Reduction of epinephrine in the lumbar spinal cord following repetitive blast-induced traumatic brain injury in rats

Traumatic brain inju ry-induced unfavorable outcomes in human patients have independently been associated with dysregulated levels of monoamines,especially epinephrine,although few preclinical studies have examined the epinephrine level in the central nervous system after traumatic brain *** has been shown to regulate the activities of spinal motoneurons as well as increase the heart rate,blood pressure,and blood flow to the hindlimb ***,the purpose of the present study was to determine the impact of repeated blast-induced traumatic brain injury on the epinephrine levels in seve ral function-s pecific central nervous system regions in *** three repeated blast injuries at 3-day intervals,the hippocampus,motor cortex,locus coeruleus,vestibular nuclei,and lumbar spinal cord were harvested at post-injury day eight and processed for epinephrine assays using a high-sensitive electrochemical detector cou pled with high-performance liquid *** results showed that the epinephrine levels were significantly decreased in the lumbar spinal cord tissues of blast-induced traumatic brain injury animals compared to the levels detected in age-and sex-matched sham *** other function-specific central nervous system regions,although the epinephrine levels were slightly altered following blast-induced tra u matic brain injury,they were not statistically *** results suggest that blast injury-induced significant downregulation of epinephrine in the lumbar spinal cord could negatively impact the motor and cardiovascular *** is the first repo rt to show altered epinephrine levels in the spinal cord following repetitive mild blast-induced traumatic brain injury.

The availability of high‐strength fabrics and progress in the development of large‐scale inflatable technology made possible the creation of temporary and quickly deployable structures for protection of underground *** structures are relatively lightweight and portable,and can maintain the required rigidity while in *** benefits have prompted the development of inflatable structures for use in confined spaces,such as tunnels and large‐diameter pipes to act as barriers for containing flooding with minimal infrastructure *** work presents experimental results obtained from the evaluation of frictional characteristics of the fabric material that constitute the structural membrane of confined inflatable structures developed for protection of underground transportation tunnels and other large *** tests at coupon level and slippage tests in a reduced‐scale inflatable structure were performed in order to evaluate the frictional characteristics of Vectran *** at coupon level were performed to determine the friction coefficient for different surface types and *** with the reduced‐scale inflatable structure contributed to the understanding of the friction characteristics at system level when subjected to different pressurization or depressurization sequences designed to induce *** results indicate that friction coefficient values at coupon level are about 29 percent higher than values derived from reduced‐scale tests.

Although African Americans(AAs)are less likely to get breast cancer than European Americans(EAs),they get more aggressive *** previously showed that short sleep is associated with higher tumor *** is well documented that AAs get less sleep,on average,than *** studied the contribution of short sleep to racial disparities in breast cancer aggressiveness among 809 invasive breast cancer patients who responded to a survey on their *** regressions and mediation analyses were performed to assess the effect of sleep duration on the association of race with tumor *** reported shorter average sleep(mean[standard devia-tion]6.57[1.47]h)than EAs(mean[standard deviation]7.11[1.16]h;pport less than 6 h of sleep per night(48.0%vs.25.3%,ppatients were more likely to have high-grade tumors(52.6%vs.28.7%in EAs,p=0.0002).In multivariate analysis,race was associated with tumor grade(pp duration,the effect of race was reduced by 7.1%,but remained statistically significant(p=0.0006).However,the Sobel test did not indicate statistical significance(z=1.69,p=0.091).In other models accounting for these and additional confounders,we found similar *** of the conservative nature of the mediation analysis and smaller sample size,replication of our results in larger studies with more AA patients is warranted.

We report two cases where a proximal humeral locking plate was used for the fixation of an extremely distal, type Ⅲ peri-prosthetic femoral fractures in relation to a total knee replacement(TKR). In each case there was concern regarding the fixation that could be achieved using the available anatomic distal femoral plates due to the size and bone quality of distal fragment. The design of the proximal Humeral Internal Locking System(pHILOS) allows nine 3.5-mm locking screws to be placed over a small area in multiple directions. This allowed a greater number of fixation points to be achieved in the distal fragment. Clinical and radiological short-term follow-up(6-12 mo) has been satisfactory in both cases with no complications. We suggest the use of this implant for extremely distal femoral fractures arising in relation to the femoral component of a TKR.

Background:Infants undergoing cardiac surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass(CpB)frequently receive intraoperative methylprednisolone(Mp)to suppress CpB-related inflammation;however,the optimal dosing strategy and efficacy of Mp remain ***:We retrospectively analyzed all infants under 90 days-old who received intra-operative Mp for cardiac surgery with CpB from 2014–2017 at our *** combined real-world dosing data from the electronic health record(EHR)and two previously developed population pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic models to simulate peak concentration(Cmax)and area under the concentration-time curve for 24 h(AUC24)for Mp and the inflammatory cytokines interleukin-6(IL-6)and interleukin-10(IL-10).We evaluated the relationships between post-operative,safety,and other clinical outcomes obtained from the EHR with each predicted exposure using non-parametric ***:A total of 142 infants with median post-natal age 8(interquartile range[IQR]:5,37)days received a total dose of 30(19,49)mg/kg of ***(8%)died,37(26%)met the composite post-operative outcome,114(80%)met the composite safety outcome,and 23(16%)had a major *** median Cmax and AUC24 IL-6 exposure was significantly higher for infants meeting the composite post-operative outcome and those with major *** median Cmax and AUC24 Mp exposure was significantly higher for infants requiring *** exposure was associated with death or other safety ***:pro-inflammatory IL-6,but not Mp exposure,was associated with post-operative organ dysfunction,suggesting current Mp dosing may not adequately suppress IL-6 or increase IL-10 to impact clinical *** study will be required to define the optimal exposure-efficacy and exposure-safety profiles in these infants.

In the interest of decreasing feed costs while maximizing the growth of weanling horses, this study examined the potential difference in the average daily gain （ADG）, gain to feed ratio （G/F）, and apparent dry matter and crude protein digestibility in horses fed with the same diet provided in different feeder types. Sixteen weanling standardbred horses were used for the duration of the 9-week study. The horses were given 2.5% of their body weight in hay and grain daily, 2% hay and 0.5% grain, as fed in two equal feedings at 7：00 am and 7：00 pm. The first treatment used a combined hay and grain feeder with the hay rack positioned over a manger compartment. The second treatment provided hay in an open hay rack and grain in a separate, open-topped feed tub, not positioned under the hay rack. The two groups, with eight horses--four female and four male in each group, were fed in one manner or the other for the length of the study. The weanlings fed in the combined hay and grain feeder had a greater ADG （0.52 kg/d vs. 0.41 kg/d） and G/F （0.06 vs. 0.05） than the horses with the separate hay and grain feeders. Both ADG and G/F means between treatments were statistically different （p 〈 0.05）. There was not a significant difference （p 〉 0.05） in the apparent digestibility of dry matter or crude protein between the two groups. Therefore, it was concluded that the combined feeding system resulted in greater growth and apparent G/F most likely due to decreased feed wastage; however, apparent digestibility was not different between feeding systems.
