Delayed-onset endophthalmitis associated with Achromobacter species developed in acute form several months after cataract surgery:Three case reports

BACKGROUND Achromobacter species-associated endophthalmitis is rare and may present as either acute or chronic postoperative ***-onset Achromobacter species endophthalmitis appearing in acute presentation that develops more than several months after cataract surgery is very *** lens(IOL)removal is commonly recommended to treat Achromobacter species endophthalmitis,which is based on previous ***,we report the results of surgery without IOL removal when treating patients with delayed-onset postoperative Achromobacter species endophthalmitis that developed in an acute *** SUMMARY Three patients visited our ophthalmology clinic due to visual impairment that began 2-3 d *** had undergone cataract surgery 5-18 mo *** visual acuity of the diseased eye was between counting fingers at 30 cm to non-light *** showed conjunctival injection,inflammation in the anterior chamber(cell reaction 4+)and hypopyon *** patients were diagnosed with infectious endophthalmitis and immediately underwent pars plana vitrectomy,anterior chamber irrigation and intravitreal injection of ceftazidime and *** fluid infusion,a vitreous specimen was obtained. In all cases, the IOLs were not removed. Achromobacter species was detected on vitreousspecimen culture. After surgery, the vitreous opacity decreased gradually and there was littleretinal damage. At 1 mo after treatment, the best-corrected visual acuity had improved to 20/50and 20/*** onset postoperative endophthalmitis caused by Achromobacter species can appear in anacute form. All patients responded well to early vitrectomy and administration of empiricalantibiotics including ceftazidime. There was no need for IOL removal during surgery.

Semiconductor microdisk lasers have great potential as low-threshold,high-speed,and small-form-factor light sources required for photonic integrated circuits because of their high-Q factors associated with long-lived whispering gallery modes(WGMs).Despite these advantages,the rotational symmetry of the disk shape restricts practical applications of the photonic devices because of their isotropic emission,which lacks directionality in far-field emission and difficulty in free-space out *** overcome this problem,deformation of the disk cavity has been mainly ***,the approach cannot avoid significant Q degradation owing to the broken rotational ***,we first report a deformed shape microcavity laser based on transformation optics,which exploits WGMs free from Q *** deformed cavity laser was realized by a spatially varying distribution of deep-sub-wavelength-scale(60 nm diameter)nanoholes in an InGaAsP-based multi-quantum-well *** lasing threshold of our laser is one-third of that of the same shaped homogeneous laser and quite similar to that of a homogeneous microdisk *** results mean that Q spoiling caused by the boundary shape deformation is recovered by spatially varying nanohole density distribution designed by transformation optics and effective medium approximation.

Complication after nipple-areolar complex tattooing performed by a non-medical person:A case report

BACKGROUND Compared to earlier,there has been an increase in the tattoo procedures for cosmetic purposes;and there has also been an increase in the tattoo procedures performed by non-medical *** South Korea,only tattoos performed by a doctor are considered legal;however,there is still some debate over whether tattoo procedures performed by non-healthcare providers should be considered *** SUMMARY A 28-year-old woman visited our hospital with pain in both nipples and heat sensation over the last 4 *** had a history of a nipple tattoo performed by an unlicensed *** bleeding was noted in both areolar areas,and the exudate mixed with pus and orange color ink was *** medication and tulle with foam dressing were performed under the impression of cellulitis and allergic *** 4 wk,nipples remained dark brown in color,resulting in a color mismatch between the nipple and orange-colored *** size of the areola was also found to be distinctly asymmetrical after *** complication may have been caused by the use of illegal ink or unsanitary procedures,or a problem may have occurred in the post-tattoo management *** Doctors use approved ink,aseptic procedure and appropriate postoperative care,and appropriate management can be performed in case of complications.

Emerging nanoformulation strategies for phytocompounds and applications from drug delivery to phototherapy to imaging

Over thousands of years,natural bioactive compounds derived from plants(bioactive phytocompounds,BPCs)have been used worldwide to address human health ***,they are a significant resource for drug discovery in the development of modern *** many BPCs have promising biological activities,most of them cannot be effectively utilized in drugs for therapeutic applications because of their inherent limitations of low solubility,structural instability,short half-life,poor bioavailability,and non-specific distribution to *** have utilized emerging nanoformulation(NF)technologies to overcome these limitations as they have demonstrated great potential to improve the solubility,stability,and pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic characteristics of *** review exemplifies NF strategies for resolving the issues associated with BPCs and summarizes recent advances in their preclinical and clinical applications for imaging and *** review also highlights how innovative NF technologies play a leading role in next-generation BPC-based drug development for extended therapeutic ***,this review discusses the opportunities to take BPCs with meaningful clinical impact from bench to bedside and extend the patent life of BPC-based medicines with new formulations or application to new adjacent diseases beyond the primary drug indications.

Fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics of spiral coiled tube: Effects of Reynolds number and curvature ratio

Numerical analysis was performed to investigate flow and heat transfer characteristics in spiral coiled tube heat exchanger. Radius of curvature of the spiral coiled tube was gradually increased as total rotating angle reached 12π. As the varying radius of curvature became a dominant flow parameter, three-dimensional flow analysis was performed to this flow together with different Reynolds numbers while constant wall heat flux condition was set in thermal field. From the analysis, centrifugal force due to curvature effect is found to have significant role in behavior of pressure drop and heat transfer. The centrifugal force enhances pressure drop and heat transfer to have generally higher values in the spiral coiled tube than those in the straight tube. Even then, friction factor and Nusselt number are found to follow the proportionality with square root of the Dean number. Individual effect of flow parameters of Reynolds number and curvature ratio was investigated and effect of Reynolds number is found to be stronger than that of curvature effect.

A rational regulation of the solar water splitting reaction pathway by adjusting the surface composition and phase structure of catalysts is a substantial approach to ameliorate the sluggish reaction kinetics and improve the energy conversion *** this study,we demonstrate a nanocrystalline iron pyrophosphate(Fe_(4)(P_(2)O_(7))_(3),FePy)-regulated hybrid overlayer with amorphous iron phosphate(FePO_(4),FePi)on the surface of metal oxide nanostructure with boosted photoelectrochemical(PEC)water *** manipulating the facile electrochemical surface treatment followed by the phosphating process,nanocrystalline FePy is localized in the FePi amorphous overlayer to form a heterogeneous hybrid *** FePy-regulated hybrid overlayer(FePy@FePi)results in significantly enhanced PEC performance with long-term *** with the homogeneous FePi amorphous overlayer,FePy@FePi can improve the charge transfer efficiency more significantly,from 60% of FePi to 79%of FePy@*** density-functional theory calculations reveal that the coexistence of FePi and FePy phases on the surface of metal oxide results in much better oxygen evolution reaction kinetics,where the FePi was found to have a typical down-hill reaction for the conversion from OH*to O_(2),while FePy has a low free energy for the formation of OH*.

Characteristics of radiation and convection heat transfer in indirect near-infrared-ray heating chamber

Numerical study was performed to evaluate the characteristics of combined heat transfer of radiation,conduction and convection in indirect near infrared ray (NIR) heating *** effects of important design parameters such as the shape of heat absorbing cylinder and heat releasing fin on the pressure drop and heat transfer coefficient were analyzed with different Reynolds *** Reynolds numbers were varied from 103 to 3×106,which was defined based on the hydraulic diameter of the heat absorbing *** were performed to obtain the inner and outer flow and the temperature distributions in the heat absorbing cylinder and the rates of radiation heat transfer and convection heat *** the Reynolds number increases,the convection heat transfer rate is increased while the radiation heat transfer rate is *** average convection heat transfer rate follows a power rule of the Reynolds *** of three-dimensional heat releasing fin to the outside of the heat absorbing cylinder enhances the convection heat transfer.

Aggregation-induced emission luminogens for organic light-emitting diodes with a single-component emitting layer

Organic light-emitting diodes(OLEDs)have garnered increasing attention as a promising candidate for application in next-generation displays and solid-state lighting *** doping technique commonly used to fabricate light-emitting layers(EMLs)of OLEDs disperses the emitting material in a host matrix to mitigate aggregation-induced quenching(ACQ).Alternatively,owing to their high efficiency and ease of manufacture,nondoped OLEDs have been developed as a substitute for doped *** fabricating nondoped OLEDs,it is essential to suppress the ACQ effect in the EML and efficiently utilize the generated excitons for radiative *** the discovery of aggregation-induced emission(AIE)by Tang et al.,significant work has been done to improve the stability and efficiency of nondoped OLEDs based on fluorescent AIE luminogens(AIEgens).Fluorescent AIEgens,synthesized using various molecular frameworks,such as silole,tetra/triphenylethylene,tetraphenylpyrazine,and tetraphenylbenzene,exhibit high photoluminescence quantum yields in the solid ***,many studies have reported that fluorescent AIEgen-based OLEDs have excellent external quantum efficiency and exhibit emission at various wavelengths,including deep-blue/blue/green *** the development of fluorescent AIEgens,delayed fluorescent AIEgens with efficient triplet utilization through reverse intersystem crossing and AIE properties have been adopted as ideal emitters and used in nondoped *** review systematically discusses and summarizes recent reports on the development of AIEgens for nondoped OLEDs by grouping them into fluorescent and delayed fluorescent *** purpose of this review is to provide deep insights into the design of novel AIEgens for high-performance nondoped OLEDs.
