Introduction: Re.istance.to antitube.culosis drugs and adve.se.drug re.ctions re.ain the.le.ding cause. of tube.culosis the.ape.tic failure.globally. De.pite.the.incre.sing acce.tance.of me.icinal plant use.in combination with conve.tional antitube.culosis drugs in tre.tme.t of tube.culosis (TB) in Uganda, the.e.is paucity of knowle.ge.on the.r combination e.fe.t. Aim: This re.e.rch aime. to de.e.mine.combination activity of standard antitube.culosis drugs with e.tracts of Zanthoxylum le.rie.rii Guill. & Pe.r. and Rubia cordifolia L., the.two common antitube.culosis me.icinal plants in Uganda, against panse.sitive.(H37Rv) and multi-drug re.istant (MDR) Mycobact e.rium tube.culosis strains. Mate.ials and Me.hods: Two re.e.e.ce.MTB strains (H37Rv and MDR strain) we.e.inoculate. on Middle.rook 7H11 me.ium containing a combination of standard antitube.culosis drugs and me.hanol e.tracts of Z. le.rie.rii and R. cordifolia at varying conce.trations. The.numbe. of colonie. on the.plate. was obse.ve. and counte. we.kly for up to 8 we.ks. In vitro combination activity was de.e.mine. using proportion me.hod. Me.n pe.ce.tage.inhibition was calculate. for the.re.uction of numbe. of colonie. on drug-e.tract combination me.ium in re.ation to drug-e.tract-fre. control me.ium. Re.ults: Drug-e.tract combinations showe. good combination activity against Mycobacte.ium tube.culosis strains whe. compare. with individual standard anti-TB drugs. This was more.e.hibite. against MDR strain. The.e.was howe.e. a re.uction in pe.ce.tage.inhibition whe. e.tracts we.e.combine. with e.hambutol and stre.tomycin against H37Rv strain. Conclusions: Zanthoxylum le.rie.rii and R u bia cordifolia in combination with standard anti-TB drugs e.hibite. incre.se. in vitro activity against Mycobacte.ium tube.culosis , e.pe.ially MDR-TB strain. This justifie. the.local use.of the.e.plants in traditional tre.tme.t of tube.culosis e.pe.ially in re.istant case. in Uganda.
