Hypoxia is a major factor shaping the immune landscape,and several cancer models have been developed to emulate hypoxic ***,to date,they still have several limitations,such as the lack of reproducibility,inadequate biophysical cues,limited immune cell infiltration,and poor oxygen(O_(2))control,leading to non-pathophysiological tumor ***,it is essential to develop better cancer models that mimic key features of the tumor extracellular matrix and recreate tumor-associated hypoxia while allowing cell infiltration and cancer-immune cell ***,hypoxia-inducing cryogels(HICs)have been engineered using hyaluronic acid(HA)to fabricate three-dimensional microtissues and model a hypoxic tumor ***,tumor cell-laden HICs have been designed to deplete O_(2) locally and induce long-standing *** promoted changes in hypoxia-responsive gene expression and phenotype,a metabolic adaptation to anaerobic glycolysis,and chemotherapy ***,HIC-supported tumor models induced dendritic cell(DC)inhibition,revealing a phenotypic change in the plasmacytoid DC(pDC)subset and an impaired conventional DC(cDC)response in ***,our HIC-based melanoma model induced CD8^(+)T cell inhibition,a condition associated with the downregulation of pro-inflammatory cytokine secretion,increased expression of immunomodulatory factors,and decreased degranulation and cytotoxic capacity of T ***,these data suggest that HICs can be used as a tool to model solid-like tumor microenvironments and has great potential to deepen our understanding of cancer-immune cell relationship in low O_(2) conditions and may pave the way for developing more effective therapies.

Sediment Quality Assessment on Bartlett Pond in Laredo, Southern Texas, USA

This study evaluates the dynamics of trace metals impacts on the ecosystems of the Bartlett Pond, a small shallow wetland pond located in Laredo, Texas by analyzing sediment samples taken from four quadrants of the pond. The concentrations of trace elements in sediment samples are highest for iron (Fe), followed by chromium (Cr), then lead (Pb), with lower concentration of antimony (Sb), cobalt (Co), arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), and the lowest concentration being thallium (Tl) within Bartlett Pond. The sediment quality of the pond is acceptable for organisms and the environment as trace element concentrations (e.g. As, Cd, Cr, and Pb) are within the probable effect concentration (PEC) of National Ocean and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) guidelines although the PEC values for Co, Fe, Sb and Tl are not given. Bivariate and multivariate correlation analysis shows that most trace elements exhibit a strong positive correlation among them indicating the same anthropogenic sources and biogeochemical processes control these trace elements concentrations within the pond. We provided a comprehensive snapshot of trace element concentrations in sediments through descriptive analysis, laying the foundation for future environmental risk assessments. Correlation analysis of eight trace elements helped identify relationships, offering insights into pollution sources and potential health impacts. Additionally, univariate and multivariate predictive analyses generated numerous models, extending beyond the interpretation of partial and full regression coefficients. We also included graphical analyses of trace element variations, which are critical for understanding environmental processes and geochemical patterns. These findings advance our understanding about trace metals dynamics in sediments and may be a valuable reference for ecosystems and environmental management of different landscapes.

Distribution of plant species along the elevation gradient in Pangi, a high altitude and remote eco-region in Western Himalaya, India

The Himalayan high-altitude eco-regions exhibit higher plant species diversity, and several environmental factors play a crucial role in shaping species distribution and diversity. The aim of the present study is to investigate the floristic composition, distribution of endemic, threatened and native taxa across the elevation zones and the effect of various environmental factors on species richness pattern along the elevation gradient in Pangi, a remote highaltitude region of Himalaya. We conducted extensive field surveys covering 31 localities and established elevational transects for assessing species distribution and the factors affecting thereof. Additionally, information on nativity, endemism, and IUCN red-list categories of threatened species were compiled from published and online resources. Data were analysed using regression model and Non-Metric MultiDimensional Scaling(NMDS). In the present study, we recorded a total of 771 plant species across the region. In regression model, the elevation and anthropogenic variables and their interaction showed significant negative effects on the species richness. Species richness was found to decrease with the increasing elevation, showing a humped shaped pattern, with maximum richness observed in the mid-elevations(2,400m to 3,300m above sea level). The pattern of distribution of native and non-native species along the elevation gradient showed opposite trends, and proportion of native species increased towards the higher elevations. Further, NMDS ordination suggests that zone-Ⅰ(2,100-2,500m asl) and zone-Ⅴ(4,001-4,500m asl) had highest differences in species composition, while zone-Ⅰ, zone-Ⅱ(2,501-3,000m asl), and zone-Ⅲ(3,001-3,500m asl) showed higher affinity with respect to their species composition. The various theoretical and experimental models for ion conduction mechanism of fast ion conducting （FIC） glass electrolytes have been reported in the present review paper. Some characterization techniques of FIC glasses are presented. The experimental methods for determination of some ion transport parameters viz ionic conductivity （σ）, ionic mobility （μ）, mobile ion concentration （n）, ionic drift velocity （Vd）, ionic transference number （tion） and activation energies of FIC glasses are explained. Quantum Cryptography for Internet of Things Security

Internet of things (IoT) is a developing technology with a lot of scope in the future. It can ease various different tasks for us. On one hand, IoT is useful for us, on the other hand, it has many serious security threats, like data breaches, side-channel attacks, and virus and data authentication. Classical cryptographic algorithms, like the Rivest-Shamir-Adleman (RSA) algorithm, work well under the classical computers. But the technology is slowly shifting towards quantum computing, which has immense processing power and is more than enough to break the current cryptographic algorithms easily. So it is required that we have to design quantum cryptographic algorithms to prevent our systems from security breaches even before quantum computers come in the market for commercial uses. IoT will also be one of the disciplines, which needs to be secured to prevent any malicious activities. In this paper, we review the common security threats in IoT and the presently available solutions with their drawbacks. Then quantum cryptography is introduced with some of its variations. And finally, the analysis has been carried out in terms of the pros and cons of implementing quantum cryptography for IoT security.

Analysis of silicon-based integrated photovoltaic–electrochemical hydrogen generation system under varying temperature and illumination

Last decade witnessed tremendous research and development in the area of photo-electrolytic hydrogen generation using chemically stable nanostructured photo-cathode/anode materials. Due to intimately coupled charge separation and photo-catalytic processes, it is very difficult to optimize individual components of such system leading to a very low demonstrated solar-to-fuel efficiency (SFE) of less than 1%. Recently there has been growing interest in an integrated photovoltaic–electrochemical (PV–EC) system based on GaAs solar cells with the demonstrated SFE of 24.5% under concentrated illumination condition. But a high cost of GaAs based solar cells and recent price drop of poly-crystalline silicon (pc-Si) solar cells motivated researchers to explore silicon based integrated PV–EC system. In this paper a theoretical framework is introduced to model silicon-based integrated PV–EC device. The theoretical framework is used to analyze the coupling and kinetic losses of a silicon solar cell based integrated PV–EC water splitting system under varying temperature and illumination. The kinetic loss occurs in the range of 19.1%–27.9% and coupling loss takes place in the range of 5.45%–6.74% with respect to varying illumination in the range of 20–100 mW/cm2. Similarly, the effect of varying temperature has severe impact on the performance of the system, wherein the coupling loss occurs in the range of 0.84%–21.51% for the temperature variation from 25 to 50 °C. © 2016 Science Press
