Levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in some agricultural, industrial and urban areas along Xiamen coastal waters, China

An intensive investigation was conducted to study the distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons （PAHs）, to show firstly the level of pollution in the agricultural areas and analyses specifically the status of soil polluted by these persistent pollutants in some locations of Xiamen region. Soil samples collected from Jiulong agricultural catchment have been analysed for 16 PAH compounds, using gas chromatography flame ionization detection in order to determine the level of selected PAH components and to identify the factors that may control their distribution and persistence in the area. The main PAHs found in soil samples were the low molecular weight. The total PAHs detected in soil samples ranged from 0.50 to 0.95 μg/g soil. The highest values of PAHs were significantly detected in the orange tree leaves, which range from 236.1 to 249.3 μg/g soil showing recent atmospheric inputs of these volatile pollutants. The distribution of PAHs in vegetable were monitored and indicating that the concentration were high and ranged from 8.24 to 58.87 μg/g. Other sediment samples were also collected and analysed from urban sewage （5.26 μg/g dw）, aquacultural （0.52 μg/g dw） and industrial areas （from 0.62 to 2.09 μg/g dw）, during this investigation. The contamination of Jiulong river estuary and Xiamen Western Sea by PAHs has been then widely justified by wastcwatcr discharges and soil runoffs from these areas. The results, therefore, provide important information on the current contamination status caused by the atmospheric transport and point to the need for urgent actions to stop the release of these hydrocarbons to the environment. The necessity of implementing systematic monitoring of PAHs is also emphasized.

Oblique propagation of nonlinear ion-acoustic cnoidal waves in magnetized electron–positron–ion plasmas with nonextensive electrons

Theoretical investigation of nonlinear electrostatic ion-acoustic cnoidal waves(IACWs) is presented in magnetized electron–positron–ion plasma with nonextensive electrons and Maxwellian positrons. Using reductive perturbation technique, Korteweg–de Vries equation is derived and its cnoidal wave solution is analyzed. For given plasma parameters, our model supports only positive potential(compressive) IACW structures. The effect of relevant plasma parameters(viz., nonextensive parameter q, positron concentration p, temperature ratio σ,obliqueness l3) on the characteristics of IACWs is discussed in detail.

Effect of loading rate and time delay on the tangent modulus method(TMM)in coal and coal measured rocks

Non-destructive techniques of in-situ stress measurement from oriented cored rocks have great potential to be developed as a cost cost-effective and reliable alternative to the conventional overcoring and hydraulic fracturing *** tangent modulus method(TMM)is one such technique that can be applied to oriented cored rocks to measure in-situ *** the deformation rate analysis(DRA),the rock specimen is subjected to two cycles of uniaxial compression and the stress-tangent modulus curve for the two cycles is obtained from the stress-strain curve.A bending point in the tangent modulus curve of the first cycle is observed,separating it from the tangent modulus curve of the second *** point of separation between the two curves is assumed to be the previously applied maximum stress.A number of experiments were conducted on coal and coal measured rocks(sandstone and limestone)to understand the effect of loading conditions and the time *** specimens were preloaded,and cyclic compressions were applied under three different modes of loading,four different strain rates,and time delays of up to one *** bending point in the stress-tangent modulus curves occurred approximately at the applied pre-stress levels under all three loading modes,and no effect of loading rate was observed on the bending points in ***,a clear effect of time delay was observed on the TMM,contradicting the DRA *** could be due to the sensitivity of TMM and the range of its applicability,all of which need further investigation for the in-situ stress measurement.

Since reporting cases of breast cancer are on the rise all over the *** in regions such as Pakistan,Saudi Arabia,and the United *** methods for the early detection and diagnosis of breast cancer are *** usual diagnosis procedures followed by physicians has been updated with modern diagnostic approaches that include computer-aided support for better *** learning based practices has increased the accuracy and efficiency of medical diagnosis,which has helped save lives of many *** is much research in the field of medical imaging diagnostics that can be applied to the variety of data such as magnetic resonance images(MRIs),mammograms,X-rays,ultrasounds,and histopathological images,but magnetic resonance(MR)and mammogram imaging have proved to present the promising *** proposed paper has presented the results of classification algorithms over Breast Cancer(BC)mammograms from a novel dataset taken from hospitals in the Qassim health cluster of Saudi *** paper has developed a novel approach called the novel spectral extraction algorithm(NSEA)that uses feature extraction and fusion by using local binary pattern(LBP)and bilateral algorithms,as well as a support vector machine(SVM)as a *** NSEA with the SVM classifier demonstrated a promising accuracy of 94%and an elapsed time of 0.68 milliseconds,which were significantly better results than those of comparative experiments from classifiers named Naïve Bayes,logistic regression,K-Nearest Neighbor(KNN),Gaussian Discriminant Analysis(GDA),AdaBoost and Extreme Learning Machine(ELM).ELM produced the comparative accuracy of 94%however has a lower elapsed time of 1.35 as compared to *** has produced a fairly well accuracy of 82%,KNN has a low accuracy of 66%.However Logistic Regression,GDA and Naïve Bayes have produced the lowest accuracies of 47%,43%and 42%.

Evaluation of Landsat 8 image pansharpening in estimating soil organic matter using multiple linear regression and artificial neural networks

In agricultural systems,the regular monitoring of Soil Organic Matter(SOM)dynamics is *** task is costly and time-consuming when using the conventional method,especially in a very fragmented area and with intensive agricultural activity,such as the area of Sidi *** study area is located in the Doukkala irrigated perimeter in *** data can provide an alternative and fill this gap at a low *** to predict SOM from a satellite image,whether linear or nonlinear,have shown considerable *** study aims to compare SOM prediction using Multiple Linear Regression(MLR)and Artificial Neural Networks(ANN).A total of 368 points were collected at a depth of 0-30 cm and analyzed in the *** image at 15 m resolution(MSPAN)was produced from a 30 m resolution(MS)Landsat-8 image using image pansharpening processing and panchromatic band(15 m).The results obtained show that the MLR models predicted the SOM with(training/validation)R^(2)values of 0.62/0.63 and 0.64/0.65 and RMSE values of 0.23/0.22 and 0.22/0.21 for the MS and MSPAN images,*** contrast,the ANN models predicted SOM with R2 values of 0.65/0.66 and 0.69/0.71 and RMSE values of 0.22/0.10 and 0.21/0.18 for the MS and MSPAN images,*** pansharpening improved the prediction accuracy by 2.60%and 4.30%and reduced the estimation error by 0.80%and 1.30%for the MLR and ANN models,respectively.

Necroptosis:An emerging type of cell death in liver diseases

Cell death has been extensively evaluated for decades and it is well recognized that pharmacological interventions directed to inhibit cell death can prevent significant cell loss and can thus improve an organ’s physiological function. For long, only apoptosis was considered as a sole form of programmed cell death. Recently necroptosis, a RIP1/RIP3-dependent programmed cell death, has been identified as an apoptotic backup cell death mechanism with necrotic morphology. The evidences of necroptosis and protective effects achieved by blocking necroptosis have been extensively reported in recent past. However, only a few studies reported the evidence of necroptosis and protective effects achieved by inhibiting necroptosis in liver related disease conditions. Although the number of necroptosis initiators is increasing; however, interestingly, it is still unclear that what actually triggers necroptosis in different liver diseases or if there is always a different necroptosis initiator in each specific disease condition followed by specific downstream signaling molecules. Understanding the precise mechanism of necroptosis as well as counteracting other cell death pathways in liver diseases could provide a useful insight towards achieving extensive therapeutic significance. By targeting necroptosis and/or other parallel death pathways, a significant cell loss and thus a decrement in an organ’s physiological function can be prevented.
