtained in pure Ar consist of black core and light shell with thickness of 2~4 nm. However, in the particles obtained in Ar+6%02, the oxides core with visible lattice fringes are surrounded by thin shell.

In an effort to assess the reliability of satellite altimeter systems, the authors conduct a comparative analysis of sea level data that were collected from the TOPEX/POSEIDON (T/P) altimeter and 10 tide gauges (tg) near the satellite passing ground tracks. The analysis is made using datasets collected from marginal sea regions surrounding the Korean Peninsula at T/P cycles of 2 to 230, which correspond to October 1992 to December 1998. Proper treatment of tidal errors is a very critical step in data processing because the study area has very strong tide. When the T/P data are processed, the procedures of Park and Gamberoni (1995) are adapted to reduce errors associated with the tide. When the T/P data are processed in this way, the alias periods of M2, S2, and K1 constituents are found to be 62.1, 58.7, and 173 days repectively. The compatibility of the T/P and tg datasets are examined at various filtering periods. The results indicate that the low-frequency signals of the T/P data can be interpreted more safely with longer filtering periods (such as up to the maximum selected value of 200 days). When RMS errors for the 200-day low-pass filter period are compared with all 10 tidal stations, the values span the range of 2.8 to 6.7 cm. The results of a correlation analysis for this filtering period also show a strong agreement between the T/P and tg datasets across all stations investigated (e.g.,p- values consistently less than 0.001). Hence according to the analysis, the conclusion is made that the analysis of surface sea level using satellite altimeter data can be made safely with reasonably extended filtering periods such as 200 days.

In the production(as co-fuel or alone)of solid refuse fuel(SRF),knowledge about the characteristics of the raw materials is required for an ecofriendly and effective combustion *** are commonly produced by drying combustible waste and removing incombustible matter,resulting in a higher combustibility as compared to the original ***,the characteristics of SRFs may highly vary depending on where and from which materials they were ***,we investigated the characteristics of various SRFs using thermogravimetric analysis(tgA).As a tgA sample is commonly small,on the scale of milligrams,and,unlike homogeneous fuels,SRFs are heterogeneous,individual SRF samples analysed with this method may not represent the bulk material,and sample properties may vary significantly between ***,we further performed combustion experiments using a small-scale combustor and sample sizes from 1 to 10 *** optimise SRF combustor design and determine the SRF characteristics,proximate,elemental,heating value,tg,and differential thermogravimetric analyses were conducted,and weight losses and gas concentrations at different temperatures were measured upon *** lower heating values of the three analysed SRFs were 20,976,16,873,and 19,762 kJ/kg,and their Cl contents were 0.89,0.95,and 1.27 wt.%(legal criterion[Cl]tgA and small combustor experiments showed that complete weight loss was achieved below 500°***,CO was detected until 620°C.

The perovskite Cr-doped La0.6Sr0.4CrxFe1-xO3-δ （x=0.10, 0.20） oxides were synthesized via the citrate gel method. The perovskite forming of the Lao.6Sr0.4CrxFel-xO3-δ （x=0.10, 0.20） oxides were studied by ther- mogravimetric analysis （tg）, differential scanning calorimetry （DSC）, and X-ray diffraction （XRD）. Structural and chemical stability under H2-containing helium atmospheres of Lao.6Sro.4CrxFel-xO3-δ （x=0.10, 0.20） were investigated by tg and XRD. The sintering microstructures of the perovskite Lao.6Sr0.4Cr2Fel-xO3-δ （x--0.10, 0.20） ceramics were investigated by scanning electron microscopy （SEM）, and the electrical conduc- tivities of both oxide ceramics were also measured up to 900℃. The results demonstrated that the chemical stability of the Co-free ***.4CrxFe1-xO3-δ （x=0.10, 0.20） oxides was significantly improved compared to the Co-containing Lao.6Sr0.4C00.2Fe0.8O3-δ and Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3-δ oxides. The incorporation of Cr cations in the B-site of the pervoskite oxides resulted in the improved structural and chemical stability of the as-synthesized Lao.6Sr0.4CrxFe1-xO3-δ （x=0.10, 0.20） oxides.

Effects of operating parameters in the thermal gradient chemical vapor infiltration of propane such as thermal gradient, diffusion, infiltrations time, and concentration of propane were studied by focusing on the visualizations of the intrinsic effects of these parameters. A uniform deposition in the preform was obtained with a gradually increasing temperature along the gas flow. The uniformity of deposition through the preform got improved with increasing deposition time. Results of numerical modeling estimated the experimental data very well when the pre-exponential factor of the overall rate of carbon deposition from propane reported by Vaidyaraman[1] was multiplied by 4. The average density of a preform increased by about 3 times from 0.38 to 1.15 g/cm3 after 60 hr deposition with a thermal gradient under the conditions of 3% propane in nitrogen and 840 to 900 ℃.
