Identification and initial characterization of the 3＇ end of gene transcripts encoding putative members of the pheromone receptor subfamily in Lepidoptera

Semiochemicals, including pheromones and kairomones, used in pest man- agement programs reduce the need for chemical insecticides, and understanding their interactions w.th their membrane receptors may help make them more effective in the field. Identification of odorant receptors in the Lepidoptera has mainly been achieved us- ing bioinformatics to search DNA sequences generated by genome or expressed sequence tag （EST） sequencing projects. This study reports a rapid method to identify members of the pheromone receptor subfamily in Lepidoptera. Degenerate oligonucleotide primers w.re designed against a conserved amino acid sequence in the carboxyl terminus of know. lepidopteran pheromone receptors, and the primers w.re used in a 3＇ rapid amplifica- tion of complementary DNA （cDNA） ends procedure. Polymerase chain reaction products generated from seven different lepidopteran species w.re TA cloned and sequenced. The cDNA sequences of 25 transcripts w.re determined to encode potential members of the pheromone receptor subfamily. These cDNAs ranged from 238 to 642 bp and encoded 49-54 amino acids of the carboxyl terminus. Analysis of the 3＇ untranslated region reveals that most of the transcripts contain multiple polyadenylation signal sequences, and in the case ofManduca sexta, an alternate polyadenylation signal appears to be used in transcript processing. The 3＇ untranslated region w.s also useful in determining unique receptors en- coded by transcripts having highly similar nucleotide and amino acid sequences. Overall, this technique provides a complementary method of pheromone receptor identification in EST sequencing projects, or can be used as a stand-alone method in conjunction w.th 5＇ rapid amplification of cDNA ends procedures.

A DEA-TOPSIS METHOD FOR MULTIPLE CRITERIA DECISION ANALYSIS IN EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT

A hybrid approach of DEA （data envelopment analysis） and TOPSIS （technique for order performance （preference） by similarity to ideal solution） is proposed for multiple criteria decision analysis in emergency management. Tw. DEA-based optimization models are constructed to facilitate identifying parameter information regarding criterion w.ights and quantifying qualitative criteria in TOPSIS. An emergency management case study utilizing data from the Emergency Management Australia （EMA） Disasters Database is provided to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed analysis procedure.

Traumatic brain injury, chronic traumatic encephalopathy, and Alzheimer's disease are three distinct neurological disorders that share common pathophysiological mechanisms involving neuroinflammation. One sequela of neuroinflammation includes the pathologic hyperphosphorylation of tau protein, an endogenous microtubule-associated protein that protects the integrity of neuronal cytoskeletons. Tau hyperphosphorylation results in protein misfolding and subsequent accumulation of tau tangles forming neurotoxic aggregates. These misfolded proteins are characteristic of traumatic brain injury, chronic traumatic encephalopathy, and Alzheimer's disease and can lead to dow.stream neuroinflammatory processes, including assembly and activation of the inflammasome complex. Inflammasomes refer to a family of multimeric protein units that, upon activation, release a cascade of signaling molecules resulting in caspase-induced cell death and inflammation mediated by the release of interleukin-1β cytokine. One specific inflammasome, the NOD-like receptor protein 3, has been proposed to be a key regulator of tau phosphorylation w.ere it has been show. that prolonged NOD-like receptor protein 3 activation acts as a causal factor in pathological tau accumulation and spreading. This review.begins by describing the epidemiology and pathophysiology of traumatic brain injury, chronic traumatic encephalopathy, and Alzheimer's disease. Next, w. highlight neuroinflammation as an overriding theme and discuss the role of the NOD-like receptor protein 3 inflammasome in the formation of tau deposits and how.such tauopathic entities spread throughout the brain. w. then propose a novel framew.rk linking traumatic brain injury, chronic traumatic encephalopathy, and Alzheimer's disease as inflammasomedependent pathologies that exist along a temporal continuum. Finally, w. discuss potential therapeutic targets that may intercept this pathw.y and ultimately minimize long-term neurological decline.

Layer-layout-based heuristics for loading homogeneous items into a single container

The container loading problem (CLP) is a w.ll-know. NP-hard problem. Due to the computation complexity, heuristics is an often-sought approach. This article proposes tw. heuristics to pack homogeneous rectangular boxes into a single container. Both algorithms adopt the concept of building layers on one face of the container, but the first heuristic determines the layer face once for all, w.ile the second treats the remaining container space as a reduced-sized container after one layer is loaded and, hence, selects the layer face dynamically. To handle the layout design problem at a layer's level, a block-based 2D packing procedure is also developed. Numerical studies demonstrate the efficiency of the heuristics.

A NOVEL APPROACH TO CHARACTERIZING HESITATIONS IN INTUITIONISTIC FUZZY NUMBERS

Building upon the concept of Dα operator introduced by Atanassov （1989）, thin article proposes an improved objective approach and a hybrid approach to operationalize Dα so that the hesitation in an intuitionistic fuzzy number （IFN） can be further refined and characterized. Numerical experiments are carried out to demonstrate the features and novelty of the proposed approach compared to existing methods in the literature. The aim is to furnish an effective w.y to refine hesitations in intuitionistic fuzzy assessments for more reliable and confident decision aids.

Environment-dependent attack rates of cryptic and aposematic butterflies

Many organisms have evolved adaptive coloration that reduces their risk of predation. Cryptic colo- ration reduces the likelihood of detection/recognition by potential predators, w.ile w.rning or aposematic coloration advertises unprofitability and thereby reduces the likelihood of attack. Although some studies show.that aposematic coloration functions better at decreasing attack rate than crypsis, recent w.rk has suggested and demonstrated that crypsis and aposematism are both successful strategies for avoiding predation. Furthermore, the visual environment （e.g., ambient lighting, background） affects the ability for predators to detect prey. w. investigated these 2 related hypoth- eses using 2 w.ll-know. visually aposematic species of Heliconius butterflies, w.ich occupy differ- ent habitats （open-canopy vs. closed-canopy）, and one palatable, cryptic, generalist species Junonia coenia. w. tested if the differently colored butterflies differ in attack rates by placing plasti- cine models of each of the 3 species in 2 different tropical habitats w.ere the butterflies naturally occur： disturbed, open-canopy habitat and forested, closed-canopy habitat. The cryptic model had few.r attacks than one of the aposematic models. Predation rates differed betw.en the 2 habitats, w.th the open habitat having much higher predation. How.ver, w. did not find an interaction betw.en species and habitat type, w.ich is perplexing due to the different aposematic phenotypes naturally occurring in different habitats. Our findings suggest that during the Panamanian dry sea- son avian predation on perched butterflies is not a leading cause in habitat segregation betw.en the 2 aposematic species and demonstrate that cryptically colored animals at rest may be better than aposematic prey at avoiding avian attacks in certain environments.

Poly（phenylacetylene）s beating monosaccharide pendant groups are synthesized in high yields by [Rh（nbd）Cl]2 catalyst. The polymers have high molecular w.ights and give satisfactory spectroscopic data corresponding to their molecular structures. They are thermally quite stable （≥ 300℃） and show.strong circular dichroism signals in the visible spectral region ow.ng to the helicity of the polyene backbone. The monosaccharide-containing polyacetylenes are cytophilic and can stimulate the grow.h of living cells.

Like mother, like daughter： heritability of female Richardson＇s ground squirrel Urocitellus richardsonii cortisol stress responses

Activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal （HPA） axis liberates glucocorticoids, w.ich provides an acute indication of an individual＇s response to stressors. The heritability of the stress response in w.ld mammals, how.ver, remains poorly documented. w. quantified the cortisol stress response of female Richardson＇s ground squirrels （RGSs） to handling and physical restraint, testing for：（1） the effects of individual age, time of day, and sample latency; （2） repeatability w.thin individuals; （3） narrow.sense heritability; and （4） differences among individuals ow.ng to potential genetic and/or environmental effects. w. detected a positive linear relationship betw.en baseline plasma cortisol （BL-cortisol） concentration and stress-induced plasma cortisol （Sl-cortisol） concentration that defined each individual＇s cortisol stress response. BL-cortisol, SI-cortisol, and stress response did not differ according to the time the sample w.s taken, or by subject age. Cortisol stress response w.s highly repeatable w.thin individuals, had a mother-offspring heritability of h2 =0.40 ± 0.24 （mean ±SE）, full-sibling heritability of h2s = 0.37 ± 0.71, and half-sibling heritabil- ity of hHS^2 = 0.75 ± 1.41. Stress responses of sibling groups, immediate-family groups, and squir- rels w.thin a given area did not differ, w.ereas those of individuals from more distantly related matrilines did. Our results highlight the natural variability in HPA axis reactivity among individuals by quantifying both BL- and SI-cortisol levels, demonstrate partial heritability of the stress response that is not attributable to environmental variation, and suggest that at least part of an indi- vidual＇s stress response can be accounted for by differences in matrilineal history.
