AIM To assess nutritional recovery,particularly regarding feeding jejunostomy tube(FJT)utilization,following upper gastrointestinal resection for malignancy. METHODS A retrospective review was performed of a prospectively-maintained database of adult patients who underwent esophagectomy or gastrectomy(subtotal or total)for cancer with curative intent,from January 2001 to June 2014. Patient demographics,the approach to esophagectomy,the extent of gastrectomy,FJT placement and utilization at discharge,administration of parenteral nutrition(PN),and complications were evaluated. All patients were followed for at least ninety days or until *** The 287 patients underwent upper GI resection,comprised of 182 esophagectomy(n=107 transhiatal,58.7%; n=56 Ivor-Lewis,30.7%)and 105 gastrectomy [n=63 subtotal(SG),60.0%; n=42 total(TG),40.0%]. 181 of 182 esophagectomy patients underwent FJT,compared with 47 of 105 gastrectomy patients(99.5% vs 44.8%,P < 0.0001),of whom most had undergone TG(n=39,92.9% vs n=8 SG,12.9%,P < 0.0001). Median length of stay was similar between esophagectomy and gastrectomy groups(14.7 d vs 17.1 d,P=0.076). Upon discharge,87 esophagectomy patients(48.1%)were taking enteral feeds,with 53(29.3%)fully and 34(18.8%)partially dependent. Meanwhile,20 of 39 TG patients(51.3%)were either fully(n=3,7.7%)or partially(n=17,43.6%)dependent on tube feeds,compared with 5 of 8 SG patients(10.6%),all of whom were partially dependent. Gastrectomy patients were significantly less likely to be fully dependent on tube feeds at discharge compared to esophagectomy patients(6.4% vs 29.3%,P=0.0006). PN was administered despite FJT placement more often following gastrectomy than esophagectomy(n=11,23.4% vs n=7,3.9%,P=0.0001). FJT-specific complications requiring reoperation within 30 d of resection occurred more commonly in the gastrectomy group(n=6),all after TG,compared to 1 esophagectomy patient(12.8% vs 0.6%,P=0.0003). Strawberries are rich in polyphenols which impart health benefits when metabolized by the gut microbiome,including anti-inflammatory,neuroprotective,and antiproliferative *** addition,polyphenolic anthocyanins contribute to the attractive color of strawberry ***,the genetic basis of polyphenol biosynthesis has not been extensively studied in *** this investigation,ripe fruits from three cultivated strawberry populations were characterized for polyphenol content using HPLC-DAD-MSn and genotyped using the iStraw35k *** and QTL analyses identified genetic loci controlling polyphenol *** were identified on four chromosomes for pelargonidin-3-O-malonylglucoside,pelargonidin-3-O-acetylglucoside,cinnamoyl glucose,and ellagic acid deoxyhexoside ***/absence of ellagic acid deoxyhexoside and pelargonidin-3-O-malonylglucoside was found to be under the control of major gene loci on LG1X2 and LG6b,respectively,on the F.×ananassa linkage *** of gene predictions in the *** reference genome sequence identified a single candidate gene for ellagic acid deoxyhexoside biosynthesis,while seven malonyltransferase genes were identified as candidates for pelargonidin-3-O-malonylglucoside *** malonyltransferase genes were identified in the F.×ananassa‘Camarosa’genome sequence but the candidate for ellagic acid deoxyhexoside biosynthesis was absent from the‘Camarosa’*** study demonstrated that polyphenol biosynthesis in strawberry is,in some cases,under simple genetic control,supporting previous observations of the presence or absence of these compounds in strawberry *** has also shed light on the mechanisms controlling polyphenol biosynthesis and enhanced the knowledge of these biosynthesis pathways in *** above findings will facilitate breeding for strawberries enriched in compounds with beneficial health effects.

CONSPECTUS:Organic−inorganic halide perovskite photovoltaics(PVs)only a decade-old fieldhave reached impressive power conversion efficiencies(PCEs)and passed industrial stability requirements(IEC 61215:2016 Damp Heat and Humidity Freeze tests),solidifying their status among candidates for next generation *** the various perovskite PV technologies,all-perovskite tandem solar cells(PTSCs)are frontrunners for *** unite a narrow-bandgap(NBG;Eg≈1.2 eV)perovskite back cell with a wide-bandgap(WBG;Eg≈1.7−1.9 eV)perovskite front *** their nascency,PTSCs have achieved certified PCEs of 24.8%and 24.2%for small-area(0.049 cm^2)and large-area devices(1.041 cm2),*** further advances in materials development,PTSCs are capable of moving beyond the PCE limits of single-junction cells due to reduced thermalization losses and improved utilization of the solar *** contrast,the PCE of single-junction perovskite devices is already approaching its saturation level,which is already very close to the device’s Shockley−Queisser limit for a bandgap of around 1.55 *** tandem architecture,thus,provides the most viable path forward to further exploiting the potential of perovskite solar ***,PTSC technology faces a set of challenges distinct from those in perovskite single-junction devices because(i)NBG perovskitestypically achieved by Pb−Sn alloyingare prone to oxidation(Sn^2+to Sn^4+),which results in a high density of Sn vacancies that degrade the optoelectronic performance of NBG perovskite films,(ii)practically complete photon absorption and charge extraction require thick,NBG perovskite films having long carrier diffusion lengths,and(iii)WBG perovskites with high Br/(I+Br)ratio experience large voltage losses and inferior light stability due to surface trap states and phase *** this Account,we discuss how to manage these considerations and maximize the power output in PTSCs via light *** then rev
