A comparison of outcomes between laparoscopic and robotic appendectomy among ACS-NSQIP hospitals

Joint effect of pre-operative anemia and perioperative blood transfusion on outcomes of colon-cancer patients undergoing colectomy

Forest biodiversity, relationships to structural and functional attributes, and stability in New England forests

Background： Forest biodiversity is the foundation of many ecosystem services, and the effect of biodiversity on ecosystem functioning and processes （BEF） has been a central issue in biodiversity studies. Although many hypotheses have been developed to interpret global gradients of biodiversity, there has not been complete agreement on mechanisms controlling biodiversity patterns and distributions. Differences may be due to limited observation data and inconsistencies of spatial scales in analysis. Methods： In this study, we take advantage of USDA Forest Service forest inventory and analysis （FIA） data for exploring regional forest biodiversity and BEF in New England forests. The FIA data provide detailed information of sampled plots and trees for the region, including 6000 FIA plots and more than 33,000 individual trees. Biodiversity models were used to analyze the data. Results： Tree species diversity increases from the north to the south at a rate about 2-3 species per latitudinal degree. Tree species diversity is better predicted by tree height than forest age or biomass. Very different distribution patterns of two common maple species, sugar maple （Acer sdcchorum） and red maple （Acer rubrum）, highlight the vulnerability of sugar maple and its potential replacement by red maple on New England landscapes. Red maple generally already outperforms sugar maple, and will likely and continuously benefit from a changing climate in New England. Conclusions： We conclude that forest structure （height） and resources （biomass） are more likely foundational characteristics supporting biodiversity rather than biodiversity determining forest productivity and/or biomass. The potential replacement of red maple for sugar maple in the New England areas could affect biodiversity and stability of forest ecosystem functioning because sugar maple plays important ecological roles distinct from red maple that are beneficial to other tree species in northern hardwood forests. Hybrid therapy for Helicobacter pylori infection:A systemic review and meta-analysis

AIM: To compare the effectiveness of hybrid therapy with other recommended regimens using ***: Bibliographical searches for randomized trials comparing hybrid and other therapies were performed in Pubmed, the Cochrane Library and relevant congresses up to February 2015 using the following keywords(all fields and/or me SH):("Helicobacter pylori " or "H. pylori") and("hybrid therapy" or "sequential-concomitant therapy"). metaanalyses were performed with Cochrane Review manager 5.1. The random effect model proposed by Der Simonian and Laird and the mantel-Haenszel method were used to estimate the pooled relative risk and 95%CI of the efficacy outcomes between hybrid therapy and other eradication therapies. RESULTS: Eight studies(2516 subjects) met entry criteria. The antimicrobial resistance in the study groups ranged from 6.9% to 23.5%. The mean cure rates of hybrid therapy by intention-to-treat(ITT) and perprotocol analyses were 88.5%(n = 1207; range: 80.0% to 97.4%) and 93.3%(n = 1109; range: 85.7% to99.1%), respectively. meta-analysis showed there was no significant difference in ITT eradication rate between hybrid and sequential therapy(relative risk: 1.01; 95%CI: 0.92-1.11). Subgroup analysis revealed hybrid therapy was more effective than sequential therapy in the non-Italian populations(95%CI: 1.01-1.18) and was only less effective in one, Italian population(95%CI: 0.83-0.98). There was no significant difference in eradication rate between hybrid therapy and concomitant therapy(95%CI: 0.93-1.02). No head-tohead comparisons of hybrid therapy and standard triple therapy or bismuth quadruple therapy were found. However, a multicenter, randomized trial showed that reverse hybrid therapy was superior to standard triple therapy(95.5% vs 88.6% ITT; P = 0.011).CONCLUSION: Hybrid therapy appears to be an effective, safe, and well-tolerated treatment for H. pylori infection in the era of increasing antibiotic resistance.

Comparison of D-flip-flops and D-latches:influence on SET susceptibility of the clock distribution network

As technology scales down, clock distribution networks(CDNs) in integrated circuits(ICs) are becoming increasingly sensitive to single-event transients(SETs).The SET occurring in the CDN can even lead to failure of the entire circuit system. Understanding the factors that influence the SET sensitivity of the CDN is crucial to achieving radiation hardening of the CDN and realizing the design of highly reliable ICs. In this paper, the influences of different sequential elements(D-flip-flops and D-latches, the two most commonly used sequential elements in modern synchronous digital systems) on the SET susceptibility of the CDN were quantitatively studied. Electrical simulation and heavy ion experiment results reveal that the CDN-SET-induced incorrect latching is much more likely to occur in DFF and DFF-based designs. This can supply guidelines for the design of IC with high reliability.

The infuence of rare earth(RE)elements on austenite–ferrite phase transformation in Fe–0.14%C alloy has been investigated by in situ observing the nucleation,growth and morphology of ferrite using high temperature laser scanning confocal microscopy,and controlled atmosphere decarburization *** is found that under the low-oxygen condition in steel,trace RE addition can signifcantly infuence the nucleation,morphology and growth of ferrite in Fe–0.14%C alloy by the combined efects of RE slowing down the carbon difusion and decreasing grain boundary energy by segregating at grain *** research provides evidences of adjusting the phase transformation and improving the mechanical properties of steels by RE addition.
