Merits and limitations of TiO2-based photocatalytic pretreatment of soils impacted by crude oil for expediting bioremediation

heavy hydrocarbons （hhCs） in soils impacted by crude oil spills are generally recalcitrant to biodegrada- tion due to their low bioavailability and complex chemical structure. In this study, soils were pretreated with varying concentrations of ultraviolet radiation A （UVA） or ultraviolet radiation C （UVC） activated titanium dioxide （TiO2）（1%-5%） under varying moisture conditions （0%- 300% water holding capacity （WhC）） to enhance biodegradation of hCCs and shorten remediation time- frames. We demonstrate that pretreatment of impacted soils with UVC-activated TiO2 in soil slurries could enhance bioremediation of hhCs. Total petroleum hydrocarbon （TPh） removal after 24 h exposure to UVC （254 nm and 4.8 mW/cm2） was （19.15：1.6）% in slurries with 300% WhC and 5 wt-% TiO2. TPh removal was non-selective in the C15-C36 range and increased with moisture content and TiO2 concentration. In a 10-d bioremediation test, TPh removal in treated soil increased to （26.05：0.9）%, compared to （15.45：0.8）% for controls without photo- catalytic pre-treatment. Enhanced biodegradation was also confirmed by respirometry. This suggests that addition of UVC-activated TiO2 to soil slurries can transform recalcitrant hydrocarbons into more bioavailable and biodegradable byproducts and increase the rate of subsequent biodegradation. however, similar results were not observed for soils pretreated with UVA activated TiO2. This suggests that activation of TiO2 by sunlight and direct addition of TiO2 to unsaturated soils within landfarming setting may not be a feasible approach. Nevertheless, less than 1% of UVA （7.5 mW/cm2） or UVC （1.4 mW/cm2） penetrated beyond 0.3 cm soil depth, indicating that limited light penetration through soil would hinder the ability of TiO2 to enhance soil bioremediation under land farming conditions.

The europium heptadentate coordinatively unsaturated (Eu(III)) and the terbium (Tb(III)) 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane (cyclen) complexes 1 and 2 were used in conjunction with ligand 3 (1,3,5-benzene-trisethynylbenzoate) to form the supramolecular self-assembly structures 4 and 5;this being investigated in both the solid and the solution state. The resulting self-assemblies gave rise to metal centered emission (both in the solid and solution) upon excitation of 3, confirming its role as a sensitizing antenna. Drop-cased examples of ligand 3, and the solid forms of 4 and 5, formed from both organic and mixture of organic-aqueous solutions, were analyzed using Scanning Electron Microscopy, which showed significant changes in morphology;the ligand giving rise to one dimensional structures, while both 4 and 5 formed amorphous materials that were highly dense solid networks containing nanoporous features. The surface area (216 and 119 m2·g^-1 for 4 and 5 respectively) and the ability of these porous materials to capture and store gases such as N2 investigated at 77 K. The self-assembly formation was also investigated in diluted solution by monitoring the various photophysical properties of 3–5. This demonstrated that the most stable structures were that consisting of a single antennae 3 and three complexes of 1 or 2 (e.g., 4 and 5) in solution. By monitoring the excited state lifetimes of the Eu(III) and Tb(III) ions in h2O and D2O respectively, we showed that their hydration states (the q-value) changed from -2 to 0, upon formation of the assemblies, indicating that the three benzoates of 3 coordinated directly to the each of the three lanthanide centers. Finally we demonstrate that this hierarchically porous materials can be used for the sensing of organic solvents as the emission is highly depended on the solvent environment;the lanthanide emission being quenched in the presence of acetonitrile and ThF, but greatly enhanced in the presence of methanol.

Background:We aimed to identify predictive factors for positron emission tomography(PET)-detected hepatocellular carcinoma(hCC)metastasis and a cost-effective approach to preoperative PET-computed tomography(CT)for detecting ***:Clinicopathological and survival data of hCC patients having PET-CT with 18F-fludeoxyglucose(FDG)and 11C-acetate(ACT)following contrast-enhanced CT/magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)for preoperative tumor staging were *** logistic regression was performed to identify predictive factors for PET-detected metastasis.A cost-benefit analysis model was built for the incurred costs and the impact of PET-CT findings on treatment strategy was ***:Totally 152 patients were ***-tracer PET-CT detected metastasis in 17 patients(11%).By multivariate analysis,alpha-fetoprotein(AFP)≥400 ng/mL[relative risk(RR):4.30,95%confidence interval(CI):1.41-13.15,P=0.011]and bilobar disease(RR:3.94,95%CI:1.24-12.52,P=0.014)were independent predictive factors for PET-detected ***-CT findings altered the treatment strategy for 12 patients(7.9%);three partial hepatectomies,eight episodes of transarterial chemoembolization(TACE)and one episode of ablation were avoided,with an estimated cost-saving of US$91,000,$150,000 and$10,600 *** the PET-CT been performed only for patients with AFP≥400 ng/mL or bilobar disease(n=74),metastasis would have been confirmed in 14 patients(18.9%),and the cost-saving per patient was estimated at US$1,***:Dual-tracer PET-CT is cost-effective and useful for preoperative hCC staging in patients with AFP≥400 ng/mL or bilobar *** routine use in preoperative workup for all hCC patients is not *** disease with AFPhieve good negative predictive value for PET-detected *** patients with either factor can avoid unnecessary procedures and is thus cost-effective for preoperative hCC workup.

Silicon nitride(Si_(3)N_(4))based ceramics are one of the most attractive advanced engineering materials,which have been widely used under high-speed rotational operation or for mechanical contacts across a curved *** the present study,rotationally symmetric texturing of Si_(3)N_(4),with radial grain align-ment,was obtained by centripetal sinter-forging(CSF)of a partially sintered *** average values of the included angles between the c-axis of the local Si_(3)N_(4)grain and radial direction were approxi-mately 16.4°and 11.0°,on the section plane perpendicular to the pressing direction,and parallel to both the pressing and radial directions,*** compressive strain in the pressing direction forced the ceramic body to flow towards the central axis,resulting in compressive strain in the tangential di-rection and tensile strain in the radial direction.A fundamental physical model was created to simulate the grain rotation during the 3-dimentional strain reorientation,which revealed the rod-like grain would preferentially rotate toward the center of the sample under the CSF *** addition,due to the fric-tion between the sample surface and the pressing punch,the increased shear strain could enhance the Si_(3)N_(4)grain ***,ceramics with rod-like grains perpendicular to the curved side sur-face could be anticipated by applying the centripetal forming concept in a controlled manner.

Naphthenic acids are a complex class of thousands of naturally occurring aliphatic and alicyclic carboxylic acids found in oil sands bitumen and in the wastewater generated from bitumen processing. Dozens of analytical methods have been developed for the semiquantification of total naphthenic acids in water samples. however, different methods can give different results, prompting investigation into the comparability of the many methods. A review of important methodological features for analyzing total naphthenic acids is presented and informs the design of future standard methods for the semi- quantification of total naphthenic acids using mass spectrometry. The design considerations presented are a synthesis of discussions from an Environment and Climate Change Canada （ECCC） led taskforce of 10 laboratory experts from government, industry and academia during April 2016 and subsequent discussions between University of British Columbia and ECCC representatives. Matters considered are： extraction method, solvent, ph, and temperature; analysis instrumentation and resolution; choice of calibration standards; use of surrogate and internal standards; and use of online or offline separation prior to analysis. The design considerations are amenable to both time-of-flight and Orbitrap mass spectrometers.
