Evolution and Role of Intraoperative Neurophysiological Monitoring in Intramedullary Spinal Cord Surgery: A 2-Year Series from Saudi Arabia

Introduction: Despite recent advances in neuroimaging and microsurgical techniques, surgical resection of spinal cord tumours remains a challenge. However, the evolution with advances and refinement of neurophysiological equipment and methodologies, intra-operative neurophysiolo- gical monitoring (IONM) is now regarded as an essential adjunct to the surgical management of intramedullary spinal cord tumours. This study aims to report our preliminary experience with IONM and emphasise its effective role of achieving maximum tumour resection and minimising neurological injury. Methods: This is a retrospective study performed at our institution between July 2012 and August 2013. It included a cohort of 6 consecutive patients presented with intramedullary spinal cord tumours. Their mean age was 26 years (range, 4 months - 37 years), all were males, and the mean follow up was 11.6 months. Results: We combined the use of somatosensory evoked potentials (SSEPs) and motor evoked potentials (MEPs) in spinal cord surgery. SSEPs are monitored during the incision of the dorsal midline of the spinal cord and this was used in two of our patients and MEPs were used as an essential monitoring during the tumour resection. In addition, we used free-running electromyography (EMG) and muscle MEPs (mMEPs) during tumour resection. Four of our patients (two with ependymoma, one with ganglioglioma, and one with pilocytic astrocytoma) had complete tumour resection and two patients (pilocytic and diffuse astrocytoma) had IONM changes during surgery and had partial tumour resection. At 6-month follow up all our patients had made a good recovery with no new neurological sequelae. Conclusion: This small series and literature review is presented to add and improve the understanding of IONM in intramedullary spinal cord procedures and to reinforce the importance of IONM in optimising tumour resection and neurological outcome. Prevalence of Anti-HCV Antibodies Among Thalassemia Patients in Mosul City, Iraq

The study included 200 thalassemia patients, 120 （60%） males and 80 （40%） females, at age 2-30 years the mean age 16 years and 100 persons from blood donors at age 20-50 years, the mean age 35 years, as control group. The authors used ELISA HCV 3.0 to detect anti-HCV in serum of thalassemia patients and blood donors. The results show 17% positive, 76% negative and 7% equivocal in serum ofthalassemia patients, but show 1% positive, 98% negative, 1% equivocal in serum of blood donors. The results show significant difference in P ≤ 0.05 between prevalence of anti-HCV antibodies among thalassemia patients and blood donors, the confirmatory tests by recombinant immunoblot assay version 3.0 （RIBA） show 17.5% positive, 79% negative and 3.5% equivocal in serum of thalassemia patients but show 2% positive, 98% negative in serum of blood donors. The thalassemia patients in the present study region had high seroprevalence of anti-HCV.

Single Wall Carbon Nanotubes (SWCNTs) as (i) Type in the Photovoltaic Cell of Nano-Dimensions

In this paper, a new modified approach to design the photovoltaic cell has been presented by adding Single Wall Carbon Nanotubes (SWCNTs) as type (i). The main issue is to increase the efficiency of the photovoltaic cell, on the other hand, to exploit a larger range of electromagnetic wave frequencies, specifically a range within terahertz (THz) frequency domain, using 3D EM computer simulation technology (CST). It is clear in the normal PV cell start working at frequency of 500 THz, while the frequency at which the PV cell with SWCNTs operates is much less and it is close to zero, on the other hand, the PV cell with SWCNTs needs a larger cross-section area of 2800 nm2 to operate at frequency of 500 THz. This cell can be easily produced industrially, which means increases the efficiency of solar cell.

U型管蒸汽发生器(UTSG)是压水堆(PWR)中最常见的部件之一,所以需要对U型管蒸汽发生器的性能进行精确的仿真,以分析各种设计和运行参数对核电站性能的影响。UTSG是一类非线性、不确定、非最小相位和时滞系统。进水温度和其他不确定因素对UTSG的控制提出了很大的挑战。针对上述问题,本文分析了两类系统(线性系统和非线性系统),对不同区域和参数的U型管蒸汽发生器进行了数学建模。其中一个模型将所有行为线性化,使用6个变量;另一个模型包括数学模型中的所有非线性变量,使用9个变量。本研究主要有两个目的。第一:利用MATLAB/SIMULINK对UTSG的两个系统进行建模,并研究这些系统在稳态和瞬态条件下的行为。第二部分:对UTSG数学模型的水位系统进行检测和控制设计。UTSG对瞬态条件(扰动如:给水质量流量,蒸汽压力和温度)的响应在蒸汽发生器安全评估中起关键作用。本文讨论了所有这些响应并且得出了结果。提出了自抗扰控制技术(ADRC)用于控制目的,解决水位跟踪问题,并在一些变化过程中主动抑制固有动态和外部扰动基于ADRC。在MATLAB/SIMULINK环境下实现了自抗扰控制器(ADRC)和传统控制系统(PID控制器),并对ADRC与PID控制器进行了比较研究。仿真结果表明,所提出的控制方法(ADRC)提供了一种最优、鲁棒的水位跟踪方法,比PID控制器具有更好的跟踪性能。此外,它在模型不确定性和外部扰动存在的情况下具有较强的鲁棒性。

SSD（Single-Shot MultiBox Detector）是一种流行的目标检测方法。目前,利用卷积神经网络进行目标检测占据主导地位。然而,卷积神经网络在结构上存在固有的问题:高层网络接受域大,语义信息表示能力强,但分辨率低,几何细节信息弱。低层网络的接收场相对较小,具有较强的几何细节信息表示能力。虽然分辨率越高,但语义信息表达能力越弱。SSD利用多尺度特征映射预测目标,同时利用接收场大的高层次特征信息预测大目标,对低层次特征信息的低接收场预测小目标。这就带来了一个问题:在利用低级网络特征信息预测小目标时,由于缺乏高级语义特征,SSD对小目标的检测效果较差。本文在分析和介绍经典的SSD算法的基础上,以快速检测小目标为目标,提出了一种基于精度与速度权衡的单点多盒探测器（SSD）的基本结构。为了提高对小目标的识别精度,提出了一种多层次特征融合的MSSD方法。具体来说,融合操作分为两个特征融合模块,级联模块和元素求和模块,在添加上下文信息的方式上有所不同。MSSD训练采用VGG16和深残差网络优化候选盒回归和分类任务输入特征映射,提高检测精度和检测速度。在残差网络的基础上,本文采用基于FPN的网络体系结构,对传统的采样结构进行了改进。将高层语义信息集成到底层网络特征信息中,丰富了预测回归定位框和分类任务输入的多尺度特征映射,提高了检测精度。在logo和VOC2007/2012数据集上进行了实验,这些数据集包含大量的小对象（50像素或更少的对象）。实验结果表明,这两个融合模块在PASCAL VOC2007和Logo数据集上的映射效果都优于基准SSD,特别是在一些小目标类别上。

Optimal Extraction of Groundwater in Gaza Coastal Aquifer

Two multi-objective management models are applied on a local area selected from the regional Gaza coastal aquifer. The objectives and constraints of these management scenarios include maximizing the total volume of water pumped, minimizing the salt concentration of the pumped water, and controlling the drawdown limits. The physical model is based on the CODESA-3D density-dependent advective-dispersive solute transport model. Genetic algorithm is used as the optimization tool. The models are tested on a part of the aquifer ( ) with 9 existing pumping wells located at various depths. The results of the optimization show that the optimization/simulation approach can give better decision if there is enough information to feed to the model. It confirms that the use of the concept of safe yield alone is not enough for sustainable develop-ment of the coastal aquifer. It shows that the optimum pumping rate is in the range of 26%–34% of the total natural replenishment. The application shows that the proposed technique is a powerful tool for solving this type of management problems.

BACKGROUND Hepatitis B virus(HBV) is a cause of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC). Interestingly, this process is not necessarily mediated through cirrhosis and may in fact involve oncogenic processes. Prior studies have suggested specific oncogenic gene expression pathways were affected by viral regulatory proteins. Thus, identifying these genes and associated pathways could highlight predictive factors for HCC transformation and has implications in early diagnosis and *** To elucidate HBV oncogenesis in HCC and identify potential therapeutic *** We employed our Search, Tag, Analyze, Resource platform to conduct a meta-analysis of public data from National Center for Biotechnology Information’s Gene Expression Omnibus. We performed meta-analysis consisting of 155 tumor samples compared against 185 adjacent nontumor samples and analyzed results with ingenuity pathway *** Our analysis revealed liver X receptors/retinoid X receptor(RXR) activation and farnesoid X receptor/RXR activation as top canonical pathways amongst others. Top upstream regulators identified included the Ras family gene rab-like protein 6(RABL6). The role of RABL6 in oncogenesis is beginning to unfold but its specific role in HBV-related HCC remains undefined. Our causal analysis suggests RABL6 mediates pathogenesis of HBV-related HCC through promotion of genes related to cell division, epigenetic regulation, and Akt signaling. We conducted survival analysis that demonstrated increased mortality with higher RABL6 expression. Additionally, homeobox A10(HOXA10) was a top upstream regulator and was strongly upregulated in our analysis. HOXA10 has recently been demonstrated to contribute to HCC pathogenesis in vitro. Capacitive-Resistive Measurements of Cobalt-Phthalocyanine Organic Humidity Sensors

In this study, the fabrication and characterization of capacitive humidity sensors using cobalt-phthalocyanine （CoPc） as the active material were presented. Thin films of CoPc were deposited by drop casting on glass substrates with pre-deposited aluminum electrodes to form A1/CoPc/A1 surface-type humidity sensors. The effect of humidity on the electrical properties of the CoPc film was investigated by measuring capacitance and resistance of the samples at four different frequencies of the applied voltage. It was observed that the capacitance of the sensor increased while the resistance decreased with raising the relative humidity. It was also found that the values of capacitance and resistance decreased with increasing frequency. The optical absorption spectra and optical band gap energy of CoPc films were measured. The structure of CoPc powder and thin films has been studied by X-ray diffraction （XRD）, scanning electron microscopy （SEM）, and atomic force microscopy （AFM）. Results of XRD studies show that the film structure is polycrystalline with the monoclinic structure while thin films have a peak for annealing temperatures with （100） orientation. Also, the surface morphology （grain size and roughness） for CoPc films have been studied by AFM.

Optimum alternate material selection methodology for an aircraft skin

Weight penalty has been a challenge for design engineers of aerospace ***’s high-efficiency combat aircraft undergoes intense stress and strain during flying missions,which require stronger and stiffer materials to retain structural *** metallic materials have been successfully used for the construction of aircraft structures and components,metals still have a low strength-to-weight *** paper aims to develop an alternate optimised material selection methodology to replace the metallic skin of a medium-sized military *** search for the optimum material will result in reduced aircraft weight which will be benefitted by extra payload on the *** selection methodology is comprised of finding design pressure limits on the aircraft skin,and comparison of properties(strength,elastic modulus,shear modulus,etc.)and performance(safety factor,deflection,and stress)of the existing metallic skin with alternate optimised *** comparison was made under aerodynamic pressure,bending force,and twisting *** Fibre Reinforced Polymer/Epoxy(CFRP)Uni-Directional(UD)prepreg(elastic modolus is 209 GPa)was selected as an alternate optimum material to replace the aluminium alloy skin of the aircraft *** selected alternate optimum material resulted in the reduction of aircraft skin weight by 30%.
