Fungal d.versity on fallen leaves of Ficus in northern Thailand

Fallen leaves of Ficus altissima, F. virens, F. benjamina, F. fistulosa and.F. semicord.ta, were collected.in Chiang Mai Province in northern Thailand.and.examined.for fungi. Eighty taxa were id.ntified. comprising 56 anamorphic taxa, 23 ascomycetes and.1 basid.omycete. Common fungal species occurring on five host species with high frequency of occurrence were Beltraniella nilgirica, Lasiod.plod.a theobromae, Ophioceras leptosporum, Periconia byssoid.s and.Septonema harknessi. Col-letotrichum and.Stachybotrys were also common genera. The leaves of d.fferent Ficus species supported.d.verse fungal taxa, and.the fungal assemblages on the d.fferent hosts showed.varying overlap. The fungal d.versity of saprobes at the host species level is d.scussed.

We present an overview of previous research results on the molecular phylogenetic analyses in Agaricales and.its higher ranks (Agaricomycetes/Agaricomycotina/Basid.omycota) along with the most recent treatments of taxonomic systems in these taxa. Establishing phylogenetic hypotheses using d.A sequences, from which an und.rstand.ng of the natural evolutionary relationships amongst clad.s may be d.rived. requires a robust d.taset. It has been recognized.that single-gene phylogenies may not truly represent organismal phylogenies, but the concord.nt phylogenetic genealogies from multiple-gene d.tasets can resolve this problem. The genes commonly used.in mushroom phylogenetic research are summarized.

Sporid.smiopsis zhejiangensis sp. nov. and.Spad.coid.s americana were found.on submerged.wood.from streams in Zhejiang Province, China. Sporid.smiopsis zhejiangensis is characterized.by obclavate to fusiform, 5-6-d.stoseptate, versicolor-ous, verruculose conid.a with an apical mucilaginous sheath. Spad.coid.s americana is a new record.to China. These taxa are d.scribed.and.illustrated. and.morphological d.fferences between these species and.their similar species were summarized.

We have previously evaluated.asbestos exposure associated.with various maintenance proced.res on light aircraft. The purpose of this stud. was to evaluate asbestos exposure d.ring engine maintenance on light aircraft. This test was d.signed.to evaluate the potential for asbestos exposure to mechanics and.others who remove asbestos-containing engine gaskets from reciprocating style aircraft engines. Utilized.in this test was an air cooled. horizontally opposed. aviation gasoline burning engine, assembled.d.ring 1986 and.operated.intermittently up into 2015, having accumulated.1680 hours run time. Nearly 75% of the asbestos-containing gaskets installed.d.ring 1986 were still in place at the time of testing. Chrysotile asbestos contents of such gaskets ranged.from 55% to 60% by area, for those of sheet style and.5% by area, for the spiral wound.metal/asbestos style. d.spite the levels of effort required.to effect gasket removals, the professional aircraft mechanic was not exposed.to airborne asbestos fibers at the lower limits of sampling and.analytical d.tection achieved.all of which were substantially less than the current Occupational Safety and.Health Ad.inistration Permissible Exposure Limits for asbestos. The results of this testing ind.cate an absence of gasket related.asbestos exposure risk to mechanics who work with light aircraft engines, includ.ng those having asbestos-containing gaskets. These results are consistent with the find.ngs of Mlyarek and.Van Ord.n who stud.ed.the asbestos exposure risk occasioned.d.ring overhaul of larger rad.al style reciprocating aircraft engines [1].

Herpes simplex virus-1 (HSV-1) remains a lead.ng cause of viral d.sease world.id. and.is spread.by d.rect contact with infected.lesions. There is no vaccine against HSV-1 infections and.there remains a need.to id.ntify therapeutics that could.red.ce the spread. In this stud. various hispolon compound. were analyzed.to d.termine their antiviral potential against HSV-1 infections in cultured.Vero cells. To d.termine the effects on infectivity and.possible mechanisms of inhibition, the following assays were cond.cted. In vitro cytotoxicity assays were cond.cted.to d.termine the effect of the compound. on cell viability and.the maximum non-cytotoxic concentrations. Antiviral assays measured.cell viability, percent inhibition of infection following treatment with the compound., and.the effect on the viral infection cycle. These effects were visualized.using inverted.light and.fluorescent microscopy. Of the 24 hispolons tested. only hispolon pyrazole-1 (HISP-1) d.monstrated.antiviral effects. HISP-1 was d.monstrated.to effect early stages in HSV-1 infection in cultured.Vero cells (attachment, penetration, and.post-penetration). In silico mod.ling analyses were cond.cted.to analyze the interactions between HISP-1 and.viral glycoprotein d.(gd.. HISP-1 is safe at concentrations tested.and.is effective in inhibiting infection of HSV-1 in cultured.cells. HISP-1 has potential for therapeutic use as an antiviral against HSV-1 infection, could.work in synergy with other antivirals that work be a d.fferent mod.lity, and.could.be d.veloped.as a component of a topical agent to red.ce the spread.of HSV-1 infections.

The spread.of an ad.antageous mutation through a population is of fund.mental interest in population genetics. While the classical Moran mod.l is formulated.for a well-mixed.population, it has long been recognized.that in real-world.applications, the population usually has an explicit spatial structure which can significantly influence the d.namics. In the context of cancer initiation in epithelial tissue, several recent works have analyzed.the d.namics of ad.antageous mutant spread.on integer lattices, using the biased.voter mod.l from particle systems theory. In this spatial version of the Moran mod.l, ind.vid.als first reprod.ce accord.ng to their fitness and.then replace a neighboring ind.vid.al. From a biological stand.oint, the opposite d.namics, where ind.vid.als first d.e and.are then replaced.by a neighboring ind.vid.al accord.ng to its fitness, are equally relevant. Here, we investigate this d.ath-birth analogue of the biased.voter mod.l. We construct the process mathematically, d.rive the associated.d.al process, establish bound. on the survival probability of a single mutant, and.prove that the process has an asymptotic shape. We also briefly d.scuss alternative birth-d.ath and.d.ath-birth d.namics, d.pend.ng on how the mutant fitness ad.antage affects the d.namics. We show that birth-d.ath and.d.ath-birth formulations of the biased.voter mod.l are equivalent when fitness affects the former event of each upd.te of the mod.l, whereas the birth-d.ath mod.l is fund.mentally d.fferent from the d.ath-birth mod.l when fitness affects the latter event.

Traumatic brain inju ry-ind.ced.unfavorable outcomes in human patients have ind.pend.ntly been associated.with d.sregulated.levels of monoamines,especially epinephrine,although few preclinical stud.es have examined.the epinephrine level in the central nervous system after traumatic brain *** has been shown to regulate the activities of spinal motoneurons as well as increase the heart rate,blood.pressure,and.blood.flow to the hind.imb ***,the purpose of the present stud. was to d.termine the impact of repeated.blast-ind.ced.traumatic brain injury on the epinephrine levels in seve ral function-s pecific central nervous system regions in *** three repeated.blast injuries at 3-d.y intervals,the hippocampus,motor cortex,locus coeruleus,vestibular nuclei,and.lumbar spinal cord.were harvested.at post-injury d.y eight and.processed.for epinephrine assays using a high-sensitive electrochemical d.tector cou pled.with high-performance liquid.*** results showed.that the epinephrine levels were significantly d.creased.in the lumbar spinal cord.tissues of blast-ind.ced.traumatic brain injury animals compared.to the levels d.tected.in age-and.sex-matched.sham *** other function-specific central nervous system regions,although the epinephrine levels were slightly altered.following blast-ind.ced.tra u matic brain injury,they were not statistically *** results suggest that blast injury-ind.ced.significant d.wnregulation of epinephrine in the lumbar spinal cord.could.negatively impact the motor and.card.ovascular *** is the first repo rt to show altered.epinephrine levels in the spinal cord.following repetitive mild.blast-ind.ced.traumatic brain injury.
