Purpose Children require 9-11 h sleep to ensure adequate growth and development by optimizing the efficiency of a number of biological systems,including the cardiovascular *** study aim was to determine whether short sleep duration(<9 h)is associated with elevated aortic arterial stiffness in children aged 9-11 years,independent of other lifestyle behav-iors,including physical activity,sedentary behaviour and dietary *** This cross-sectional study included 421 children(51%female)aged 9-11 *** arterial stiffness was measured using carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity(cfPWV),sleep duration,time spent sedentary,and moderate-vigorous physical activity were measured using wrist actigraphy,and dietary patterns using a food frequency ***-tions between short sleep duration and cfPWV were examined using mixed effects *** There was a positive[unadjusted]association between short sleep duration and cfPWV(β=0.245,95%CI 0.093-0.396).This association persisted following adjustment for demographic factors and was strengthened following adjustment for lifestyle behaviors(β=0.331,95%CI 0.109-0.553).Conclusions Short sleepers(<9 h)had a clinically meaningful elevated aortic arterial stiffness in comparison to those sleeping the recommended daily 9-11 *** duration may be important for cardiovascular health independent of other lifestyle behaviors.

Dynamic behavior of stormwater quality parameters in South Texas

To control water impairment in urban storm- water, it is important to evaluate changing patterns of water quality parameters in stormwater runoff. Thus, the authors performed a series of experiments to investigate the dynamics of common water parameters during storm events in semi-arid areas, with multiple samples collected and analyzed in field stormwater applications. At this field monitoring site within McAuliffe Park, McAllen, Texas, in the United States, a storm event increased the concentra- tions of Escherichia coli （E. coli）, but this event represented a decreasing trend over the entire event period. Besides, peak intensity of different pollutants in the stormwater runoff occurred at different times other than at any peak flows, representing a complexity of the temporal and spatial measurements. Multi-sample per- event approaches recommended based on the complexity of the hydrograph and different peak intensity times of pollutants. In addition, high bacteria and total suspended solids （TSS） concentrations in the initial stage of the storm event should be considered when designing Best Manage- ment Practices （BMPs） and Low Impact Developments （LIDs）. New strategies and solutions for addressing ecohydrological challenges should be proposed to avoid collateral damages to their both common wealth in ecosystems and human well-beings.

Arabidopsis thaliana plants are less resistant to attack by the generalist lepidopteran herbivore Trichoplusia ni when plants and herbivores are entrained to opposite, versus identical diurnal cycles and tested under constant conditions. This effect is associated with circadian fluctuations in levels of jasmonic acid, the transcription factor MYC2, and glucosinolate contents in leaves. We tested whether a similar effect could be observed in a different plant-herbivore system： the wild tobacco Nicotiana attenuata and its co-evolved specialist herbivore, Manduca sexta. We measured larval growth on plants under both constant and diurnal conditions following identical or opposite entrainment, profiled the metabolome of attacked leaf tissue, quantified specific metabolites known to reduce M. sexta growth, and monitored A/I. sexta feeding activity under all experimental conditions. Entrainment did not consistently affect NI. sexta growth or plant defense induction. However, both were reduced under constant dark conditions,as was M. sexta feeding activity. Our data indicate that the response induced by NI. sexta in N. attenuata is robust to diurnal cues and independent of plant or herbivore entrain- ment. We propose that while the patterns of constitutive or general damage-induced defense may undergo circadian fluctuation, the orchestration of specific induced responses is more complex.

Halide perovskites,such as methylammonium lead halide perovskites(MAPbX3,X=I,Br,and Cl),are emerging as promising candidates for a wide range of optoelectronic applications,including solar cells,light-emitting diodes,and photodetectors,due to their superior optoelectronic ***-inorganic lead halide perovskites CsPbX3 are attracting a lot of attention because replacing the organic cations with Cs+enhances the stability,and its halide-mixing derivatives offer broad bandgap tunability covering nearly the entire visible ***,there is evidence suggesting that the optical properties of mixed-halide perovskites are influenced by phase segregation under external stimuli,especially illumination,which may negatively impact the performance of optoelectronic *** is reported that the mixed-halide perovskites in forms of thin films and nanocrystals are segregated into a low-bandgap I-rich phase and a high-bandgap Br-rich ***,we present a critical review on the synthesis and basic properties of all-inorganic perovskites,phase-segregation phenomena,plausible mechanisms,and methods to mitigate phase segregation,providing insights on advancing mixed-halide perovskite optoelectronics with reliable performance.

报道了一种粘性末端的限制性酶切片段的直接克隆和测序的方法.对限制性酶切片段的粘性末端先用T4DNA聚合酶处理,变为平末端,然后用TaqTMDNA聚合酶在其3′末端加上A腺苷,即可利用T/A克隆载体进行直接克隆测序.利用这种简单而快速的方法,对2个RFLP探针Psr680的限制性酶切片段 1.65kb和0.65kb 进行了测序,表明这种方法可以替代利用相应载体进行相应酶切等处理的粘性末端连接克隆测序的方法.

Comparative outcomes of the pathogen in cultured jones tubes used in lacrimal bypass surgery according to follow up periods

AIM:To evaluate the pathogens in cultured jones tubes used in lacrimal bypass surgery according to the postoperative periods and to obtain data for the prevention of infection of functional lacrimal stent ***:Totally 71 patients(81 eyes)who underwent the removal of jones tubes were enrolled in *** the removed jones tubes were cultured for bacterial and fungal identification and tested for bacterial antibiotic *** results were analyzed according to the duration of the inserted jones tube after lacrimal bypass ***:Of the 81 eyes,bacteria were isolated from 69 eyes(85.2%)and fungi from 6 eyes(7.4%).Among 69 eyes,40.6% showed Staphylococcus aureus(***),11.6% were Pseudomonas aeruginosa(***).Gram-positive bacteria were isolated more than Gramnegative bacteria,but Gram-negative bacteria showed a higher incidence in the jones tube implanted for over 10y(P=0.035).The antibiotic sensitivity test showed that 46.4% of *** were resistant to *** terms of antibiotics commonly used in ocular clinical practice,vancomycin was sensitive to *** and Streptococcus pneumoniae(***),amikacin responded to *** and Proteus mirabilis(***).Trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole(TMP/SMX)was all sensitive to ***,*** and *** except ***:*** is the most commonly found organism in the jones tube after lacrimal bypass surgery,and 46.4% of them are methicillin-resistant ***(MRSA),sensitive to ***,*** responded with amikacin is dominantly detected in the jones tubes implanted for more than 10y.

The first Southern Ocean Observing System （SOOS） Asian Workshop was successfully held in Shanghai, China in May 2013, attracting over 40 participants from six Asian nations and widening exposure to the objectives and plans of SOOS. The workshop was organized to clarify Asian research activities currently taking place in the Southern Ocean and to discuss, amongst other items, the potential for collaborative efforts with and between Asian countries in $OOS-related activities. The workshop was an important mechanism to initiate discussion, understanding and collaborative avenues in the Asian domain of SOOS beyond current established eflbrts. Here we present some of the major outcomes of the workshop covering the principle themes of SOOS and attempt to provide a way forward to achieve a more integrated research community, enhance data collection and quality, and guide scientific strategy in the Southern Ocean.

Optical anisotropy,which is an intrinsic property of many materials,originates from the structural arrangement of molecular structures,and to date,various polarization-sensitive imaging(PSI)methods have been developed to investigate the nature of anisotropic *** particular,the recently developed tomographic PSI technologies enable the investigation of anisotropic materials through volumetric mappings of the anisotropy distribution of these ***,these reported methods mostly operate on a single scattering model,and are thus not suitable for three-dimensional(3D)PSI imaging of multiple scattering ***,we present a novel reference-free 3D polarization-sensitive computational imaging technique—polarization-sensitive intensity diffraction tomography(PS-IDT)—that enables the reconstruction of 3D anisotropy distribution of both weakly and multiple scattering specimens from multiple intensity-only measurements.A 3D anisotropic object is illuminated by circularly polarized plane waves at various illumination angles to encode the isotropic and anisotropic structural information into 2D intensity *** information are then recorded separately through two orthogonal analyzer states,and a 3D jones matrix is iteratively reconstructed based on the vectorial multi-slice beam propagation model and gradient descent *** demonstrate the 3D anisotropy imaging capabilities of PS-IDT by presenting 3D anisotropy maps of various samples,including potato starch granules and tardigrade.
