Anthropometric assessment of a Middle eastern group of autistic children

Background:Growth abnormalities are uniquely associated with autism spectrum disorders(ASD);however,the extent to which growth abnormalities are present has hardly been *** current study aims to compare the differences in anthropometric parameters in a group of autistic egyptian children and the healthy normal ***:We recruited 100 children with ASD from the Outpatient Clinic for"Autistic Children"at the Medical Research Hospital of excellence,National Research Centre in Cairo,*** were diagnosed by DSM-IV criteria of the American Psychiatric Association,Autism Diagnostic Interview-Revised,and Childhood Autism Rating *** these children at age of 3-10 years,71 were males and 29 *** anthropometric parameters were assessed in view of data of the healthy egyptians of pertinent sex and ***:Weight and body mass index increased because of a signifi cant increase in subcutaneous fat *** tendency with a probable decrease in muscle mass was more evident in male or in older children,likely resulting from sedentary life style and food ***:The Z head circumference score and its variance signifi cantly increased especially in males or older children,suggesting the relative overgrowth of the brain in a substantial percentage of egyptian children with *** concluded that increased fat composition in egyptian autistic children with decreased muscle mass necessitates tailoring a specially designed food supplementation program to ameliorate the severity of autism symptoms.

effect of water storage on fluoride release and mechanical properties of a polyacid-modified composite resin (compomer)

We evaluated the effect of water storage on fluoride release and mechanical properties of compomer restorative material. Fluoride release was recorded using a specific fluoride electrode. Flexural properties and fracture toughness were measured using a universal testing machine. Vickers hardness was measured using a micro-hardness tester. There was initial burst of fluoride release up to 1 w, which was diminished to a low level in 1 mon and remained relatively constant over 6 mon. Flexural strength and hardness were increased up to 1 mon followed by a gradual decrease up to 6 mon. Flexural modulus was decreased gradually up to 6 mon. Fracture toughness was increased during the first week and gradually decreased over the storage period. We concluded that flexural properties, fracture toughness, Vickers hardness and fluoride release of compomer were sensitive to water as well as storage time. There was a significant effect of fluoride release on the studied mechanical properties.

evaluation of Angiopoietin-2 Serum Level as a Marker of Cardiovascular Risk in Children with Chronic Kidney Disease

Background: Cardiovascular complications are a major clinical problem in uremic patients accounting for 44% of all deaths in this population. Angiopoietin cytokines are involved with controlling micro vascular permeability, vasodilatation and vasoconstriction by signaling smooth muscle cells surrounding vessels. Aim: To assess Angiopoietin-2 serum level as an early marker of cardiovascular risks in children with chronic kidney disease on regular hemodialysis and correlate with intimal medial thickness and echo data in those children. Patients and methods: The study included 40 children with CKD on regular hemodialysis (HD), and they were selected from the hemodialysis unit of Al-Zahraa Hospital, Al-Azhar University, during the period from December 2014 to April 2015. Another group of 40 apparently healthy children, matches age and sex with patients group as a controls. Angiopoietin-2 serum level, Doppler ultrasound (U/S) to assess: intima-media thickness (IMT) and the peak systolic velocity (PSV) of the main arteries including the (aorta, carotid and femoral) arteries, conventional echo and tissue Doppler imaging (TDI) of mitral and tricuspid annular velocities are obtained for both groups. Results: Children on regular HD have significantly higher (Angiopoietin-2) serum level compared to their controls, and it is (161.35 ± 38.30 ng/ml) and (9.25 ± 12.64 ng/ml) respectively (p, 0.000) and increases in the aorta, carotid and femoral (IMT) with significant increase in their mean systolic velocities in patients group compared to the controls. Significant increase in tricuspid valve late diastolic velocity (TVA vel m/s) and (e/e’ ratio) obtained by (TDI), its abnormalities threshold is detected in patients group than controls, with significant increase right ventricular systolic pulmonary pressure in patients compared to the controls.
