the Jamaica Bay ecosystem is a dichotomy. It encompasses more than 12,000 acres of coastal estuarine marshes and an ecological diversity rivaling any coastal environment in the world. It is considerably altered, and is affected by a variety of ecological insults directly related to the fact that more than 14 million people live in its vicinity. Environmental protection institutions responded to the challenge of protecting the bay, surrounding wetlands and recreational benefits by addressing the increasing load of contaminants into the ecosystem. Billions of dollars have been spent during the past five decades on restoration attempts, including upgrading wastewater treatment plantsand the closure of three major sanitary landfills. Even with the curtailment of untreated wastewater release and ending periodic dredging and filling programs, all activities that are necessary processes in maintaining an urban harbor, the Jamaica Bay ecosystem has reached a point where many believe it to be unrecoverable, requiring massive infusions of restoration dollars. this categorization has been perpetuated based on questionable data （the ＂myths＂） that, when investigated in rigorous scientific detail, prove to be unsubstantiated. In this paper, the origin of these myths and the scientific investigation that dispel them are discussed.

Fungi provide ecological and environmental services to humans, as well as health and nutritional benefits, and are vital to numerousindustries. Fermented food and beverage products from fungi are circulating in the market, generating billions of ***, the highest potential monetary value of fungi is their role in blue carbon trading because of their ability to sequesterlarge amounts of carbon in the soil. there are no conclusive estimates available on the global monetary value of fungi, primarilybecause there are limited data for extrapolation. this study outlines the contribution of fungi to the global economy and providesa first attempt at quantifying the global monetary value of fungi. Our estimate of USD 54.57 trillion provides a starting point thatcan be analysed and improved, highlighting the significance of fungi and providing an appreciation of their value. this paperidentifies the different economically valuable products and services provided by fungi. By giving a monetary value to all importantfungal products, services, and industrial applications underscores their significance in biodiversity and conservation. Furthermore,if the value of fungi is well established, they will be considered in future policies for effective ecosystem management.

Soft structural textiles,or softgoods,are used within the space industry for inflatable habitats,parachutes and decelerator *** the safety and structural integrity of these systems occurs through structural health monitoring systems(SHM),which integrate non-invasive/non-destructive testing methods to detect,diagnose,and locate ***/load monitoring of these systems is limited while utilizing traditional strain gauges as these gauges are typically stiff,operate at low temperatures,and fail when subjected to high strain that is a result of high loading classifying them as unsuitable for SHM of soft structural *** this work,a capacitance based strain gauge(CSG)was fabricated via aerosol jet printing(AJP)using silver nanoparticle ink on a flexible polymer *** strain gauges were then compared to a commercially available high elongation resistance-based strain gauge(HE-RSG)for their ability to monitor strained Kevlar straps having a 26.7 kN(6 klbf)***,static and cyclic loads were used to characterize both types of strain monitoring *** CSGs demonstrated superior performance for high elongation strain measurements when compared to commonly used HE-RSGs,and were observed to operate with a gauge factor of 5.2 when the electrode arrangement was perpendicular to the direction of strain.

Background:Hepato-pancreatico-biliary(HPB)patients experience significant risk of preoperative *** assessing preventative prehabilitation in HPB populations are *** systematic review and meta-analysis evaluates outcomes for HPB patients treated with exercise *** sources:A comprehensive search of MEDLINE(via Ovid),Embase(Ovid),Scopus,Web of Science Core Collection,Cochrane Library(Wiley),Pro Quest Dissertations,theses Global,and Google Scholar was conducted with review and extraction following PRISMA *** studies evaluated more than 5 adult HPB patients undergoing≥7-day exercise *** primary outcome was postoperative length of stay(LOS);secondary outcomes included complications,mortality,physical performance,and quality of ***:We evaluated 1778 titles and abstracts and selected 6(randomized controlled trial,n=3;prospective cohort,n=1;retrospective cohort,n=2)that included 957 *** those,536 patients(56.0%)underwent exercise prehabilitation and 421(44.0%)received standard *** in both groups were similar with regards to important demographic *** was associated with a 5.20-day LOS reduction(P=0.03);when outliers were removed,LOS reduction decreased to 1.85 days and was non-statistically significant(P=0.34).Postoperative complications(OR=0.70;95%CI:0.39 to 1.26;P=0.23),major complications(OR=0.83;95%CI:0.60 to 1.14;P=0.24),and mortality(OR=0.67;95%CI:0.17 to 2.70;P=0.57)were *** was associated with improved strength,cardiopulmonary function,quality of life,and alleviated ***:Exercise prehabilitation may reduce LOS and morbidity following HPB *** with well-defined exercise regimens are needed to optimize exercise prehabilitation outcomes.

Phytophthora capsici is a phytopathogen that causes a destructive pepper blight that is extremely difficult to control. Using a fungicide application against the disease is costly and relatively ineffective and there is also a huge environmental concern about the use of such chemicals. the genus trichoderma has been known to have a potential biocontrol issue. In this paper we investigate the mechanism for causing the infection of t. asperellum against P. capsici. tnchoderma sp. （isolate CGMCC 6422） was developed to have a strong antagonistic action against hyphae of P. capsici through screening tests. the strain was identified as t. asperellum through using a combination of morphological characteristics and molecular data. t. asperellum was able to collapse the mycelium of the colonies of the pathogen through dual culture tests by breaking down the pathogenic hyphae into fragments. the scanning electron microscope showed that the hyphae of t. aspere/lum surrounded and penetrated the pathogens hyphae, resulting in hyphal collapse. the results show that seven days after inoculation, the hyphae of the pathogen were completely degraded in a dual culture. t. asperel/um was also able to enter the P. capsici oospores through using oogonia and then developed hyphae and produced conidia, leading to the disintegration of the oogonia and oospores. Seven days after inoculation, an average 10.8% of the oospores were infected, but at this stage, the structures of oospores were still intact. Subsequently, the number of infected oospores increased and the oospores started to collapse. Forty-two days after inoculation, almost all the oospores were infected, with 9.3% of the structures of the oospores being intact and 90.7% of the oospores having collapsed.

Photons are emitted during brain activity and when applied externally alter its functional connectivity during the resting state. In the present study we applied constant or time varying light (~10,000 lux) stimuli to one side of the skull and measured by photomultiplier tubes the photon density emitted from the opposite side of the skull along its two horizontal planes. Global quantitative electroencephalographic activity (QEEG) was recorded simultaneously. Reliable increases of ~2.5 × 10-11 W· m-2 during either constant or specific flash frequencies between 3 and 7 Hz as well as enhanced QEEG power in the theta and low beta range were measured. According to source localization by Low Resolution Electromagnetic tomography (LOREtA) the right parahippocampal region was particularly enhanced. Calculations employing known quantitative values for permeability and permittivity of brain tissue were consistent with this frequency band. Estimated concentrations of protons from hydronium ions indicated a Grotthuss chain-like process for moving photon energy through the cerebral medium may have mediated the distance-dependent latency. the results suggest that external light is transmitted through cerebral tissue, can be measured externally, and significantly affects functional connectivity. the findings support the conclusions of Starck et al. (World Journal Neuroscience, 2012).

the effects of Roundup WeatherMax® and EngameTM formulations of glyphosate were investigated on the cotyledons of glyphosate resistant (GR) and glyphosate sensitive (GS) isogenic cotton cultivars. EngameTM is a mixture of glyphosate and 1-aminomethanamide dihydrogen tetraoxosulfate (AMADS). Fully expanded cotton cotyledons treated with EngameTM or AMADS developed surface lesions within 2 hours after treatment whereas surfactant-treated control or WeatherMax®-treated tissues did not develop lesions. The EngameTM and AMADS damage appeared as depressions which were confirmed by scanning electron microscopy. Light micrographs of cross sectionstyle="font-family:Verdana;"> through the depressions revealed collapsed and compressed epidermal and mesophyll cells with congealed cytoplasmic contents in the palisade and spongy mesophyll cells. Changes to photosynthetic electron transport were evident at 4 hours after treatment (HAt) in all treatments as revealed by chlorophyll A fluorescence.
