Comparison of numerical codes for coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical simulations of fractured media

Geo-energy and geo-engineering applications,such as improved oil recovery(IOR),geologic carbon storage,and enhanced geothermal systems(EGSs),involve coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical(THM)processes that result from fluid injection and *** some cases,reservoirs are highly fractured and the geomechanical response is controlled by ***,fractures should explicitly be included into numerical models to realistically simulate the THM responses of the *** this study,we perform coupled THM numerical simulations of water injection into naturally fractured reservoirs(NFRs)using CODE_BRIGHT and TOUGH-UDEC ***_BRIGHT is a finite element method(FEM)code that performs fully coupled THM analysis in geological media and TOUGH-UDEC sequentially solves coupled THM processes by combining a finite volume method(FVM)code that solves nonisothermal multiphase flow(TOUGH2)with a distinct element method(DEM)code that solves the mechanical problem(UDEC).First,we validate the two codes against a semi-analytical solution for water injection into a single deformable fracture considering variable permeability based on the cubic ***,we compare simulation results of the two codes in an idealized conceptual model that includes one horizontal fracture and in a more realistic model with multiple *** code models fractures *** calculates fracture deformation from the fracture normal and shear stiffnesses,while CODE_BRIGHT treats fractures as equivalent porous media and uses the equivalent Young’s modulus and Poisson’s ratio of the ***,we obtain comparable results of pressure,temperature,stress and displacement distributions and evolutions for the single horizontal fracture *** some similarities,the two codes provide increasingly different results as model complexity *** differences highlight the challenging task of accurately modeling coupled THM processes in fractured media given their high nonlineari

Efficacy and safety of newly developed cross-linked dextran gel injection for glans penis augmentation with a novel technique

There is no safe and effective standard method for glans penis augmentation. Furthermore, there has been scant research on glans penis augmentation due to a poor understanding of glans anatomy, technical difficulty, and a lack of suitable substances for augmentation. Cross-linked dextran gel is a newly developed filler for soft-tissue augmentation. We evaluated the efficacy and safety of using a novel technique to inject cross-linked dextran gel for glans penis augmentation during a 24-week follow-up study. This prospective, single-arm, multicenter study enrolled twenty healthy adult men who underwent glans penis augmentation between June and August 2013. Cross-linked dextran gel was injected into the glans penis using a simple and easy technique. The sizes of the glans penis and individual satisfaction were assessed. Any adverse event was also reported. A total of 18 individuals were analyzed; two of them were lost to follow-up. The mean procedure time and injected volume were about 30 rain and 6.6 ＋- 0.9 ml, respectively. The mean surface areas of the glans at baseline and 24 weeks were 20.0 _＋ 3.5 cm2 and 33.6 -＋ 5.4 cm2, respectively, representing a mean increase of 68.7% _＋ 14.0% （P 〈 0.001）. Sixteen individuals （88.9%） were satisfied with the outcomes, and none were dissatisfied. There were no serious adverse events during the study. Cross-linked dextran gel injection for glans penis augmentation was easy and showed a significant augmentative effect on the glans penis, good durability, and was well tolerated without serious adverse events. Therefore, cross-linked dextran gel injection may be an effective, new technique for glans penis augmentation.

The isolation of high-grade （i.e. high-pluripotency） human induced pluripotent stem cells （hiPSCs） is a decisive factor for enhancing the purity of hiPSC populations or differentiation efficiency. A non-invasive imaging system that can monitor microRNA （miRNA） expression provides a useful tool to identify and analyze specific cell populations. However, previous studies on the monitoring/isolation of hiPSCs by miRNA expression have limited hiPSCs＇ differentiation system owing to long-term incubation with miRNA imaging probe-nanocarriers. Therefore, we focused on monitoring high-grade hiPSCs without influencing the pluripotency of hiPSCs. We reduced nanoparticle transfection time, because hiPSCs are prone to spontaneous differentiation under external factors during incubation. The fluorescent nanoswitch （＂ON＂ with target miRNA）, which can be applied for either imaging or sorting specific cells by fluorescence signals, contains an miRNA imaging probe （miP） and a PEI-PEG nanoparticle （miP-P）. Consequently, this nanoswitch can sense various endogenous target miRNAs within 30 min in vitro, and demonstrates strong potential for not only imaging but also sorting pluripotent hiPSCs without affecting pluripotency. Moreover, miP-P-treated hiPSCs differentiate well into endothelial cells, indicating that miP-P does not alter the pluripotency of hiPSCs. We envisage that this miRNA imaging system could be valuable for identifying and sorting high-grade hiPSCs for improved practical applications.

Fault area estimation using traveling wave for wide area protection

As the increasing number of Phasor Measurement Units(PMUs) are deployed, wide area protection in power systems has been gaining interest. In particular, fault detection, fault classification and fault area estimation are essential to reduce the damage of faults, and even prevent catastrophic cascades of failures. In this paper, we present a scheme for fault area estimation using PMUs and traveling wave theory. The purpose of this paper is to formulate a scheme for fault area estimation by calculating the approximate fault location based on traveling wave *** research has targeted at reliable operation of wide transmission system through the estimation of fault *** verify the suggested scheme, the various simulations are performed in practical Korean power transmission *** simulation results show that the proposed scheme has a good performance with high accuracy for estimating fault area.

Currently, sixty-five original sprinkle drug products are available in various dosage forms including tablets, powders, granules, immediate-release capsules, extended-release capsules, delayed-release capsules, and multiparticulate drug delivery systems. By sprinkling on soft food vehicles, these products provide dosing flexibility and convenience of administration, which potentially improve the compliance of patients with *** to these advantages, the growth of sprinkle products picked up since the 1990s, and several regulatory issues regarding this dosage form have been raised and *** this article, the types of sprinkle formulations were discussed by dividing them into seven categories, and the commercial products were summarized in terms of the drug substance, pharmaceutical excipients, storage conditions and administration methods. In addition, several US Food and Drug Administration guidelines related to the regulatory issues of sprinkle formulations were reviewed, which led to the conclusion that the future development of this promising dosage form demands integrated guidance for industry rather than scattered information in various documents.

Effect of Nucleases on the Cellular Internalization of Fluorescent Labeled DNA-Functionalized Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

Nuclease effects on the cell internalization of single-walled carbon nanotubes(SWNTs)functionalized with fluorescent-labeled DNA in serum containing cell growth media were *** Cy3-labeled DNA-functionalized SWNT conjugates(Cy3DNA-SWNTs)were incubated with HeLa cells in a fatal bovine serum(FBS)medium,a high fl uorescence intensity was obtained from the cells,indicative for the high level inclusion of ***,the fluorescence intensity was remarkably reduced if Cy3DNA-SWNTs were incubated with cells in the FBS-free *** systematic control experiments revealed that Cy3 dye molecules were released from Cy3DNA-SWNT conjugates by nuclease,and the free Cy3 dyes penetrate into HeLa cell with high *** the actual amounts of SWNTs internalized in the cells were almost identical for both cells incubated in the FBS-present and FBS-absent media according to the Raman measurements,one should be cautious to determine the degree of SWNT internalization based on the fl uorescence intensities especially when the coloring dye molecules were linked to oligonucleotides in nuclease containing media.

Development of a variable rate applicator for uniform fertilizer spreading

Environmental impact and economic concerns have driven a variable rate technology(VRT).Spinner spreaders were mainly used for granular fertilizer application since they are simple in design,inexpensive,and can cover large ***,the spreader was not adequate for VRT because uniformity changes drastically while varying application ***,the purpose of this study was to develop a variable rate applicator with uniform spreading patterns.A commercial spreader was modified with a controller and electric actuators for controlling fertilizer discharge directions and *** was established to determine the optimum discharge direction according to the fertilizer application *** uniformity of spreading patterns in accordance with the spread amount per set unit area was evaluated by the statistical coefficient of variation(CV)lower than 15%is assumed to prevent damage to the *** results showed that CVs were 8%,9%,and 8%,respectively,for a tractor in race track mode(adjacent passes in same direction of travel)at 200 kg/hm^(2),300 kg/hm^(2),and 400 kg/hm^(2).This indicates that the fertilizer was spread uniformly,while the coefficient of variation was 12%at 200 kg/hm^(2) in back and forth mode(adjacent passes in the opposite direction of travel).Overall,the results suggest that the race track mode is suitable for operation of a tractor to ensure uniform spreading of fertilizer when applying at variable *** future goal is to establish a system for automatic variable rate application according to location in connection with soil analysis and geographic information systems.

The role of additional ternary alloying elements on the performance of stationary TiFe-based hydrogen storage alloys was investigated based on first-principles density functional theory *** a basic step for examinations,the site preference of each alloying element in the stoichiometric and nonstoichiometric B2TiFe compounds was clarified considering possible antisite *** on the revealed site preference,the effect of various possible ternary elements on the hydrogen storage was examined by focusing on the formation enthalpies of TiFeH and TiFeH_(2) hydrides,which were closely related to the change in the location of plateaus in the pressure-composition-temperature *** physical properties such as the volume expansion due to hydride formation were also examined to provide additional criteria for selecting optimum alloying conditions in future alloying design *** alloying elements that maximize the grain boundary embrittlement due to the solute segregation were proposed for the enhanced initial activation of TiFe-based hydrogen storage alloys.

AIM: To assess the efficacy and safety of weekly docetaxel plus a fixed-dose rate(FDR) of gemcitabine in metastatic esophageal squamous cell carcinoma(SCC).METHODS: A multi-center, open-label, prospective phase Ⅱ study was ***-three esophageal SCC patients with documented progression after fluoropyrimidine/platinum-based first-line chemotherapy were enrolled and treated with docetaxel 35 mg/m2 and gemcitabine 1000 mg/m2 iv at a FDR(10 mg/m2 per minute) on days 1 and *** was repeatedevery twenty-one days until disease progression, unacceptable toxicity, or consent *** primary endpoint was response rate(RR), and secondary endpoints were safety, progression-free survival(PFS) and overall survival(OS).RESULTS: Combination of weekly docetaxel and FDR gemcitabine was well tolerated: the most common treatment-related adverse events were anemia(97%), fatigue(64%) and neutropenia(55%).One patient with multiple lung and lymph node metastases died of respiratory failure after receiving four cycles of chemotherapy, and the possibility of drug-induced pneumonitis could not be completely *** control(objective response plus stable disease) in the ITT population was achieved in 88% of patients, and the overall RR was 30%(95%CI: 15%-46%).The median PFS and OS were 4.0(95%CI: 3.4-4.6) and 8.8 mo(95%CI: 7.8-9.8 mo), ***: A combination of weekly docetaxel and FDR gemcitabine showed promising antitumor activity and tolerability in previously treated, metastatic esophageal SCC.
