Excitons,bound electron–hole pairs,in two-dimensional hybrid organic inorganic perovskites(2D HOIPs)are capable of forming hybrid light-matter states known as exciton-polaritons(E–Ps)when the excitonic medium is confined in an optical *** the case of 2D HOIPs,they can self-hybridize into E–Ps at specific thicknesses of the HOIP crystals that form a resonant optical cavity with the ***,the fundamental properties of these self-hybridized E–Ps in 2D HOIPs,including their role in ultrafast energy and/or charge transfer at interfaces,remain ***,we demonstrate that>0.5µm thick 2D HOIP crystals on Au substrates are capable of supporting multiple-orders of self-hybridized E–P *** E–Ps have high Q factors(>100)and modulate the optical dispersion for the crystal to enhance sub-gap absorption and *** varying excitation energy and ultrafast measurements,we also confirm energy transfer from higher energy E–Ps to lower energy E–***,we also demonstrate that E–Ps are capable of charge transport and transfer at *** findings provide new insights into charge and energy transfer in E–Ps opening new opportunities towards their manipulation for polaritonic devices.

A column study of the hydro-mechanical behavior of mature fine tailings under atmospheric drying

In this paper, the hydro-mechanical behavior and physical properties of mature fine tailings(MFT) under atmospheric drying are investigated through a column study. In the study, evaporation takes place in the development of suction in the upper parts of the column and increasing suction leads to higher strength in the tailings. After 5 days, the suction in the first lift is around 17 k pa in the upper part of the *** a second lift is added, the first lift initially loses strength but over a 30 days' period, the strength is recovered to its prior value and suction in the second lift reaches 500 k pa. The vane shear strength values show a substantial increase in the strength of the MFT after 30 days under atmospheric drying and drainage. The 90% strength found in the column exceeds the threshold(5 k pa). The hydraulic-mechanical properties of the deposited tailings are closely coupled due to several mechanisms, such as evaporation,drainage, self-consolidation, suction and crack development. The findings of this study will provide a better understanding of the placement behavior of multiple lifts of MFT and thus contribute to reclamation design standards and reduce the use of dedicated disposal areas.

Pulsed DC magnetron sputtering of transparent conductive oxide layers

A comprehensive material study of different transparent conductive oxides （TCOs） is presented. The layers are deposited by pulsed direct current （DC） magnetron sputtering in an inline sputtering system. Indium tin oxide （ITO） films are studied in detail. The optimum pressure of 0.33 pa （15Ar：202） produces a 300- nm thin film with a specific resistivity p of 2.2 × 10-6 Ωm and a visual transmittance of 81%. Alternatively, ZnO：A1 and ZnO：Ga layers with thicknesses of 200 and 250 nm are deposited with a minimum resistivity of 5.5× 10-6 and 6.8× 10-6Ωm, respectively. To compare the optical properties in the ultraviolet （UV） range, the optical spectra are modeled and the band gap is determined.

Elements of disturbance that affect epiphyte vitality in a temperate rainforest:an experimental approach

Aims Epiphytes are an abundant and diverse component of many wet temperate forests and have significant roles in ecosystem *** is known about the processes and rates of their death and decomposition when they fall from the canopy,which limits our understanding of their role in forest carbon sequestration and nutri-ent *** the temperate rainforest of the Quinault River Valley,Washington State,our aim was to test hypotheses regarding four elements of disturbance that might contribute to their *** We established set of experiments in which we placed samples of canopy epiphytes and their branch segments:(i)in the canopy versus forest floor microenvironment(stratum);(ii)attached to live versus dead branch substrates;(iii)subjected to physical disruption and‘jarring’;and(iv)in direct versus indirect con-tact with the forest *** the 2-year study,we assigned a non-destructive‘vitality index’(based on color and appar-ent mortality and dryness)to each sample every 2-3 months to compare effects of the experimental treatments and analyzed with a statistical model and post hoc pairwise compa.isons of *** Findings The canopy versus ground stratum and live/dead branch status sig-nificantly affected epiphyte *** of physical disruption and ground contact were not *** were seasonal effects(low vitality during the sampling times in the summer,revitalization upon sampling times in the winter)for all treatments except samples in contact with the *** implication of these results relates to effects of climate change,which is predicted to shift to hotter,drier summers and wetter *** change may affect forest dynamics and nutrient cycling in unpredictable *** also point to future experiments to understand biotic and abiotic effects on epiphyte disturbance and dynamics.

A New Method to Predict Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate with Natural Geographical Factors and Location by Case-based Reasoning: A Case Study of China

Reference values of erythrocyte sedimentation rate(ESR)are the key to interpret ESR blood test in *** common local reference ESR values are more accuracy in blood test that are established with natural geographical factors by using the multiple linear regression(MLR)model and the artificial neural network(ANN).These knowledge-based methods have limitations since the knowledge domains of ESR and natural geographical factors are *** paper presents a new cases-depended model to establish reference ESR values with natural geographical factors and location using case-based reasoning(CBR)since knowledge domain of ESR and geographical factors is *** 224 local normal ESR values of China that calculated from 13623 samples were obtained,and the corresponding natural geographical factors and location that include altitude,sunshine hours,relative humidity,temperature,precipitation,annual temperature range and annual average wind speed were obtained from the National Geomatics Center of *** was used to predict the unseen local reference ESR values with *** average absolute deviation(AAD),mean square error(MSE),prediction accuracy(pa),and Pearson correlation coefficient(r)between the observed and estimated data of proposed model is 33.07%,9.02,66.93% and 0.78,which are better than those of ANN and MLR *** results show that the proposed model provides higher prediction accuracy than those of the artificial neural network and multiple linear regression *** predicted values are very close to the observed *** results show significant agreement of cases ***,the model is used to predict the unseen local reference ESR with natural geographical factors and *** spatial,the highest ESR reference areas are distributed in the southern-western district of China that includes Sichuan,Chongqing,Guangxi and Guizhou provinces,and the reference ESR values are greater than 23 mm/60 *** higher ESR reference values a

Inducible T-cell costimulator(ICOS),a homodimeric protein expressed on the surface of activated T-cells,is being investigated as a potential therapeutic target to treat various *** studies have reported aberrant increases in the soluble form of ICOS(sICOS)in human serum in disease-state patients,primarily using commercial ELISA ***,results from our in-house immunoassay did not show these aberrant increases,leading us to speculate that commercial sICOS ELISAs may be prone to *** directly tested that hypothesis and found that one widely used commercial kit yields falsepositives and is prone to human anti-mouse antibody *** then analyzed a panel of healthy,cancer,chronic hepatitis C virus,systemic lupus erythematosus,and diffuse cutaneous systemic sclerosis human serum using our in-house immunoassay and reported the measured sICOS concentrations in these *** even well characterized immunoassay methods are prone to non-specific interference,we also developed a novel sICOS LC-MS/MS method to confirm the *** these orthogonal approaches,we show that sICOS is a low abundance soluble protein that cannot be measured above approximately 20 pg/mL in human serum.

Analysis of an Ensemble of High-Resolution WRF Simulations for the Rapid Intensification of Super Typhoon Rammasun(2014)

Diagnostics are presented from an ensemble of high-resolution forecasts that differed markedly in their predictions of the rapid intensification(RI)of Typhoon *** show that the basic difference stems from subtle differences in initializations of(a)500-850-h pa environmental winds,and(b)midlevel moisture and *** then describe how these differences impact on the evolving convective organization,storm structure,and the timing of *** expected,ascent,diabatic heating and the secondary circulation near the inner-core are much stronger in the member that best forecasts the *** evolution of vortex cloudiness from this member is similar to the actual imagery,with the development of an inner cloud band wrapping inwards to form the *** present evidence that this structure,and hence the enhanced diabatic heating,is related to the tilt and associated dynamics of the developing inner-core in *** the most accurate ensemble member:(a)inhibition of ascent and a reduction in convection over the up-shear sector allow moistening of the boundary-layer air,which is transported to the down-shear sector to feed a developing convective asymmetry;(b)with minimal ventilation,undiluted clouds and moisture from the down-shear left quadrant are then wrapped inwards to the up-shear left quadrant to form the eyewall cloud;and(c)this process seems related to a critical down-shear tilt of the vortex from midlevels,and the vertical phase-locking of the circulation over up-shear *** the member that forecasts a much-delayed RI,these processes are inhibited by stronger vertical wind shear,initially resulting in poor vertical coherence of the circulation,lesser moisture and larger *** analysis suggests that ensemble prediction is needed to account for the sensitivity of forecasts to a relatively narrow range of environmental wind shear,moisture and vortex inner-structure.

Diagnostic utility of flexible fiberoptic nasopharyngolaryngoscopy recorded onto a smartphone: A pilot study

Objectives: To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of flexible fiberoptic examinations of the larynx recorded onto smartphones. Methods: Prospective, blinded study of inpatients requiring laryngoscopy. A live exam was per-formed, then a smartphone was attached to the endoscope using a novel coupling device and the same examination was recorded. The live and recorded exams were evaluated by two lar-yngologists, each blinded to the findings of the other. Results: Eighteen subjects were evaluated. Evaluation of airway patency was identical (Kappa = 1.0 [1, 1]). Evaluation of vocal cord motion was identical for 14 subjects: 9 normal, 3 paretic, 2 paralytic (Kappa = 0.69 [0.38, 1]). Conclusion: There is high correlation between laryngeal diagnoses using live flexible fiberoptic laryngoscopy and recordings using a coupling device to transfer the recordings on to smart-phones. Critical findings such as airway patency and vocal fold motion showed the highest cor-relation.
