Fatty liver index vs waist circumference for predicting non-alcoholic fatty liver disease

AIM: To determine the discriminatory performance of fatty liver index (FLI) for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).METHODS: The data of 5052 subjects aged over 18 years were analyzed. FLI was calculated from body mass index, waist circumference (WC), triglyceride, and gamma glutamyl transferase data. Logistic regression analysis was conducted to determine the association between FLI and NAFLD. The discriminatory performance of FLI in the diagnosis of NAFLD was evaluated by receiver operating characteristic analysis. Area under the curves (AUCs) and related confidence intervals were estimated. Optimal cutoff points of FLI in the diagnosis of NAFLD were determined based on the maximum values of Youden’s ***: The mean age of men and women in the study population were 44.8 ± 16.8 and 43.78 ± 15.43, respectively (P = 0.0216). The prevalence of NAFLD was 40.1% in men and 44.2% in women (P < 0.0017). FLI was strongly associated with NAFLD, so that even a one unit increase in FLI increased the chance of developing NAFLD by 5.8% (OR = 1.058, 95%CI: 1.054-1.063, P < 0.0001). Although FLI showed good performance in the diagnosis of NAFLD (AUC = 0.8656 (95%CI: 0.8548-0.8764), there was no significant difference with regards to WC (AUC = 0.8533, 95%CI: 0.8419-0.8646). The performance of FLI was not significantly different between men (AUC = 0.8648, 95%CI: 0.8505-0.8791) and women (AUC = 0.8682, 95%CI: 0.8513-0.8851). The highest performance with regards to age was related to the 18-39 age group (AUC = 0.8930, 95%CI: 0.8766-0.9093). The optimal cutoff points of FLI were 46.9 in men (sensitivity = 0.8242, specificity = 0.7687, Youden’s index = 0.5929) and 53.8 in women (sensitivity = 0.8233, specificity = 0.7655, Youden’s index = 0.5888).CONCLUSION: Although FLI had acceptable discriminatory power in the diagnosis of NAFLD, WC was a simpler and more accessible index with a similar performance.

Objective:To investigate the distribution pattern of animal bites in Mirjaveh,Iran from 2015 to ***:The data on animal bites were collected from the Department of Infectious Diseases,the provincial health *** climatic data on precipitation and temperature during the study period were also *** correlation between incidence and temperature,precipitation rate,land type,and altitude was also ***:The results showed that men were more affected by animal bites than women(76.4%,P<0.001),and the highest incidence rate occurred in the age group of 5-19 *** incidence rate of animal bites was found to be correlated with temperature and *** increase in temperature was associated with a rise in the incidence rate of animal *** number of animal bites increased until 2019,possibly due to an increase in the number of dogs in the ***:Targeted interventions should be implemented to reduce the incidence of animal bites,particularly among children,housewives,and *** access to appropriate treatments,increasing public awareness of the hazards of animal bites,and increasing the number of vaccinated dogs in the area are essential strategies to be considered.

Differential expression of zinc accumulation during two growing seasons of Acacia victoriae

It is important to understand seasonal heavy metal accumulation in different parts of plants in order to develop the best phytoremediation practices for con- taminated soils. For this purpose we exposed, 1 year old A. victoriae seedlings to ZnSO4 in 4 different concentrations： 0, 50, 250 and 500 mg Zn L-1 for 45 days over two growing seasons. Subsequently, bioaccumulation of Zn in different plant tissues （roots, shoots and leafs） was assessed by Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy （AAS） for two peri- ods. In addition, various growth attributes （dry biomass, shoot and root lengths, plant appearance） and functional traits （leaf area, chlorophyll a, b and total） were measured. The accumulation of Zn was influenced by the Zn con- centration in the growth medium and the number of growing seasons. The amounts of Zn concentrated in the root tissues might indicate A. victoriae as a good option for phytostabilization of soils contaminated by Zn. We rec- ommend that if A. victoriae is used for phytoextraction purposes, then it should be harvested at the end of the first growing season （fall） because at this time the concentra- tions of Zn in the above-ground parts will be maximal.

POLYMER-CLAY NANOCOMPOSITES:CHEMICAL GRAFTING OF POLYSTYRENE ONTO CLOISITE 20A

An account of the experiments on preparing polystyrene （PS） nanocomposites through grafting the polymer onto organophilic montmorillonite is reported. Cloisite 20A was reacted with vinyltrichlorosilane to replace the edge hydroxyl groups of the clay with a vinyl moiety. Because the reaction may liberate HC1, it was performed in the presence of sodium hydrogencarbonate to prevent the exchange of quaternary alkylammonium cations withH＋ ions. Only the silanol groups on the edge of the clay react with vinyltrichlorosilane. The radical polymerization of the product with styrene as a vinyl monomer leads to chemical grafting of PS onto the montmorillonite surface. The homopolymer formed during polymerization was separated from the grafted organoclay by Soxhlet extraction. Chemical grafting of the polymer onto Cloisite 20A was confirmed by infrared spectroscopy. The prepared nanocomposite materials and the grafted nano-particles were studied by XRD. Exfoliated nanocomposites may be obtained for 0.5 wt%-1wt% clay content. The nanocomposites were studied by thermogravimertic analysis （TGA） dynamic thermal analysis （DTA） and dynamic mechanical analysis （DMTA）.

Let （R, m） be a Cohen-Macaulay local ring of dimension d, C a canonical R-module and M an almost Cohen-Macaulay R-module of dimension n and of depth t. We prove that dim Extd-n R（M,C） = n and if n ≤ 3 then Extd-n（M,C） is an almost Cohen-Macaulay R-module. In particular, if n = d ≤ 3 then HomR（M, C） is an almost Cohen-Macaulay R-module. In addition, with some conditions, we show that Ext1R（M, C） is also almost Cohen-Macaulay. Finally, we study the vanishing Ext2R （Extd-n （M, C）, C） and Ext2R （Extd-n（M, C）, C）.

Synthesis, characterization and TL properties of SrSO_4:Dy,Tb nanocrystalline phosphor

SrSO4：Dy,Tb nanocrystalline with crystalline size in the range of 44-54 nm was prepared by co-precipitation method followed by thermal treatment and characterized by X-ray diffraction （XRD）, scanning electron microscopy （SEM）, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy （EDX） and UV-visible spectrometry. Our results provided direct evidence of incorporation of impurities into nanocrystalline SrSO4. The thermoluminescence （TL） properties of SrSOn：Dy,Tb nanocrystalline pellets irradiated with gamma rays at different doses were studied. The TL glow curve of SrSOa：Dy,Tb nanocrystalline pellets had a prominent peak at around 490 K and a small peak at around 430 K. The major peak in the TL glow curve was almost resolved from other peaks, which was analyzed using Chen＇s peak shape method to determine the TL kinetic parameters such as activation energy, E and kinetic order, b. The intensity of main dosimetric peak of SrSO4：Dy,Tb nanocrystalline pellets at around 490 K increased linearly with the increase in gamma dose. The TL response was linear in the range of 0.1-7 kGy. These properties made it a candidate as a dosimeter to be used for estimating the high dose of gamma rays.

Voltammetric determination of cysteamine at multiwalled carbon nanotubes paste electrode in the presence of isoproterenol as a mediator

A sensitive electrochemical sensor for the determination of cysteamine （CA） was developed using a modified multiwall carbon nanotube paste electrode （MWCNTPE） with isoproterenol （ISPT） as a mediator. This modified electrode showed very high electrocatalytic activity for the anodic oxidation of CA. Under the optimized conditions, the electrocatalytic peak current showed a linear relationship with CA concentration in the range of 0.3-450.0 μmol/L with a detection limit of 0.09 μmol/L CA. The modified electrode was used for the determination of CA in real samples such as urine and drug samples.
