Solar-driven hydrogen production from seawater attracts great interest for its emerging role in decarbonizing global energy consumption. Given the complexity of natural seawater content, photocatalytic vapor splitting offers a low-cost and safe solution, but with a very low solar-to-hydrogen conversion efficiency. With a focus on cutting-edge photothermal–photocatalytic device design and system integration, the recent research advances on vapor splitting from seawater, as well as industrial implementations in the past decades were reviewed. In addition, the design strategies of the key processes were reviewed, including vapor temperature and pressure control during solar thermal vapor generation from seawater, capillary-fed vaporization with salt repellent, and direct photocatalytic vapor splitting for hydrogen production. Moreover, the existing laboratory-scale and industrial-scale systems, and the integration principles and remaining challenges in the future seawater-to-hydrogen technology were discussed.

Case of Refractory Thrombocytopenia in Pregnancy Associated with May-Heglin Anomaly after Repeated Platelet Transfusions

May-Heglin Anomaly is an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by macrothrombocytopenia with a platelet function that is usually preserved. Platelets play an essential role in hemostasis. During pregnancy, a woman is susceptible to complications, including postpartum hemorrhage. Monitoring patients’ hemostatic functions and observing the patient’s clinical picture to maintain patient safety is paramount, while avoiding unnecessary therapeutic measures. This case report presents a rare instance of May-Heglin Anomaly (MHA) in a 35-year-old pregnant patient, with refractory thrombocytopenia despite receiving multiple platelet transfusions. Initially referred to as gravida 5 para 4 with severe thrombocytopenia at 28 weeks gestation, throughout her pregnancy, she was closely monitored and received over 40 units of platelets, which failed to increase her platelet count significantly. She delivered a healthy baby via vaginal delivery at 38 weeks, with her platelet count still critically low. This report highlights the challenges of managing MHA in pregnancy, the inefficacy of standard thrombocytopenia treatments such as platelet transfusion in MHA patients, and the importance of tailored management strategies to ensure maternal and fetal safety.

A consensus meeting of national experts from all major national hepatobiliary centres in the country was held on May 26,2023,at the Pakistan Kidney and Liver Institute&Research Centre(PKLI&RC)after initial consultations with the *** Pakistan Society for the Study of Liver Diseases(PSSLD)and PKLI&RC jointly organised this *** effort was based on a comprehensive literature review to establish national practice guidelines for hilar cholangiocarcinoma(hCCA).The consensus was that hCCA is a complex disease and requires a multidisciplinary team approach to best manage these *** coordinated effort can minimise delays and give patients a chance for curative treatment and effective *** diagnostic and staging workup includes high-quality computed tomography,magnetic resonance imaging,and magnetic resonance *** cytology or biopsy utilizing endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography is a mainstay for ***,histopathologic confirmation is not always required before *** ultrasound with fine needle aspiration of regional lymph nodes and positron emission tomography scan are valuable adjuncts for *** only curative treatment is the surgical resection of the biliary tree based on the Bismuth-Corlette *** patients with unresectable hCCA can be considered for liver *** chemotherapy should be offered to patients with a high risk of *** use of preoperative biliary drainage and the need for portal vein embolisation should be based on local multidisciplinary *** with acute cholangitis can be drained with endoscopic or percutaneous biliary *** chemotherapy with cisplatin and gemcitabine has shown improved survival in patients with irresectable and recurrent hCCA.

Removal of arsenite by reductive precipitation in dithionite solution activated by UV light

This study investigates the removal of arsenite（As（III）） from water using dithionite activated by UV light. This work evaluated the removal kinetics of As（III） under UV light irradiation as affected by dithionite dose and light intensity, and characterized the nature of the precipitated solids using XPS and SEM-EDS. Photolysis of dithionite was observed by measuring dithionite concentration using UV absorbance at 315 nm. This study also investigated the effect of UV light path length on soluble As concentrations to understand resolubilization mechanisms. Total soluble As concentrations were observed to decrease with reaction time due to reduction of arsenite to form solids having a yellow-orange *** removal mechanism was found to be reductive precipitation that formed solids of elemental arsenic or arsenic sulfide. However, these solids were observed to resolubilize at later times after dithionite had been consumed. Resolubilization of As was prevented and additional As removal was obtained by frequent dosing of dithionite throughout the experiment. As（III） removal is attributed to photolysis of dithionite by UV light and production of reactive radicals that reduce As（III） and convert it to solid forms.

In this article, a topological sensitivity framework for far-field detection of a diamet- rically small electromagnetic inclusion is established. The cases of single and multiple measurements of the electric far-field scattering amplitude at a fixed frequency are tak- en into account. The performance of the algorithm is analyzed theoretically in terms of its resolution and sensitivity for locating an inclusion. The stability of the framework with respect to measurement and medium noises is discussed. Moreover, the quantitative results for signal-to-noise ratio are presented. A few numerical results are presented to illustrate the detection capabilities of the proposed framework with single and multiple measurements.

Team Formation(TF)is considered one of the most significant problems in computer science and *** is defined as forming the best team of experts in a social network to complete a task with least *** real-world problems,such as task assignment,vehicle routing,nurse scheduling,resource allocation,and airline crew scheduling,are based on the TF *** has been shown to be a Nondeterministic Polynomial time(NP)problem,and high-dimensional problem with several local optima that can be solved using efficient approximation *** paper proposes two improved swarm-based algorithms for solving team formation *** first algorithm,entitled Hybrid Heap-Based Optimizer with Simulated Annealing Algorithm(HBOSA),uses a single crossover operator to improve the performance of a standard heap-based optimizer(HBO)*** also employs the simulated annealing(SA)approach to improve model convergence and avoid local minima *** second algorithm is the Chaotic Heap-based Optimizer Algorithm(CHBO).CHBO aids in the discovery of new solutions in the search space by directing particles to different regions of the search *** HBO’s optimization process,a logistic chaotic map is *** performance of the two proposed algorithms(HBOSA)and(CHBO)is evaluated using thirteen benchmark functions and tested in solving the TF problem with varying number of experts and ***,the proposed algorithms were compared to well-known optimization algorithms such as the Heap-Based Optimizer(HBO),Developed Simulated Annealing(DSA),Particle SwarmOptimization(PSO),GreyWolfOptimization(GWO),and Genetic Algorithm(GA).Finally,the proposed algorithms were applied to a real-world benchmark dataset known as the Internet Movie Database(IMDB).The simulation results revealed that the proposed algorithms outperformed the compared algorithms in terms of efficiency and performance,with fast convergence to the global minimum.

Learning from imbalanced data is one of the greatest challenging problems in binary classification,and this problem has gained more importance in recent *** the class distribution is imbalanced,classical machine learning algorithms tend to move strongly towards the majority class and disregard the ***,the accuracy may be high,but the model cannot recognize data instances in the minority class to classify them,leading to many *** methods have been proposed in the literature to handle the imbalance problem,but most are complicated and tend to simulate unnecessary *** this paper,we propose a simple oversampling method based on Multivariate Gaussian distribution and K-means clustering,called *** new method aims to avoid generating noise and control imbalances between and within *** experiments have been carried out with six classifiers and four oversampling *** results on different imbalanced datasets show that the proposed GK-Means outperforms other oversampling methods and improves classification performance as measured by F1-score and Accuracy.

Objective: To investigate the protective effects of aqueous seed extracts of fennel"Foeniculum vulgare"(FVE) and caraway "Carum carvi"(CCE) on liver, kidney and reproductive organs in female rats against cadmium chloride(CC) ***: A total of 36 adult female rats were divided into six groups, six in each *** group(fed normal diet), CC-treated group(50 mg CC/kg diet), CCE-treated group(150 mg CCE/kg diet), CCE + CC group, FVE(150 mg/kg diet) and FVE + CC. One month later, all rats were sacrificed and all samples were collected at proestrus ***: The toxic effects of CC were confirmed biochemically by significant increase of serum concentration of liver enzymes(P < 0.05), and creatinine(P < 0.001). Moreover,CC increased significantly the serum level of malondialdehyde(MDA) and decreased the total antioxidant capacity(TAC)(P < 0.001). In addition, serum concentrations of estrogen, progesterone, follicle-stimulating hormone(FSH) and luteinizing hormone(LH)were significantly decreased(P < 0.01). Histopathologically, CC-treated group revealed marked pathological changes in renal, hepatic, ovarian and uterine tissues. All toxic findings observed in liver and kidney with CC treatment were found to be ameliorated markedly after co-treatments with FVE or CCE. Furthermore, co-treatment of FVE with CC improved significantly all studied reproductive parameters(P < 0.01).Conclusions: Both FVE and CCE could be used as efficient treatments for liver and kidney against CC intoxication. Moreover, FVE could be utilized as a potent treatment to protect and improve female fertility from cadmium intoxication.

Relationship between heart girth, serum progesterone and superovulation response ofdonor Holstein cows

Objective: To determine effects of variations of heart girth, volume trait on embryo quality grade, and to explore the relationship between heart girth and circulating progesterone and correlations of circulating progesterone with embryo quality grade in superstimulated donor Holstein cows. Methods: Nineteen cows were subjected to a standard superstimulation protocol using follicle stimulating hormone. Blood samples were collected before superovulation, at insemination and at collection of embryos for progesterone analysis. Embryo quality grades were compared between high and low heart girth donors. Moreover, Pearson's correlations were determined between heart girth, progesterone and embryo quality. Results: Variation of heart girth was not associated with significant differences in embryo quality grade between high and low heart girth donor cows (P>0.05). However, we observed a significantly higher percentage of the third-grade embryo (24.09%) in low heart girth donors compared to 9.64% in high heart girth donors. Moreover, the percentage of the transferable embryo was numerically higher and that of the degenerated embryo was numerically lower in low heart girth cows. Donor cows with low response to superovulation (total structures ≤ 3) expressed numerically higher mean heart girth, compared to donors with high (total structures>15) and medium (total structures = 4-15) superovulation. Heart girth and body weight of donor cows were moderately correlated (r=0.45, P<0.05), but none was correlated with circulating progesterone at different sampling times except for a moderate correlation between body weight and progesterone at embryo collection (r=0.54, P=0.02). Circulating progesterone before superovulation was moderately correlated to the second-grade embryo (r=0.46, P<0.05) and to the third grade (r=0.52, P<0.05) embryo. Effects of electrochemical synthetic conditions on surface property and photocatalytic performance of copper and iron-mixed p-type oxide electrodes

Earth-abundant copper and iron-mixed oxide（CuO/CuFeO_2; CFO） film electrodes are synthesized using an electrochemical deposition（ED） technique at two different ED potentials（-0.36 and-0.66 V vs saturated calomel electrode（SCE）; denoted as ED-1 and ED-2, respectively）. Then, their surface morphologies are compared, and the photo（electro）catalytic activities for the reduction of Cr（VI） are examined in aqueous solutions at pH 7 under simulated sunlight（AM 1.5 G; 100 mW cm（-2））. The degree of the electrical potential applied to the ED process significantly affects the thickness of the synthesized electrode film and the intensity ratio of the diffraction peaks of CuO（111） and CuFeO_2（012）. A 200 μm thick ED-2 sample with a distinct stacking of CuO on CuFeO_2 exhibits a larger broadband absorption spectrum than the 50-μm thick ED-1 with less separate stacking. Furthermore, the ED-2 sample has a higher intensity ratio of the diffraction peaks of CuO（111） and CuFe02（012） than ED-1. As-synthesized ED-2 samples produce larger photocurrents, leading to faster Cr（VI） reduction on the surface under given potential bias（-0.5 V vs SCE）or bias-free conditions. The energy levels（i.e., flatband potential） for the two samples are almost the same（only 10 mV difference）, presumably supposing that the enhanced photoactivity of the ED-2 sample for Cr（VI） reduction is due to the facilitated charge transfer. The time-resolved photoluminescence emission spectra analysis reveal that the lifetime（r） of the charge carriers in the ED-1 sample is 0.103 ns, which decreases to 0.0876 ns in the ED-2. The ED-2 sample synthesized at a high negative potential is expected to contribute greatly to the application of other solar-to-fuel energy conversion fields as a highly efficient electrode material.
