Dominant pulse simulation of near fault g.ound motions

In th.s study, a new math.matical model is developed composed of two parts, including.h.rmonic and polynomial expressions for simulating.th. dominant velocity pulse of near fault g.ound motions. Based on a proposed velocity function, th. corresponding.expressions for th. g.ound acceleration and displacement time h.stories are also derived. Th. proposed model is th.n fitted using.some selected pulse-like near fault g.ound motions in th. Next g.neration Attenuation （Ng.） project library. Th. new model is not only simple in form but also simulates th. long.period portion of actual velocity near fault records with.a h.g. level of precision. It is sh.wn th.t th. proposed model-based elastic response spectra are compatible with.th. near fault records in th. neig.borh.od of th. prevailing.frequency of th. pulse. Th. results indicate th.t th. proposed model adequately simulates th. components of th. time h.stories. Finally, th. energ. of th. proposed pulse was compared with.th. energ. of th. actual record to confirm th. compatibility.

Influence of bed h.terog.neity and h.bitat type on macroinvertebrate uptake in peri-urban streams

Th. role of g.omorph.c structure, referred to as ph.sical h.terog.neity, and its influence upon th. colonization of h.bitat by macroinvertebrates was analysed in th. peri-urban, Twin Streams Catch.ent, in West Auckland, New Zealand. Using.a cross-scalar approach. 4 riffle-run assemblag.s were analysed in each.of 2 River Styles (a confined, low sinuosity, g.avel bed river and a partly confined, low sinuosity, bedrock, cobble, and g.avel bed river). Each.of th.se 8 locations comprised 2 distinct sampling.areas; th. upstream zone h.d a more h.terog.neous river bed with.a h.g. diversity of ph.sical features and flow, wh.lst th. downstream area h.d a more h.mog.neous structure. Microh.bitat features sampled at each.site included streambed material, bank marg.ns, fine g.ained org.nic debris, wood, and boulders. h.bitat mosaics and th.ir associated macroinvertebrate relationsh.ps followed a semi-predictable but interrupted pattern, supporting.th. view th.t river systems are a patch. discontinuum. h.mog.neous zones were more frequently ch.racterised by h.g.er proportions of Trich.ptera th.n h.terog.neous zones, wh.lst h.terog.neous zones were frequently ch.racterised by Plecoptera and Eph.meroptera. Diversity was maximised wh.n th. species pools from h.terog.neous and h.mog.neous sites were combined for any g.ven site. Functional h.bitats influenced macroinvertebrate assemblag.s in non-linear and complex ways. Wood and org.nic debris h.bitats were associated with.h.g. diversity, abundance, and sensitive species wh.reas streambed h.bitat was usually associated with.low diversity. A diverse rang. of ph.sical zones th.t approximates th. ’natural rang. of beh.viour’ for th. g.ven type of stream was considered to provide a more effective platform for reh.bilitation planning.th.n emph.sising.h.terog.neity of ph.sical structure in its own rig.t.

Aquatic biodiversity is being.lost at an unprecedented rate. One factor driving.th.s loss is increased turbidity, an en- vironmental stressor th.t can impose beh.vioral, morph.log.cal, and/or ph.siolog.cal costs on fish.s. h.re we describe th. be- h.vioral response of a widespread African cich.4}, Pseudocrenilabrus multicolor victoriae, to turbidity. We used a split-brood rearing.desig. to test if F1 offspring.reared in turbid water, orig.nating.from river （turbid） and swamp （clear） populations, beh.ve differently th.n full-sibs reared in clear water. We examined two facets of beh.vior：（1） beh.viors of fish.in full sib g.oups, in- eluding.activity level and social dynamics collected during.th. rearing.period; and （2） male ag.ressive beh.vior directed at poten- tial male competitors after fish.h.d reach.d maturity; th.s was done in an experimental set-up independent of th. rearing.aquaria. Reg.rdless of population of orig.n, fish.reared in turbid water were marg.nally less active and performed fewer social beh.viors th.n th.se reared in clear water. On th. oth.r h.nd, wh.n tested ag.inst a competitor in turbid water, males performed more ag. g.essive beh.viors, reg.rdless of population of orig.n or rearing.environment, Our results sug.est a plastic beh.vioral response to turbidity th.t may allow P. multicolor to persist over a rang. of turbidity levels in nature by decreasing.activity and g.neral social beh.viors and intensifying.reproductive beh.viors to ensure reproductive success [Current Zoolog. 58 （1）： 146-157, 2012].

Arabidopsis th.liana T-DNA Mutants Implicate g.UT g.nes in th. Biosynth.sis of Pectin and Xylan in Cell Walls and Seed Testa

g.lacturonosyltransferase 1 （g.UT1） is an α1,4-D-g.lacturonosyltransferase th.t transfers g.lacturonic acid from uridine 5＇-diph.sph.g.lacturonic acid onto th. pectic polysacch.ride h.mog.lacturonan （Sterling.et al., 2006）. Th. 25-member Arabidopsis th.liana g.UT1-related g.ne family encodes 15 g.UT and 10 g.UT-like （g.TL） proteins with. respectively, 56-84 and 42-53% amino acid sequence similarity to g.UT1. Previous ph.log.netic analyses of Atg.UTs indicated th.ee clades： A th.oug. C. A comparative ph.log.netic analysis of th. Arabidopsis, poplar and rice g.UT families h.s sub-classified th. g.UTs into seven clades： clade A-1 （g.UTs 1 to 3）; A-2 （g.UT4）; A-3 （g.UTs 5 and 6）; A-4 （g.UT7）; B-1 （g.UTs 8 and 9）; B-2 （g.UTs 10 and 11）; and clade C （g.UTs 12 to 15）. Th. Arabidopsis g.UTs h.ve a distribution comparable to th. poplar orth.log., with.th. exception of g.UT2, wh.ch.is absent in poplar. Rice, h.wever, h.s no orth.log. of g.UTs 2 and 12 and h.s multiple apparent orth.log. of g.UTs 1, 4, and 7 compared with.eith.rArabidopsis or poplar. Th. cell wall g.ycosyl residue compositions of 26 h.mozyg.us T-DNA insertion mutants for 13 of 15 Arabidopsis g.UTg.nes reveal sig.ificantly and reproducibly different cell walls in specific tissues of g.ut mutants 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, and 14 from th.t of wild-type Arabidopsis walls. Pectin and xylan polysacch.rides are affected by th. loss of g.UT function, as demonstrated by th. altered g.lacturonic acid, xylose, rh.mnose, g.lactose, and arabinose composition of distinct g.ut mutant walls. Th. wall g.ycosyl residue compositional ph.notypes observed among.th. g.ut mutants sug.est th.t at least six different biosynth.tic linkag.s in pectins and/or xylans are affected by th. lesions in th.se g.UTg.nes. Evidence is also presented to support a role for g.UT11 in seed mucilag. expansion and in seed wall and mucilag. composition.
