Fungi are an essential component of the *** play an integral role in the decomposition of leaf litter and return nutrients to the ecosystem through nutrient *** are considered as the“key players”in leaf litter decomposition,because of their ability to produce a wide range of extracellular ***-related changes of fungal communities during leaf litter decomposition have been relatively ***,it has not been established how the tree species,tree phylogeny,and leaf litter chemistry influence fungal communities during *** direct observations and a culturing approach,this study compiles fungi found in freshly collected leaf litter from five phylogenetically related,native tree species in Taiwan:Celtis formosana(CF),Ficus ampelas(FA),Ficus septica(FS),Macaranga tanarius(MT),and Morus australis(MA).We investigated(i)the effects of tree species(including tree phylogeny)and leaf litter chemistry on fungal community succession,and(ii)specific patterns of fungal succession(including diversity and taxonomic community assembly)on decomposing leaf litter across the selected tree *** hypothesized that host species and leaf litter chemistry significantly affect fungal community succession.A total of 1325 leaves(CF:275,FA:275,FS:275,MT:275 and MA:225)were collected and 236 fungal taxa were recorded(CF:48,FA:46,FS:64,MT:42 and MA:36).Tree species relationships had variable associations on the fungal communities,as even closely related tree species had strongly differing communities during decomposition.A high number of species were unique to a single tree species and may indicate‘host-specificity’to a particular leaf *** overlap of microfungal species in pair wise comparisons of tree species was low(7–16%),and only 1–2%of microfungal species were observed in leaves of all tree *** percentage of occurrences of fungal communities using Hierarchical Cluster Analyses(HCA)showed that there were at least f

Using GIS and Kriging to Analyze the Spatial Distributions of the Health Risk of Indoor Air Pollution

Kriging is an interpolation technique that is used to estimate a variable at an unmeasured location from observed values at nearer locations. In this study, it is used to analyze the spatial distributions of the health risk of indoor air pollution. The study case is an air-conditioned office building that has 16 floors, located in Taipei, Taiwan. The Kriging method is used in drawing health risk maps on the basis of limited sample points and facilitates investigating the possible source of pollution.

Although LCA is normally not focused on the local impacts for a product system, but when LCA is applied to other environmental system analysis tools the local impact may be important, such as the Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA). In this study, the regionalization of LCA refers to the conversion of the results from site-generic or site-dependent LCIAs into smaller spatial units. The regionalization of LCAs is achieved by a geographic information system (GIS). GIS can easily allocate the impact into smaller spatial units through the overlay analysis of fate, exposure and effect layers.

Second-look arthroscopic evaluation of the articular cartilage after primary single-bundle and double-bundle anterior cruciate ligament reconstructions

Background Several reports have shown the progression of articular cartilage degeneration after anterior cruciate ligament （ACL） reconstruction. No report has been published about the cartilage comparing changes after single-bundle （SB） and double-bundle （DI3） ACL reconstructions. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the articular cartilage changes after SB and DB ACL reconstructions by second-look arthroscopy. Methods Ninety-nine patients who received arthroscopic ACL reconstruction were retrospectively reviewed at an average of 14 months after reconstruction, 58 patients underwent SB ACL reconstruction and 41 patients underwent DB ACL reconstruction. Hamstring tendon autografts were used in all patients. Second-look arthroscopy was done in conjunction with the tibial staple fixation removal at least one year after the initial ACL reconstruction. Arthroscopic evaluation and grading of the articular cartilage degeneration for all patients were performed at the initial ACL reconstruction, and at the second-look arthroscopy. Results The average cartilage degeneration at the patellofemoral joint （PFJ） was found significantly worsened after both SB and DB ACL reconstructions. This worsening were not seen at medial tibiofemoral joint （TFJ） and lateral TFJ. Grade II cartilage damage was the most common. At second-look arthroscopy, the average patellar cartilage degeneration was 1.14±0.14 （at first look 0.52±0.11） for the SB group, and 1.22±0.15 （at first look 0.56±0.12） for the DB group. The average trochlear cartilage degeneration was 1.05±0.16 （at fist look 0.10±0.06） and 0.66±0.17 （at fist look 0.17±0.09）, respectively. The average patellar cartilage degeneration showed no significant difference in both groups. However, the average trochlea cartilage degeneration in DB group was significantly less than in SB group. Proliferation and apoptosis property of mesenchymal stem cells derived from peripheral blood under the culture conditions of hypoxia and serum deprivation

Background The proliferation and apoptosis property of mesenchymal stem cells derived from peripheral blood （PB-MSCs） were investigated under hypoxia and serum deprivation conditions in vitro so as to evaluate the feasibility for autologous PB-MSCs applications in cartilage repair. Methods MSCs were mobilized into peripheral blood by granulocyte colony stimulating factor （G-CSF） and AMD3100. The blood samples were collected from central ear artery of rabbits. Adhered cells were obtained by erythrocyte lysis buffer and identified as MSCs by adherence to plastic, spindle shaped morphology, specific surface markers, differentiation abilities into osteoblasts, adipocytes and chondroblasts in vitro under appropriate conditions. MSCs were cultured in four groups at different oxygen tension （20% 02 and 2% O2）, with or without 10% fetal bovine serum （FBS） conditions： 20% 02 and 10% FBS complete medium （normal medium, N）, 20% 02 and serum deprivation medium （D）, 2% 02 and 10% FBS complete medium （hypoxia, H）, 2% 02 and serum deprivation （HD）. Cell proliferation was determined by CCK-8 assay. Apoptosis was detected by Annexin V/PI and terminal deoxynucleotide transferase dUTP nick end labeling （TUNEL） staining. Results Spindle-shaped adherent cells were effectively mobilized from peripheral blood by a combined administration of G-CSF plus AMD3100. These cells showed typical fibroblast-like phenotype similar to MSCs from bone marrow （BM-MSCs）, and expressed a high level of typical MSCs markers CD29 and CD44, but lacked in the expression of hematopoietic markers CD45 and major histocompatibility complex Class II （MHC II）. They could also differentiate into osteoblasts, adipocytes and chondroblasts in vitro under appropriate conditions. No significant morphological differences were found among the four groups. In preparation for the Fourth International Workshop on Tropical Cyclone Landfall Processes(IWTCLP-IV), a summary of recent research studies and the forecasting challenges of tropical cyclone(TC) rainfall has been prepared. The extreme rainfall accumulations in Hurricane Harvey(2017) near Houston, Texas and Typhoon Damrey(2017) in southern Vietnam are examples of the TC rainfall forecasting challenges. Some progress is being made in understanding the internal rainfall dynamics via case studies. Environmental effects such as vertical wind shear and terrain-induced rainfall have been studied, as well as the rainfall relationships with TC intensity and structure. Numerical model predictions of TC-related rainfall have been improved via data assimilation, microphysics representation, improved resolution, and ensemble quantitative precipitation forecast techniques. Some attempts have been made to improve the verification techniques as well. A basic forecast challenge for TC-related rainfall is monitoring the existing rainfall distribution via satellite or coastal radars, or from over-land rain gauges. Forecasters also need assistance in understanding how seemingly similar landfall locations relative to the TC experience different rainfall distributions. In addition, forecasters must cope with anomalous TC activity and landfall distributions in response to various environmental effects.
